Be careful with your Hyundai (or Kia) door handles. Our Ioniq EV has broken door handles.

- This video is about weak door handles on Hyundai cars. Both rear door handles on our 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric (38kWh) snapped during the cold winter months and then I discovered one had previously broken and glued back together by the previous owner. And all of this was when the vehicle was only two years old and done only 15,000 miles! From what I've since read, its a common issue with this handle design and effects many Hyundai and Kia models and will get replaced under warranty. However, its not a quick job as the handle has to get painted. So its best to just be careful with the handles and not pull them too hard, particular when its cold and the plastic is brittle.

I have a 2018 Ioniq 50.000km and never had an issue with the handles so far, but it is good to know about this possible issue.
Thank you !
😊
Yes, we never had an issue on our 28kWh Ioniq after 102,000 miles, so I do wonder if the handles are now weaker/thinner plastic. Its a common point of failure across the Hyundai range.
@@GoGreenAutos
I am tempted to open the handle assembly and see the state of it... just in case there are some cracks or other visible wear signs. That way I may be able to (hopefully) do something to prevent it from breaking later
That end piece from handle was just replaced from my ioniq under warranty, side was rr, year model 2018. It just snapped off when i opened that door
@@Alex-tj1zo Good idea. Maybe possible to put a small bit of foam where the two plastic parts touch to cushion the contact points.
On 20 thousand miles plus with my 2020 Ioniq no issues yet but will take note and Take care!
I have a 2018 model and it happened on one of my rear doors. Somebody at the dealership was reluctant to repair under warranty because the rear fitting had disappeared, it happened at night. However, it was fixed under warranty. Forums do mention it as a known problem.
I have a 2017 IONIQ, no problem with door handles.
Getting the 2025 IONIQ 5 in a few months so hopefully they will last.
Its a known issue according to the hyundai forums. Plenty of people have had them break. Mines ok so far. Some people just remove the broken parts and araldite them back together. But if under warranty just get the dealer to replace it.
Super useful video thanks. This happened to us this morning 😮
My rear door handle broke and the end cap was lost at just 3k miles. Local dealer replaced it under warranty although they initially and incorrectly thought that the missing bit would prevent a warranty claim.
Yes, some dealerships really do their best to charge the customer rather than making a warranty claim to the manufacturer. I've seen the paperwork a Renault dealer has to do, so I can understand why. Plus their labour rate is then reduced too.
thank you for the warning. ioniq 2018 here
I have had two door handles break on my 2020 Ioniq and I have never had kids in my car and I am never pulling the handles too hard. I think this is an incredibly flawed design like you mentioned, it doesn't take much for the bolt to crack. Ironically, the driver's side door has never broken, the one that I use the most. It was the front passenger door and rear passenger door on the driver's side (the rear one I got fixed a year and a half ago and it is loose again). I am now out of warranty so I don't know how much it will cost to fix the handle at this point. Hyundai should do a recall on all ioniq hybrids because this is an issue that I keep hearing is happening to others. Extremely frustrating and my car only has 38,000 miles on it. The first handle broke around 15,000 miles and again I only gently pull on them to open. I have never heard of a car where the handles break so easily. Definitely buying Toyota for my next car.
Thanks for the heads up.
I always put my thumb on the part that breaks off... meaning there is never any strain on it. So if you wan't to be carefull... do that instead.
Yes I do too now I know. But getting the kids to do that is another thing!
I wonder if them breaking around December time was them needing to be yanked on following a frosty night?
It certainly would have made the plastic brittle and wouldn't have helped. But even so, they shouldn't break when cold.
Just took delivery of a 2022 38kwh Ioniq which until the point of getting to me had just 15 miles on the clock. Within two hours of having it I had the rear right dear handle literally come apart in my hand. Absolutely shocking!
Was it very cold? It seems that the plastic used can't cope with the cold.
Reminds me of our refrigerator. Maybe use four fingers on the handle and opposing force on the non-moving part that breaks.
