One point you missed. Cameras don't work in the dark. The S5's laser navigation works in any lighting condition. Where Rumba's doesn't.

I'm guessing roomba uses an IR camera that works fine in the dark, there would be no reason for a colour camera.

Simonas Mažeikis there have been many people reporting that the i7 doesn't work in the dark, i don't know if it's a bug or if it's the camera. maybe an update will fix this in the future

    •  Před 5 lety +1

On the other hand static cameras are less likely to break than the rotating laser navigation that tends to fail a lot.

I love the S5. I recently returned my i7+ that I was having issues with and picked up a D7. Decided to order the S50 as well and see what that extra few hundred bought me with the Neato. As much as I love the Neato, the Roborock seems like a much better value. I love the tracking on the app, it cleans just as well and the battery life is superior. This is my 2nd Neato and as much as I love the brand and the D7, I’m returning it.

Just a few tips for the Roborock s50 users. The washable hepa filters should not be washed constantly. In fact, I do not wash mine at all. Much longer life will be achieved by just giving the filter a good tapping instead. The replacement filters (at least the ones I bought) have a fine mesh screen on one side of the filter, they are awesome...better than the original that came with the unit. The screen stops the larger items from passing through and clogging up the filter. If you have a air compressor...even better, the mesh screen protects the filter from the blast of air, the filter is cleaned and you can get almost unlimited life out of your filter. Remember...The filter is still a paper type product, water is not it's friend. On the ends of the roller are grooves that tend to gather hair, you can find rubber o-rings that will fit these grooves. Make sure the rings are not too thick, and that they drop inside the groove a bit, the slick silicon type seems to work best. These units require some maintenance, there is just no way around it...But, once you have the routine figured out it's pretty easy and quick.I really like mine.

The review is now (January 2020) a bit dated, since the i7 now can create no-go zones also.
Plus, since the introduction of the base vacuum, any robot from any vendor without that feature is now obsolete. It's that much of an improvement! I NEVER need to empty out the tiny little dust bin on the back of the robot.
When I first got the i7+ I was disappointed that it was leaving little clumps of long black dog hair on the carpet. Turns out that the small replaceable filter inside the robot was really jammed up with dust (many years of dust inside the carpet, I guess) and the suction power was very low. Replaced the filter (about ~$2 on Amazon) and the robot now vacuums great.
You do need to buy big dust bags for the base unit vacuum, but the bags last a long time, the robot will tell you when it needs replacing, a little self-sealing door makes disposal very neat and clean, and the bags are very cheap from third-party suppliers, under $2.50 a bag in quantity.
It's fun to see how competition improves products. The i7+ wasn't cheap but it really works well.

I still can't decide between 2 robots. I managed to find the same price ($400-$420) Roomba i6+(used) and Roborock s5 max (like new) ($400-$420 respectively) and can't decide what to get. I have mostly carpets at 80 sq.m. apartment, linoleum and tiles in kitchen and bathroom, also a cat and a 8 y.o. kid and one 40 y.o. one as a hubby)). I was so determined to buy a Roborock S5, and after having bought one, will be returning it as it super buggy, it runs good the first time (plural as I factory restored it), but every next time it draws new unrealistic map, or pursuing one zone like 3 times and doesn't go to others etc. So now having heard that Roborock's support is not great, I'm afraid to buy from them although I like the idea of mopping, but self-empting bin sounds also kind of fun as for Roomba.
Few years ago we had iClebo for just a year as it died and to repair it was a cost of a new one, so we never saw that $600 again. So I don't plan to have a new robot every year.
    So my questions are:
    1. which one would you pick out of Roomba i6+ and RR S5 max? How long do you think they realistically will last considering using them almost every or every other day?
    2. And what is the best value overall (considering both are $400)?

I’ve had a RoboRock S4 for a few days and really like it. Mapped my complex first floor on its first run. But I also just ordered an i7+. The negative with robovacs without a dustbin sensor is that they continue to clean, even when the dustbin is full... which means they can’t get up all the pet fur and debris. With both a cat and a chocolate lab, we get plenty of pet fur/hair/debris to vacuum. Fortunately the dustbin on the S4 is one of the larger ones, but I’ve found it full after every run. So the self empty feature of the i7+ will be a welcome feature.
Also, current price of the S4 is $299 on Amazon (through today, Dec 1). And the i7+ is $699 today (not sure for how long), so I ordered one of those today as well. I’ll be interested to see how they compare.
The RoboRock S6 goes on sale Dec 2-8 for @$449 on Amazon. But the real value to me is the S4 for under $300.
This is a great time to shop for robovacs.

I have an Alaskan Malamute that likes to leave long hair everywhere and once the bot gains control of the area, it keeps it pretty clean. By the 3rd cleaning the dust bin was only about a 1/3 full. In contrast, my kid bought the iRobot i9+(on sale) That thing is around $1,400 and I gotta say, i'm not that impressed. Don't get me wrong, it does a good job. Just not a $1,400 job. It is because the i7 empties on its own,it is like, if you really appreciate this feature, and dont care about the price , go for it.
Obviously the most rational option is the S5, but there are people out there who prefer to get a robot that is not as smart, but will empty on its own( lets be fair, it is a pretty great feature) and they dont care about the extra cost cause it wont make a difference for them.

