Rafa Ortiz, the kayaker known for seeking the gnarliest whitewater, visits Washington D.C. to paddle Great Falls, Class V rapids only 14 miles upstream from the U.S. Capital. Upon his arrival, he is greeted by two local legends, Jason Beakes who has won the Great Falls Race six times and Tom McEwan, one of the first to paddle this section of the Potomac River in 1975. The trio come together to highlight the beauty of one the only kayaking meccas near a large metropolitan area and encourage others to do the same.

Tom McEwan is a beast on the river! He has been all over the world in a kayak and been instrumental in getting countless people in kayaks!! Way to go Tom!
My dream is to kayak the great falls, and I'm blessed it's only a few hours away from me. Another hidden gem is in Richmond, VA Red Bull. Hollywood rapid is one of the few class IV+ rapids that run through a major city.
Hope you’re able to achieve that 🙌🏼
I live 14 minutes from this beautiful place. Its jaw dropping every time.
Nice job on highlighting the environmental aspects and slow improvements in the Potomac!
Is there uncut footage of the gropros?
I love to free climb the surrounding boulders
There’s a LOT of great bouldering in the surrounding parkland, too. Very active community
yes,i would love too....
Yeah! ✌
@@redbull Jokes on you, Red Bull. I live right by there, and have paddled it multiple times.
I'm a wannabe "kayaker" who's only gone paddling a few times 😜.... but I love this sport & wish I had more time to try it more. And hell yeah, I would paddle the great falls in DC!!! 😁👍🤘🤙✌️
Yeah kayaking is a really cool activity.
See you there then next time! 😜
Be careful. Great falls is very dangerous and shouldn't be ran by an inexperienced kayaker. It's claimed many lives..
This is like 5 miles away from where I live😎
Do it!
I lived in Fairfax for a few years. This was my favorite place to go!
iewind well the footage is graded
Nice place you live in 😃✌
Red Bull yup!
🚣♀️🏄
Woah Red Bull, I live like 30 minutes from there. A heads would be nice, I would've sprinted down there with the broken foot I have just to watch.
hunter terrell so would have a few thousand other people and it would have ruined the video...
People run it all the time
I've been there with family from Wood Bridge, VA and Arlington, VA.
Literally i paddle here everyday
I did this in a canoe once. Tandem Old Town. On a float with my grandmother we took a wrong turn. We stayed pretty dry. I was able to eat my PB&J.
Dane Jackson would!!
I was digging that red bull helmet. Then realized this IS RED BULL.
Going kayaking this weekend. 💪
Nice! Have fun! 👌😁
Alot of people kayak in the calmest waters looks really boring. You have way more fun when you get a adrenaline rush.
where my marylanders at?
Travis Victorio yewwww
right here shorty!!!! East Baltimore
S Lawson got em
Nope, Great Falls, VA is better.
@@cardbored5961 cool.
Rode by it on my bike.
the VIEWSSS 😍
Am I the only one who thinks this guy has a very similar sounding voice to Steve-O?!
Great falls park is like 5 minutes from my house
Same, lmao.
Great falls is not in dc lol. It’s just outside of DC. great falls is the border of Maryland and Virginia. If u keep going down the river for like 5 miles you will end up in dc
mk no one outside of dc knows where that is so chill
Great Falls is a town that's right next to Vienna and Tysons Corner. The area is amazing, and it was very fun to kayak down, yet still challenging.
Most likely i would, i do have a 14 foot conew, if i was drunk i might use a old tube from a truck tire.
People also go cliff jumping here, next time let us know your going to be in the area so I can come watch.
Sure. Stay tuned on redbull.com 😉
Jokes on you, I've done it. I live right near by, and you can see people going down in every few minutes.
kayaking like this seems like it would destroy your lower back and spine over time
it doesnt
We always sub back 😊

Not DC
calling the potomac a model for environmental recovery is a bit much.... still polluted....
