Genuinely, I don't want to hear from Light (or Cosmos on Light's behalf) about Japan again until we see flights booked and tournaments registered for. And when that happens I need him to know that I will not be praying for his downfall out of malice or ill will, but simply because it would be the funniest shit I can imagine at this point.

Sparg0 is far too aggressive with Cloud. American playstyles are by far too aggressive, with the best exception being Tweek. Depending on overwhelming your opponent with options only works against Japanese players if you are aggressive like Kola, who has the best aggression game in Ultimate.

True, but NA’s mid level talent is far worse than that of Japan, so it will help, but it will still be a less affective measure of practice. Not to mention, the U.S is one big country, while Japan is a small island, so not only will it be a problem getting top players off all 50 states to play the ladder, but there will also be connection issues.

Sonix's insight on Sparg0 was exactly how I felt about him. It does feel like when he priorities winning and being #1 over being the best player he can be, he falters. Also, even when Sparg0 beat Tweek at Mainstage 2022, it felt like Cloud had so much trouble closing out stocks while also being gimpable. Japan as a region also feels like a giant match up exam which basically caught Sparg0 off guard the whole Golden week and his mentality on win or lose was hurting him more than helping him. When ZeRo was #1 in Smash 4, he used his resources to scout out players for match up experience just so that he was always prepared for any character he might go up against in bracket. With Sparg0, it just feels like he focuses more on improving his base game plan and he can be stubborn to a fault about it and then try to apply that to every match up he plays. I'm curious as to whether or not Sparg0 needs to improve his general gameplan and/or take some time to learn how to adapt to new match ups. Game knowledge even for the best players is sometimes more important than the perceived skill level and it shouldn't always be about performing your best in every single difficult situation you come across.

    • @HenryZhoupokemon
      @HenryZhoupokemon Před 25 dny +10

I know the coach Ramses has mentioned this, JP players have way better gameplans and implement them far better than NA players
He’s mentioned how top NA players come to him for help asking “how do I punish this players habit?” rather than asking “player X uses Y to beat me here, how does Y beat me, and what can I do to counter it?”

@@HenryZhoupokemon NA mentality in general for sure focuses on player match ups more than character match ups and other general game plans. Hell Melee in NA has that in spades. Light's recent record on Sparg0 does reflect this. As for Melee, I'd say Mang0 is the best example of player match up over character whereas Cody is the example of solid game plans working on any match up he plays.

Everyone said their piece and changed up the dynamic of the cast a bit. It wasn't a big debate with a bunch of guys where someone's voice is inevitably left out. It was sequential Cosmos/EE interviews with some big names in the scene. I don't necessarily think it's maintainable or always justified, but I would like to say it was executed well and I thought it was unique. Good job, guys!

The last NA tournament that JP didn't do well in was heavily affected by friendly fire, with JP players knocking each other out left and right. We got lucky when we invaded JP, but even without friendly fire, we still couldn't top 8. We need to accept that they're currently better than we are, so we can get as fired up as Cosmos.
Now that everybody here is finally on the same page, and can see that JP is better than NA, it's time to grind like crazy and give them a taste of their own medicine. We send SHADIC, Sonix, Sparg0, Light, Kola, Raflow, ShinyMark, Riddles, and everybody else who can be pursuaded to go. We aim for a stronger showing than Golden Week 2023, with the goal being to win every tournament around the holiday.
Also, why the Maister disrespect? He made it further in bracket because he's even-keeled and reliable. His peaks aren't the highest, but he delivers when it counts.

Some players give way too much of a shit about rankings and point values. There is very little difference between an event that is close to being enough points for a major and an event that is barely a major, there's not much that happens as a result. Light's Lvl Up Expo win is still better than say, Gluto's UltCore, because even though the latter is a major, Light acquired several very good wins that will help him far more in the rankings than Gluto did. The players that you beat and the players that you lose to are still the most important part.

