  • Ive always wanted to make a stick bait and if I'm going to make one I want it to be best quality bait it could ever be. This is the first of many videos on my quest to construct the perfect stick bait for fishing for striped bass and tuna. In this video I will discuss the concept and show some of the building and designing that is going into making this lure.

I’m down for that lure makin process ride, I’d stick with the striper lures but definitely still check out them tuna baits for sure. Still can’t stress the fact that your channel has upgraded tremendously, gotta give credit when it’s due, do your thing brotha 🎣

Lmao bruh I feel you on the lack of production due to never skimping on quality. Same exact story, started with pencils, after seeing GT popping made my own 230mm, 150g, 45mm cup, 2.4mm 316 wire harness tuna/GT hybrid popper followed by sinking and then eventually floating stickbaits. The difference between getting a lure to swim without a lip using specific gravity, head shape, body shape, ballast position, hook choices….it’s super frustrating but so worth it. Also made a 10”, 3 piece jointed swimmer that’s fully thru wired with two sections of 1.6mm plug wire and abalone side scale. Crazy how much in line our thought processes are from ethics to building bro! And yup, high impact resin is the way to go. If you cut open a strategic angler lure you’ll find that Merv doesn’t even crimp or weld the wire ends for a closed loop harness. The resin is so strong and has so much purchase on the wire he doesn’t need it. Keep it up and if you ever want to bounce ideas off me for floating or sinking stickbaits. If you want to see what in my opinion is the one of the best swimming floaters look up Amegari Kaxu 240 on CZcams and you’ll find a dude who has some footage swimming one in a pool. Too sick.

Man I love this content. Currently doing the same, producing a glide bait and swim bait. I’d love to try one of those stick baits for stripers, and I’ll shoot you one of mine if you want to test.

Hey, Jasper. I just discovered your channel (with the excellent episode on sea-bass jigs ) and immediately subscribed. I think I heard you say that you're a Rhode Islander (where else with the name "Coutu"?), so that may be part of the affinity. I grew up in Providence and spent every spare minute fishing off Little Compton.
Like you, I'm OCD about the lures I build and, like you, I'm unhealthily attracted to stick baits. I too have wondered if this design could be adapted for stripers, but clearly it would have to be slowed WAY down. The insanely fast, violent "ripping" retrieve that is perfect for Giant Trevally and tuna (of all species) isn't going to work on 30- to 40-lb. stripers.
Anyway-as you probably know-the only lure company that makes a great range of stick baits and has a presence in the U.S. market is Nomad. There are plenty of CZcams demos of their various models, and I think they look terrific.
If you haven't yet discovered Greg Budd's channel, it'll rock your world: African Lure Craftsman, czcams.com/channels/gj7rzp5SnESrndnMddZLrg.htmlvideos. In my not-very-humble opinion, Greg is one of the finest lure designers/makers on the planet, and his specialty is . . . stick baits! I strongly recommend that you start with Greg's multi-part "Conquistador" series. If it doesn't whet your appetite (and impress the hell out of you), then you're probably dead. All the best, Chris

Bro you're exactly right it isn't easy by any means... Master Yoda please show me the way to drill a straight hole for thru wire? PLEASE!!! PRETTY PLEASE

Hahaha that’s something that’s the most frustrating. I do it on the wood block as the very first step if I’m turning the lure. I go from the “center” of each end to get them to meet up and i built a jig to do it on my lathe. That said it still only has like a 70% success rate. They’re the worst lol.
