Headlight Restoration with OFF Bug Spray Improved Method

- As most of you have probably seen on Facebook and CZcams, there is a method of restoring headlights going around the internet using OFF Deep Woods or a similar DEET containing bug repellent spray. At first I thought it was a joke, but I investigated further and found out it DOES work, but it isn't a perfect method. Here I address some of the problems with the OFF method, and teach you how to do it yourself!
I do like the way he delivered the Info with no extra Chitchat, or unnecessary talk and music. just getting to the point, i stopped using OFF because it leavening me with sticky headlight, but thanks to you I will back
to using it, thank you so much
Thank you so much for the vinegar after wash tip! Your video is a great example of getting to the point and promoting your business in a healthy manor, so many people waste our time with ramblings of off topic crap that nobody tuned in for. I hope people in Cincinnati see this and go to your shop. I'm in Florida but i rep the who dey nation lol Go bengals!
This works great. You need to spay a couple coats of UV protectant after to make it last a long time.
Thanks for this information! I'll try to remember it when my headlights get foggy a few years down the road. This is a lot better than the expensive and tiresome kits I bought to clear the lights on my last car!
Thanks for the tip. Using off, washing with Windex and then waxing works but this looks easier and probably works better by the Vinegar neutralizing the Deet.
Good review, thanks. YES it worked and the vinegar removed the rest of the grime.
Cool man! I just purchased all the items needed to do the job, looking forward to seeing the results. Thanks for the input.
how did it hold up against the test of time?
I tried this method and it worked GREAT..! He's right, the Vinegar is the key to removing the tacky surface after cleaning, also.. Only do it once per cleaning! I thought if I kept cleaning a few times with the Deet ti would get cleaner but found the opposite happens, the lens becomes blurry, maybe too much plastic melting, not sure.. But just once and be done. I also treated them with a nice couple coats of Car wax and buffed to help protect from UV..
Once it drys, i had no issue with continued stickiness
Thanks for passing this on to us.
I'm going to try this method. I have been told that part of what you're removing in addition to the oxidation is a protective coating of gloss. it was recommended to me that after you have done all that you said in the video, then use something like Rust-Oleum gloss spray to seal and restore the protective gloss coating. let me know what you think.
Thank you so much for the video , have a question, I left a little bottle of deet spray in glove compartment, which manufactures felt melted and became a goop mess 😀 How can I fix without spending so much at dealer? 🤙🏼
how well has it held up since you've done this? should a clear coat be applied afterwards?
I did try this on mine and so far so good without the vinegar I have a 2008 Toyota sienna.
Thanks. This helped a lot
Good job my Ohioan friend. Will definitely have to try this application soon.
I tried this on my 05 sunfire headlights. They was so hazy but after this looked almost bran new
Works great and wipe it with alcohol and an then spray it with protective coating I did it works great great!!! I'm.goung to try your method then spray protective coating on it I think it kilmer's channel that recommended the protective coating that doesn't yellow!
When did you do your personal truck headlights/ how long before you showed them. Just heard it don't last long at all
try yellow off wipes. I heard they work great.
I been using Off forever. It works
Another YT video just showed "Repel" worked very well. A commenter said that "Off" didn't work as well.
Thank you 😊
Get back to making videos please, love your content ❣️
One headlight looks better, The other one, I kept wiping because it wasn't doing good, now it is worse. Anyone has a solution? Should I sand it?
How they still holding up curious?
Thanks buddy
Question does this last long term? Also, shouldn't you wax the headlight so it can last longer?
No, it's a band-aid and short-term solution.
@@brettvukovich6220 weird I polished it after it, used a good clear coat ..
Been 2 years ,one heck. Of a bandage
Luckily I don't have the problem, but nine years later can someone report on longevity
How about some clear coat after that?
Kinda...it wouldn't be ideal because then still potential for hazy finish...just wax it and keep it waxed after deet and your in there
Great video .
very helpful
STILL A GOOD VIDEO TODAY
The car companies suck , why not just glass ?
My 1990 Toyota Camry had glass headlight lenses that looked great until I got rid of it decades later. Why did the car makers stop using glass and switch to plastic? I think that most people would be willing to spend a little more for their new car to totally avoid the cloudy lenses by having glass. Thanks.
Several reasons, namely safety (glass can shatter from impacts or more importantly thermal shock [driving in winter if your lens goes from 110 to -20 in the span of 6 minutes every day for a year...not a great time.]) as well as weight. Saving 5-10 pounds on the curb weight can eek out another 0.01 MPG.
Glass also wasn't without its issues, you couldn't reasonably make a modern projector lens with it. It certainly can't handle the heat of a HID (see thermal shock comment above) and while it didn't haze it did pit badly over time, leading to a less noticeable but still problematic refraction of light.
Easier and cheaper to form and shape the plastic . It allows for development of a variety of shapes to go along with creating new models. Most glass headlights are often squared and "boxy" whereas the plastic ones you could probably shape them however you'd want them to be.
It worked for my truck
An o'reliiys worker put bug spray on my headlight. It helped a few weeks. Frosted WORSE THAN EVER.now I need a new headlight.
How long did it last?
A week
So what I see based on video and comments, , wipe with 40% deet, wash with with alcohol, seal with a proper plastic clear coat made for headlights. Dont use clear coat plastic paint. If we can tune this properly, a wipe only solution that looks pretty decent can be had.
I tried it ..it works but only one week then there got foggy again 🤷🏼♂️
you need to spay a couple coats UV protectant after.
I found that alcohol and baby powder works just can't let it dry on surface
12:07 Thank you so much.
It worked on my cars
How long did the headlights remain clear?
I highly doubt it
Long enough to get it off the lot.
but if u rinse it it will get on ur bumper paint and ruin it
No, stop watching Chris Fix.
Vinegar eats paint tho
I heard off takes your paint right off. Better use painters tape.
cute chub
I can’t believe 6yrs ago was 2016. The country has gone to shit since then. Thanks Democrats.
Trump caused all the headlights to yellow.
Isn't just democrats
Hope you've gotten help for your mental breakdown.
So the Democrats are the reason my headlights are foggy? Bastards!
Supposed to clear coat them as final step smh
This is an absolutely terrible idea.
Well this is what you should expect from a used car salesman,a hack! What he don’t tell you is they turn white later . Wet sand them with 600 then 1200 then buff with rubbing compound then polishing compound. Don’t be a hack!
1 If you all haven't seen a documentary called... It's worse then you think... By revelations of Jesus Christ ministry... I suggest you do... All praise and glory to the most high Jesus Christ
Will it help to make my headlights clear?
