FILM DESCRIPTION:
Steven Spielberg followed Jaws (1975), his first major box-office success, with this epic science fiction adventure about a disparate group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) is an electrical lineman who, while sent out on emergency repairs, witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a "sunburn" from its bright lights to prove it. Neary's wife and children are at first skeptical, then concerned, and eventually fearful, as Roy refuses to accept a "logical" explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his job, his home, and his family to pursue the "truth" about UFOs. Neary's obsession eventually puts him in contact with others who've had close encounters with alien spacecraft, including Jillian (Melinda Dillon), a single mother whose son disappeared during her UFO experience, and Claude Lacombe (celebrated French filmmaker François Truffaut), a French researcher who believes that we can use a musical language to communicate with alien visitors. Lacombe's theory is put to the test when a band of government researchers and underground UFO enthusiasts (including Neary) join for an exchange with alien visitors near Devil's Tower, Wyoming. In 1980, a "Special Edition" was released. While its primary selling point was the addition of scenes inside the alien spaceship, Spielberg claimed that he also cleaned up some choppy editing in the second act.

A brief, single intimate moment when two races of beings separated by light years and eons share a simple, gesture-led acknowledgement of eachother. That’s all you get. That’s all anyone could ask for.
This is one of the most important films of our time, an ideal of vision what could happen. Someday..not sure when...humanity will discover other beings in this universe.

I like how the alien is animatronic, not CGI, even though it's made of gears and padding, it makes it seem more real.
greg The fact that it's a puppet and it's not CGI means of course that it physically exists right there on the set. Animatronics and puppetry gives the film a physical heft which CGI just doesn't achieve.
greg Did you know that they had originally intended to use a CGI for the alien in this scene? It didn't look good (it wouldn't be until Tron was released that CGI would really hit off) so they opted with an animatronic.
I thought maybe the alien was animated using stop motion. I didn't realise it was an animatronic puppet.
Yes which is something I respect and love in movies back in the day that we don't get nowadays most of time it's CGI and visual effects.

I know. I just watched it and I just had to watch it agin. It shows humanity's kindness and peacefulness. I also kinda feel bad for Roy because everyone saw him as a crazy person and his wife left him and it brought tears to my eyes when Barry was reunited with his mother.
When Barry said bye I just couldn't get that scene out of my head. It also makes me sad that most of these actors are elderly or dead.

With all the CGI and all the alien movies made since then, this to me is still the best. This alien looks real, has emotion. And the effects totally hold up.

I love this movie but the 1080p and 4k versions ruin the mistique of the movie. We were never meant to view this in ultra high def. You can easily notice how fake the aliens are and the alien that's doing the alien sign language has a noticable ripple in the arm(costume malfunction?).

I think especially in the scenes with low light or the parts where the aliens are just a silouette with bright lights behind them, these special effects work even better than modern cgi. When the little aliens come out of the spaceship and select Roy, this scene seems very real... even though almost 50 year old effects. It may have been better if this movie never showed the aliens in clear lighting. Should have been left obscured. The only scene that doesn't hold up is the alien who does the hand signs. Too rubbery looking

You know why this is the greatest alien movie of all time. These aliens are peaceful and intelligent. In every other space movie the aliens are warring and barbaric. We need new movies with this theme.
What a lot of people don't remember is that this was the VERY FIRST movie to present aliens as peaceful. At the time this was a HUGE statement.

@@roquefortfiles I love this part of the film and this scene in particular, no matter the difference or space that seperates us, two intelligent species from across the void come together in peace and curiosity, I love that after the hand signals, the alien and the humans are staring at each other in awe and silence, fascinated and mezmerised by each other and that each other simply are there. That was what Speilberg was trying to say and he added that theme to the later E.T and Taken (2002). The superb and inspiring Contact (1997) also shared this idea

Those aliens were such trolls, turning lights on and off, messing with children's toys, turning off car engines. Not to mention ruining families and abducting sailors and children
Did you not understand the movie? They didn't abduct those people. They were various people who were lost throughout history who the aliens saw and, um, gave them a ride.