    • @Msigw
      @Msigw Před 5 lety +2

guigovr Has humanity really reached the point where we can’t be bothered to empty a dust bin every couple days? Not only do we want robot vacs, but we also need them to empty themselves? lol. Eventually you’ll have to empty the main bin... so you’re literally dealing with sub optimal performance to avoid dumping a smaller bin a little more often? Price aside, he straight up says the performance is less than great. If cost is no issue, get 5 S5s then. I dunno, it’s still strange to see a whole video singing praises of a half cost vac, that performs better... and still for some reason recommend the more expensive, poorer performing one. Umm, that’s completely counter to the entire previous 8 minute video.
Rolling pin A is 5$ and does an amazing job! But hey, there’s rolling B over here that doesn’t do as good of job, you don’t have roll as often, and it gets the job done - sorta. Oh, and it costs twice as much, 10$... You should buy B! I guess, just cuz! Cmon. What’s the point of these videos comparing them then? Actually, now that I think about it, give me 1200$ and I’ll come do a half ass job of vacuuming your house whenever you want, for the about 3 years we can expect these things to last. Or pay your neighbor 500$ to empty your S5 every other day, or however long it takes to fill. I hope these things sound ridiculous, that will fit right in with the message of this video. Nonsense.

Impressive stuff. Robotics virtual lining is insanely cool. And seems to be on par for quite a bit less money. I’d be worried about warranty stuff for robotics the most. I’ll stick with Roomba for now but good to see competition is catching up.

So, I bought an i7+ and after 1 full run, the motor died. iRobot sent me a replacement unit (they were back-ordered on replacement motors)...the new one worked great for about 4 days...when the left wheel stopped working and it started going in circles and erroring out everytime I ran it. So I returned it and ordered the Roborock S6 MaxV. I see a lot of good reviews on the Roomba....but seriously 2 bad units in a row. That kills any excitement I had.

I would also add, which is evident from your footage also and from my experience is that most vacuums tend to bump into walls ALTO like more than necessary which I assume helps with getting into crevices etc. However the Roborock S5 and S6 basically don't touch the walls if it can be helped which I love.

Another great review, very thorough! However, although I feel that your reviews on the actual hardware of these vacuums is top-notch, I'd love to see more of your opinion of how you feel using these day to day. For example, does the Roomba work well even if the rooms are too bright/too dark? How are they if you move them to multiple floors with different floor plans?

How are both of these in going from a hardwood floor to a gray carpet on the floor, cleaning the carpet and coming off of a gray gradient carpet? My current Deebot’s fall sensors get very confused on the gray carpet/rug in the center of the room.

I have both, roomba has nogo zones now :)
Battery life is nowhere neer as good but here's my real world test.
I vacuumed the whole house with s5, manually emptied the dustbin half way through.
Then vacuumed the whole house with s7+ by the end of the clean.. The s7+ had picked up a entire bin of dirt...
So as far as cleaning power goes the s7+ is way better, and with the auto empty feature it's autonomous the s5 has to be emptied in the middle of its cleans and it never tells you when it's full it just keeps trying.
Also the i7+ can control its wheels in dependant of its vacuum so Whne it gets stuck on cables it turns off the vac and reverse out the s5 just gets tangled and errors.
Overall I love them both but the s7+ is a clear winner in the real world.

I enjoyed the video much more when I slowed down the video playback speed so that I could compare the cleaning patterns. The Xiaomi has a more logical and efficient pattern. You sped up the Roomba video. I own no robot vacuums. 4:33 The Roomba Seems lost for quite a while. 4:41 Roomba moves your carpets and things around white the Roborock does not. 4:43 It looks like you had to "help" the Roomba a bit which again tarnishes your experiment. I gave your video a thumbs up though. Well done.

Guess I am not 'first' to comment on this video, but had to chime in since I just bought the Roborock. I'm very impressed with how well it cleans and so far it doesn't get stuck . . . much. It's really great that I can get vacuumed floors everyday without having to do anything but empty the bin. And yeah, that bin is too small. I've got pets and it fills fast. Would be very nice if Xiami could figure out a way to alert the user when the bin is full, otherwise, I doubt it cleans well when running around with a full bin. But at $399 (walmart.com), it's less than half the price of the I7 and a third the price of the i9, so with my budget, it was a 'no brainer'. I might get a second one for upstairs. Or maybe I'll try a different one with a bigger bin, like one of the Neatos. I saw the D7 for less than 550 on Amazon Prime day, but they sold out of the heavily discounted ones. Maybe Black Friday . . .

What about the filters? How often do they need cleaning in order to maintain suction? Would love to see a suction test with one that's not empty. I mean the reality is most of the time the filters get laden with dust after just one room. The clean base empties the bin what about the filter? I feel like with the clean base you would ignore the filter more often which would just lead to overall less performance.

    One Question:
When you pick up any robot with a mapping feature and you place it down. Will it figure out where it is? Or is it based on wherever it's station is and does it have to start from the station. Will a re-mapping be required once I switch the stations location?

    • @CannabisTechLife
      @CannabisTechLife Před 4 lety

More than likely once the robot has fully mapped its space then it would know its location no matter where you put the base because the physical structure of the space would be the same.

Interesting about the suction with newer i7. I had the same issue and felt the i7 was way weaker than my 980. I contacted roomba and they sent out a new vac motor which did nothing. I wonder if it was a software change with newer vac's. Finally the hair was address in your vac war. I have to clean my roomba after every run because of the hair around the ends and inside the bearing which unchecked will get very very hot on use.
I might buy another i7 if the suction is any better since the mapping and sound is way better