I broke the rear handle on the yellow 28 I brought from you. My local hyundai dealer wanted £175. I left the car with them about 2 weeks later to do a mot and replace the handle. When I came back they said they forgot to get it sprayed so they said they could fit the unpainted handle or I could come back. So I took it back a week later and they fitted it with no charge, not sure if that's because it's a known issue as I believe the car was out of its 5 year warranty and had done 103000+ miles.
Interesting. Apparently Hyundai will cover it under warranty, but of course that relies on the dealership to actually ask and claim and many will do their best to resist that route if they can.
@@GoGreenAutos well apart from the inconvenience of not having the handle ready leading to multiple visits I was very happy not having to pay for it.
It happened to me on the passenger front door. 30.000 miles EU car 2019 model. In my opinion, I did not yank the door. But I am very strong ofcourse and Dutch and 6'3". So that must be it then. Now I look for replacement, dealers are not helpful at all.....
My 28 version is trouble free. I waited for this morning before I commented and I noticed I put my thumb on the static part so as soon as the door is unlatched I’m then just pulling the door against the spring in the handle, only me gets in so luckily all is good… do you feel the 28 version has different or stronger handles..?
I believe that mine broke because I thought that the door was unlocked, when it wasn't.
Very good information, have not seen it on our car my2019 Ioniq 50.000km
Regards from Sweden
It happened to our 28kWh Ioniq. I wondered if it was guests/visitors who sit in the back who were yanking on the car door handle and causing the problem. No problem (fingers crossed) with the front. Car out of warranty now so I do not know how much the fix would cost now.
Well my 2018 ev ioniq rear driver side handle edge popped off this afternoon 66 000 miles, so much for being stronger fittings, it can happen anytime or not at all.
Can honestly say I've never had a car with dodgy door handles lol
This is distressing. Hopefully the 2021-2023 Kona Electric isn't impacted by this. I hope they've addressed the underlying design flaw.
I have an Ioniq PHEV and door handles fine by my neighbour who has the hybrid also had broken door handles, ( in the winter)
Yes, I think its a winter/cold plastic issue. Still, they should be able to cope with it.
Lots of these being used as taxis around my way (albeit in hybrid form), can’t see it being easy to avoid this issue for them.
That's a good point. The hybrid version is a very common taxi which will have a lot more rear handle use than other cars.
Had this happen on mine, same break - as you say though, will be annoying to have to have it in for a couple of days to have the handle replaced, and from what I gather they just replace it with something of the same design, so likely to happen again.
Have you got any recommendations for a suitable glue to put it back together temporarily?
Repaired mine with plastic welding with metal mesh
Happened to me today, some idiot pulled it very sharply and it broke off, rear left. I used mitre glue to stick it back together until I get a replacement or get sorted under warranty.
How did you sort out ? My one fell off
@londonlive7414 super glue still doing the trick lol. I glue the corner bit where it attaches to the screw inside the door.
Unfortunately it lost somewhere 😞
@@londonlive7414 you will have to go to the dealers for the part my friend
@@radwanmiah8150 much thanks 🙏
This just happened to my daughters on her 2021 ioniq 38kw with just over 20k miles and Hyundai cant fit her in for service for another 2 months to sort this out! ... shocking!
You can glue them back in place and then just be careful with them. It's been a year since we did and I've not had them replaced.
As for the dealer having a 2 months backlog...seems pretty standard now with all dealers, but some are better than others.
@@GoGreenAutos I dont really want to muck about with glue whilst it's under warranty tbh. As for the backlog, its a long e time for something this critical but then again I suppose ive been spoilt with Teslas efficiency for more trivial matters and them coming to me as well.
Children depending on age often fight with one on the outside pulling with all their strength and the other on the inside pulling back. Or they could be like my son who literally breaks everything he ever touches.
Did the 28 kwh accumulate dirt at the same positions on the doors?
Where can I buy these door handle peices, besides the dealership?
Used ones of eBay from breakers. But apart from that, new from Hyundai.
Where can I get , this back side piece, as fell off last yesterday
Used eBay, new Hyundai dealer.
@@GoGreenAutos gonna check now, appreciate
Mines just done this on my 2018 😢
Lucky me with a 28kWh version.. 🤞
it broke for me today 2018 65k km
Good grief!
Chinese plastic crap with Hyundai Logo. Mine are also broken..