Seeing this in 70 mm in a huge theater in 1977 was quite an experience. This scene was incredibly moving. Quite a moment

@@marissab6461 It is a wonderful film. Magical. The UFO's are so original when they come roaring around the bend. On a big screen? Shivers!!. You see them but you don't really see them which makes them very intriguing. I hope you're not seeing the "Special Edition" Not a fan of it. The interior of the ship should forever remain a mystery. The end scene where "Puck" comes out bids farewell with John Williams music soaring. Its emotional. One of my all time fav films. Hope you enjoy.

The Alien looking just as amazed as us about finding other intelligent life is a wonderful little addition.
Giving a nod to just how rare and precious intelligent life is.
The implication that a species millions of years ahead of us, *still* hasn’t encountered other intelligent life until finding us is really quite profound.
And I love that they look just as happy and curious about us, as we are about them.

Something really cool about the mothership is the lighting on the dome. Steven Spielberg said in an interview that the lights on the dome were from pictures he took of the San Fernando Valley at night when the city lights were on. I always thought that was really cool.

This scene really sums up the beauty of the whole film: We are not alone in this vast universe. This film establishes that wonderful sense of first contact between our human race and visitors from outer space. It's understandable how there needed to be top secret handling and control of the situation. These are trained military men and scientists. Such a first meeting would call for such measures. Imagine a scenario, to a general population of common citizens. 1) the aliens come in peace and friendship, but there's some crazy nutcase in the crowd who thinks they're a threat and attacks them, which results in starting a war with otherworldly forces. 2) the aliens are indeed hostile and will attack on sight, hence the military would be able to more potentially handle such a crisis with the proper defence. All in all, it's impertinent that a controlled situation be called for in matters of first contact with alien life. Fortunately, here we can understand appreciate the beauty that Spielberg portrays, after all that's happened: mysterious lights, child abductions (even though the little boy Barry went of his own free will and choice), and other paranormal activity that we don't have answers for, and that fear of the unknown which can make us go crazy or paranoid, but in the end, we discover that these aliens are a peaceful people, and they have reached an understanding with us. It would make sense for them to reach out to scientists and other such people who are open-minded. It makes sense that they do not share anything of technological advancement, until we, as a people, have overcome our own primitive instincts which include violence and warring on each other. But until that time comes, the aliens here have made themselves known to the scientists, and Lacombe leads them with a charismatic smile in his exchange with the little alien, who smiles back. We are not alone...
This moment is pure cinema magic. Between John Williams' score, Truffaut's enthusiasm,Douglas Trumbull's FX and Spielberg's direction this scene comes together masterfully.
Let us not forget Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound.

I'm 100% certain "Close Encounters" and "E.T." take place in the same continuity universe. Both films have the same director, the same composer, and the same creature designer. "Puck" must be one of E.T.'s intergalactic cousins.

In "The Phantom Menace", it has a scene that 3 aliens of Et's race appears.
So, maybe Et takes place in the same universe as Star Wars

Indeed. In the novelization, the Mothership is supposed to be over two miles in circumference. Although you can tell the movie version is slightly smaller. Probably around 500 meters at its widest point.
Its design is based on a stell plant in India which Spielberg laid eyes on while shooting the "India scene" of this same movie. Owned by Tata Steel, Indian conglomerate. The dome below is basically the lighting of the whole San Fernando valley of which Spielberg took multiple shots.

The most emotional scene in a movie I've ever witnessed. Along with the musical score and the alien's smile, the way it looks at the earth people before stepping back on board. But I found myself wondering what happened to all the other people who exited the mothership. Its a shame there couldn't be a sequel featuring Roy Neary's return to Earth. However, there would have to be a different actor playing him as he wouldn't have aged.....

Fun fact: A young Lance Henrikson (Bishop from Aliens) can be seen at 0:58 in one of his very first roles. Didn’t really have any lines just was a security guy for the French scientist.
Always makes me well-up. SO emotional.

John Williams is absolutely ON FIRE in this scene. The score in this scene is nothing short of amazing. He captures a profoundly deep emotional feeling. It feels like something immensely important in human history. But wondrous and very moving.

this alien looks innocent but earlier in the film they terrified berrys mom to Death by trying to kidnap her kid..don't be fooled by these little guys..
I used to see the friendly turn of the aliens in the film as a dramaturgical incoherence, a cop-out by nothing justified. Now I give credit to Spielberg for retaining that extremely problematic ambiguity at the center of the ufo lore, which his film is a rather remarkable summation of.

