From the lines RM says to the paintings and feast, everything in the video pretty much means something. It got me into kpop and I was surprised learning everything about it.

    What struck me was how few of the songs he knew. Also, the selection was quite hit or miss and he rarely if ever got the context. Nothing “Ultimate” here. For example, while he got GG’s Into the New World, for example, he didn’t understand its significance. He got Exid’s Up and Down, but not the famous Hari fan-cam that launched the fan-cam craze (and saved, more than saved, Exid’s career). There are certainly fans who like, say, Twice or Itzy better than BP, but he really should have emphasized BP’s overwhelming recent dominance as a group and as soloists, matched only by BTS. He missed or underplayed top soloists, such as IU or Sunmi, who, by the way, write many of their own songs. Quite a few of the songs were from early in the groups’ careers, which didn’t let them shine or show their progress. I agree with the comments that KPop is a broad tent, it’s like calling all U.S. popular music USPop. All in all, a mediocre and not very informative piece of work, and that’s leaving aside my mild distaste for the occasionally snarky tone.

Baek Ji Young was cool coz she was doing a lotta fusions especially with salsa. Lee Jung Hyun had a lot of techno ish music and was trying to do a think where she put the mic (when not lipsyncing) on her pinky and danced like that. Then I'm a fan of rock and technoish stuff so I loved a lot of stuff that Moon Hee Jun did. I've been away for a long time and when I was trying to make a demo my producer got me into Brown Eyed Girls. Actually, it is the opposite. K-pop is traditionally defined as a genre that is a collection of genres, which is absurd. Now, it is more appropriately defined as the industry or the idol culture itself because every K-pop song is still can be classified as actual genres hip-hop, r&b, electro, dance, rock, etc. K-pop is basically the pop of Korea.

    I am into Kpop since last year(2021) and have done a lot of research on Kpop. And I think that 2nd generation of Kpop was fun, because there was far less toxicity in fandoms compared to now... Then if other idols danced to other group's songs then they would not ship them or spread rumours. But now, just smiling when some idols are performing is enough for toxic fans or haters to ship them or create stupid rumours...
    Who else agree with this thought?

  • @AuroraIvashkov
    @AuroraIvashkov Před 3 lety +618

    K-pop is a mix of genres, there's no just one thing that makes something kpop. You've probably only heard BTS and Blackpink songs, that's why you only associate their style with K-pop. When in reality K-pop is much more diverse in terms of style and genres. Even BTS and Blackpink have diverse genre in their discography, well more BTS than Blackpink. But yeah, it's just that most non K-pop fans only heard a few songs by a few artists and associates it with the whole of K-pop. And usually those few songs are more catered to the western taste and that's why they get big mostly. But if you just take a chance to get to know K-pop outside the current surface, not just what commercially reaches you, it's much more diverse and fun.

    • @CZTachyonsVN
      @CZTachyonsVN Před 3 lety +29

      Dunno what the exact definition of Kpop is but to me it's not just "pop but Korean" or "music made in Korea". Kpop is very different than western pop so it rightfully deserves to be in its own genre. The other styles are just that, other styles just in Korean. Like RnB, Hip Hop, Jazz, etc... Although more recently, any Korean music has some Kpop "flavors" in it. That's not to say that it has Kpop elements in it but it also is a "fusion" or "hybrid", if you will, of different styles of musical composition.
      An average Kpop song is built much more differently from a western pop song. While most western pop songs have simple and catchy melody layered on top of very simple and predictable chord progressions (mostly 3 or 2 chords), Kpop still has mostly simple melody while having a much more complex and interesting musical composition that take inspiration from classical, jazz, gospel, RnB, soul, funk, techno, etc... 'I Got A Boy' by SNSD has about 5 different genres build within. Now sprinkle some modulations, key changes, suspensions, modal mixtures, uncommon scales and modes, time signatures... and you got a Kpop song! That's why I came to like Kpop especially bands like Day6. Mainstream Kpop is fine by me but a lot of times it becomes too repetitive or too disorganised, but that's just my taste.

      I just wish he wouldn't generalize it so much. Kpop isn't just the "Korean version of American pop music" its more accurately defined as "Korean music that is popular in Korea, regardless of genre." Not all music that comes out of America is the same genre, same goes for Korea. We just HAPPEN to call it Kpop instead of something like "KMusic" even if that would be more accurate.

I had my phone on shuffle plugged into my car just yesterday and Gangnam Style came on (I have the oddest range of genres and also would never plug my phone into any open DJ at a party as it could be worse when I have Gangnam Style, then Negro y Azul from the introduction of a breaking bad episode of which I know all words to in Spanish as well as now a few Narco style songs which is niche, then on comes Locuste Iste 4 part Latin voca harmony from before the 20th century next, yes all words are also known due to it being an academic study piece for me but I love it) but the Gangnam shuffle hit me and I was not mad in the slightest. I was just as much my 19 college self loving this bop ten years on, then followed Georgia by Ray Charles and as much as I love, it did bring down my hyper bopping driving to Gangnam at full blast. It’s an unironically bop and I hate it because I cannot explain why it hits so hard but it’s also so so bad! It’s just a sweet spot for me too!

IMO, they're a genre of their own and differ from the regular K-pop flavour the general public is used to. I'd be excited to see you do a video about these rock bands.

    I am 36% Kpop...
    I am quite proud of this score... I knew all the groups and soloists shown in the video...
    1st generation of Kpop is something entirely different and unique from current generation. So, we can't expect kpop to be same as now from before. Kpop then IS the Kpop as Kpop... We can't compare the songs of 1st generation Kpop to present generation.
    We can't expect; H.O.T, S.E.S, TVXQ, BigBang, Wonder girls, SNSD(Girl's generation), Shinwa, Super Junior, Supernova, SHINee, F(X), 2PM, Infinite, Girl's day and other 1st and 2nd gen groups to have the same music concept and style as BTS, Exo, Blackpink, Twice, Red velvet, Got7, MonstaX, Seventeen, NCT, Mamamoo, Nu'est, Winner, Ikon, IZ'ONE, Oh My Girl, TXT, Enhypen, Ateez, Itzy, Aespa, Everglow, StrayKids, (G)I-dle, Astro, Treasure, NMIXX, Cravity, Loona and other 3rd and 4th gen groups. All the generations are awesome, unique, deserving and K-pop just like they are...

    also note on 6:25 - it might sound "meh" to us because, but from my understanding she was well-known/respected during that era of KPop is because of her exceptional powerful vocals/singing style which was not as common in KPop at that time. In the West (?) we were already blessed by pop singers with this style (i.e. Beyonce) so it's not so new to us.

    I love how 7th Sense stood out. Overall still one of the songs that people are scared to cover or be selected as a trainee to perform it or even auditioning with such a song would be considered crazy.
    Yes I am a NCTzen(czennie) but have always appreciated SM artists as SME have their specific sound but at the same time try new things. Look at all of the NCT debuts. NCT U was made to stand out while NCT 127 and DREAM both have their flavor with Firetruck and Chewing Gum. NCT DREAM members at the time were around 15 when they debuted to explain the sound. Til now they have a rather youthful sound. While NCT U has ig the most mainstream sound. And NCT 127 have the classic NEO sound.(basically experimental sounds) As well found in other units.We as well have WAYV focused on the chinese market and now newly added the NCT JAPAN unit.
    That is NCT for you. Divided into foxed units and united by NCT U.