In terms of what is holding back US players, I believe it’s comfort. they are so comfortable fighting against top tier characters played by top tier players that they’re not ready for, arguably in Japan, high/top tier players, playing mid or high or low tier characters, they’re not familiar with those matchups, but the players from Japan know everything about the top tiers from the US because Japan has some of the same characters in their meta over there. In tandem with what light said the US players, or even just NA players need to be going to more locals, or at least playing against people who use different characters more often, so that they can familiarize themselves with those types of characters, in the grand scheme of who they’ll be fighting internationally.

I think what NA needs to do is to acknowledge Japan is better, when Miya and Acola first got their success, people said "That doesn't mean anything, they can win in Japan only, they will get destroyed in NA". And guess what? Japanese tournaments are not easy to win at all, it's even harder than NA tournaments, you can tell that by looking at Protobanham in 2022, he beat almost all NA top players, and yet he couldn't win consistently in Japan, Acola, and Miya are skillful, yet people said they are carried, the whole steve ban thing is a joke to show many people in NA doesn't want to deal with something they are not good at. What a true American should do is acknowledge someone is better than us and improve. Then you can talk your shit, not by being a crybaby and complaining. Sparg0 did not underperform, he did great, it's just the Japanese scene is too competitive to be consistent.

The issue isnt that NA cant beat the Japanese players ... Sparg0 would still be favored vs Miya and Acola for example.
The issue is that in Japan ... newrly 95% of all their top players show up to their P tiers while in USa .. how often do we have a tournament where 95% of NA or even USAs best all in the same tournament ... almost never.
Even "teammates" Leo and Tweek are rarely at the same tournament.
In Japan ... even pools has players that can match u skill for skill or gimmick you. Threats all tournament long. Not just top 32.

The reason why I think Ego plays a huge part in this because we still have players like Tweek, who are the image and at the forefront of smash as an NA community losing at an online tourney and saying stuff like "well, its online, it doesn't count"
And I get that online and offline is a lot different, but most of the japanese players who are wrecking havoc in the smash WORLD right now are wifi warriors or at least started as such, Miya often talks about Smashmate for example, and while I know wifi isnt as good outside japan because how good their internet is and how compact the country is compared to NA for example, you still cannot simply say shit like "oh well, its not the way I prefer to play it so it doesn't count" thats bs.
I'm a nobody, I dont compete at that level but even I who hates wifi matches as much as most NA and doesnt play a Wifi friendly character, try my god damn best online and get shit on often, but I always see improvement when I try shit for a week and go to a local afterwards.
Practice is practice, game is game and, knocking down those who grind like crazy online is why offline only players are falling behind.

Honestly the Japan solidarity is probely the reason that Japan losses to acola because acola is that type of player when he knows you and your habits you just explode similar to fighting light so the friendship between those Japanese players is a strength and weakness. The strength side is that it helps those people build friendships and gives them a fair chance to defeat Miya and acola the problem is they are so good to Japan except for maybe hurt that they will use their knowledge to destroy those players before they destroy them. The hallmark of a top player is that you just win even when people know how to fight you. The human component is a big reason why acola and Miya are determined to be at the top of the Japan mountain.

Honestly for this whole NA vs Japan thing, a big factor is the lack of NA Majors/Supermajors due to various factors. Like post the whole Panda/Allan thing, NA lost Pound(one of the biggest events along with SSC and Genesis), Mainstage, Shine, Glitch, etc. Hurt the finnaces, drive, and pratice for NA.
Really not sure if ego/lack of passion/or negativty surronding the game explains NA vs Japan. Back in Smash 4, Zero was pretty public about his distaste for the game and preferred Brawl, still the best player of it. Also goes without saying, the best players of any sport or competition also likely have egos lol.

Japan humility is an act for example did you see Miya twirl his controller like he was gonna sweep hurt or when acola pops off when he gets a cheap kill. oh please that humility act is not fooling me as a true competitor even though I’m not on their level there is stages to pride it starts with them challenging you to friendlies destroying you than they get pushed to the brink and win at the absolute last moment and than they pop off or they style on someone before they face them like Miya. Humility is a way to mask their confidence so they can beat you easier and hide the fact they are sandbagging you. It’s easy to be humble when you kick someone’s butt but when you’re on the opposite side you start to feel yourself when you win one game which is why reverse 3-0s happen.
