    Hi jus199,
that tone is called "Iuna" and was created by Mestre Bimba.
The Iuna game is for mestres only (or high graduated students).
It's not an aggressive or ful-contact game.
Instead it's very elegant and flowing, born to show the beauty of Capoeira :-)

The musical bow is also found in ancient cultures from places like: Greece, Japan, Nepal, India, Rome, etc.
Each place gave it a name, so it has over a hundred. The Portuguese in Brazil named the hybrid instrument that arose there Berimbau Da Barriga, which literally means Jaw Harp of the Stomach.

@natureboy84 It plays three different notes and can be variated using the cabassa (gourd) to resonate the sounds on those notes. As a percussion instrument the possibilities are endless on the berimbau

Yep! I'm brazilian and i love the sound of berimbau and i must say that Cavalera created an impressive combination of sounds introducing the berimbau to our so loved heavy metal. Awesome.

Sudan region. The Bantu people, from the Angolan region were the second largest ethnicity to be brought into Brazil (mostly to the southeast). And that is besides the point too, especially since the first berimbaus, as we know them today, emerged in Bahia, where most Blacks (90%) are of Sudanese origin.

most western instruments can only play 12 unique notes, and most western musicians can't really do all that much with them. The minimalism of the berimbau is something that can definitely be appreciated along with its unique sound. It's power and complexity is in its simplicity.

Well - it's not that clear cut. The musical bow is an instrument found in well over 120 cultures (documented. There are almost certainly many more undocumented). It is found all over the African continent, and it is extremely likely that it came to Brazil with African slaves, hailing from a variety of tribes/regions/"nations". BUT the musical bow is ALSO indigenous to parts of South America (including modern-day Brazil), though it doesn't always appear exactly like the berimbau.

not so true, a few historiers, principaly europeans, claims that in Africa there is nothing that looks like the Capoeira played in Brasil. Also, there are registers that tells brazilians native-americans used to play Capoeira to have fun, 100 years before the africans were brang to Brasil. Obviously, that capoeira was very diferent from what we know as capoeira today. The word Capoeira comes from the Tupi, a brazilian native language: "Caa" means grass, bushes and "Puera" means recently cut.

If you don't belong to some culture, probably you'd not have more profound feelings to understand it better. You need a more sensitive ear to see how skilled he is, playing this difficult Berimbau. The variations of vibrations and rithm changes a lot, but you only can hear that if you have trainned ears...