I only first saw this movie today, and it was on one of those sketchy websites where you can watch it free. The most compelling scene for me was the wide shot from the alien's POV. It made me tear up and sat with me so much that I decided I needed to see the clip again. The simplicity in it is beautiful and endlessly charming. And sweet.

this may just be me and my fear of aliens, but when i first watched this movie i refused to look at the screen because of how scared i was. i still am so i scrolled through the comments trying not to see it haha
The score was composed, conducted and produced by John Williams, who had previously won an Academy Award for his work on Spielberg's Jaws. Much like his two-note Jaws theme, the "five-tone" motif for Close Encounters has since become ingrained in popular culture (the five tones are used by scientists to communicate with the visiting spaceship as a mathematical language as well as being incorporated into the film's signature theme). The score was recorded at Warner Bros. Scoring studios in Burbank, California

Clutch Cargo Alien movies today don't take on the realistic and emotional reaction to actually experience and witness the spectacle of aliens landing on Earth. Instead we only see a horror, war, or action film. That's what makes this film so special. It shows you another side to the idea of extraterrestrials making contact with Earth. It's a beautiful science-fiction film and one of the greats overall. I love a good alien invasion film, but nothing has emotionally impacted me on the level as this did to me as a kid.
You know what? I'm a complete moron for not mentioning one of my all time favorite modern day science-fiction films regarding aliens making contact on Earth, District 9. Such a gem of a film that easily gets overlooked despite its positive reception.
Saleem Frazer That movie did get a lot of good reviews and even got nominated for best picture, but I was one of the few people who didn't like it. I thought it tried too hard to shove its message down the viewers throat. I just couldn't get into it, though it was much better than its follow-up "Chappie". Now that was awful.
Clutch Cargo I decided not to see Chappie after the trailers. What did you think about Elysium? That's the real follow up so to speak to District 9.

I'm 25, and this is my all time favourite movie. I love many movies from different genres, different eras. But this film is my N0.1 always will be. And since being a young kid, I've always wanted to experience this movie in the cinema. I finally got my wish when it was the film's 40th anniversary. It was great seeing parents taking their kids to see this in cinema as well and enjoying the film. A day I'll never forget.

Its possibly a dip into the uncanny valley. He's mimicking human expressions, but not entirally as a human. Smiling is a human expression, and with some animals. Any other life forms smiling is baring the teeth, and a threat.
We make Aliens violent in most movies because we naturally envision them to be like us. And human ego can't imagine anything to be better than them.

I don't know what it is but Steven Spielberg has the ability to tap into our emotions whether it's through the genius of writing, producer or directing...he has the ability to make fans cry and this could be tears of joy, tears of pain...he is a genius filmmaker and he pulls fans in emotionally and he can really tug on the heartstrings...I don't know if anyone relates to this but he's done this with his movies with me...Close Encounters, E.T., The Color Purple, even Empire of the Sun, Schindler's List, Amistad and list goes on and on!

I still love this movie. From the first time I watched it on ONTV back in the early 80’s before cable. Still a good Sci-fi movie.

I loved the music at the end. There so many questions. What did Barry grow up to be? What did Barry and his mom do after this? What happened to Roy?
Well, in real life, child actor Cary Guffey (Barry) is now a California stockbroker, married with two kids. Apparently people still recognise him from Close Encounters! Bless.

I hate how nowadays,when directors make alien movies,its always about alien invasions or aliens killing or abducting humans,i hate how they portray aliens as evil beings who have no feelings and like to kill,this and E.T are the only alien movies where you see that aliens can have feelings and be peaceful and have curiosity.Because the way the alien looks at them in curiosity and wonder,you can also see that he smiles a little bit,this movie is a masterpiece.
Edit:yes,they did ruined people's lives,they did kill and abduct,but im talking about the fact that they atleast didn't come with extreme aggression and just wanting to kill everybody and take over our world,you can see that even if they abducted/killed people,in this scene you can tell that they have curiosity and dont lack emotions
You doo ok realize they abducted humans in this movie too right? At least 30 years worth for most of them. Family members dead. Lives ruined. The lucky one was the kid who was kidnapped and torn out of his mother’s arms through a doggy door. I’m not sure what kind of movie did you watch?
