Awsome story
Dude the story of the Chilean sheep herder who found them was definitely worth mentioning. His name was Sergio Catalan, he was with his son and when he understood the situation he threw bread and water across the river with a hopeful message. Then he rode his horse for hours to get them help. When he told police they called the rescue team to Santiago who at first didn't believe him, saying he was some drunk cowboy making up stories. He had to convince authorities his tale was real. Survivors visited him for years and some attended his funeral on 2020. He was hero, not some nameless person.
Thank you for mentioning him, also these people were incredibly brave and did this for unselfish reasons in order to return to their families.
Dude was so nice to strangers. A true hero

He had to ride his horse for over 10 hours, and then got in a lorry/truck for a couple of hours more to get to the nearest police post to ask for help.
I thought they trekked down the mountain? And if they had gone the other direction there was a road not far from where they crashed
*Imagine judging them, while you're just there resting with comfortable life.*
Not to mention that a lot of these hypocrites would start cannibalizing each other after a few hours.
People who have likely never felt the feeling of TRUE starvation. Who like to say âOh, Iâm starving.â and think theyâre actually starving. I will admit, Iâd be sad if a family member of mine was eaten⊠but I would try to block it out, work on my understanding. Sometimes it happens⊠itâs not pretty for either side, people are acting like the survivors enjoyed it because the dead couldnât. I wouldnât have a grudge against those who had to do it, I would be sad for everyone involved with just a little more sentimentality towards the one I knew personally who didnât survive.
People find it easy to judge when they are living so comfortably.
"How could they eat humans? There's always another way!"
They say as the adjust the temperature on their AC. Opening their 5th packet of Oreos, snuggled in a blanket.
Cannibalism is taboo, but do what you have to do to survive.
If I had died, I would be fine with my friends eating my dead body to keep themselves alive, Iâm already dead.
Agreed. It's just a body. I would be dead, and I would much rather someone use what remained of me to live than for them to die due to trying to show respect for the dead. I would be much happier to know I saved a life.

This is the greatest survival story ever. The sacrifice, the effort and the hope that these people managed during the most difficult situation is extraordinary.
The Shackleton expedition rescue is also pretty extraordinary. If youâre not familiar, check it out. When it comes to surviving, your body and mind is prepared to do the most unthinkable tasks! Despite of extreme physical exhaustion, scarcity of food and no basic equipments they managed to get through such difficult path to seek help, this is some commendable amount of willpower!
What an incredible story and such strength of human spirit and will. Anyone who would criticise these amazing people for what they did to survive, do not know struggle.
Hi! I'm uruguayan and wanted to point something out. When the video says that Nando Parrado didn't knew that the small gesture of trading places with his friend would end up saving his life, it's because later after hitting the first mountain peak the plane broke in two *just behind that seat*, the one Nando was sitting on after giving his back seat so his friend could watch the Cordillera. If he had not, he would have flown away on his seat, and that is what happened to his friend.
Also, Roberto Canessa, who was 19 and a medical student at the time, was the first to make the cut through the human bodies so they could eat them, as he knew the human body well. He is now 66 years old and a cardiologist. He was and is saving human lives.

True
Exactly
Steve L source?
The reason why people got mad at them after that newspaper report was because initially, the survivors hid the fact that they feasted on the dead, claiming they had cheese and were able to find plants. The only person they told was a priest in the sanctity of confession. Almost as soon as they were rescued rumors started floating around that they killed some of their friends so they could eat them, so the report along with the hiding of the fact made some people think they were savages.
The title of this video is not adequate for such a sensitive story. It was a tragedy and the survivors faced incredible challenges and made difficult decisions to remain alive and to return back with their families... This is a story of human resiliency, teamwork, faith, courage and survival. The way we describe and remember such events should be done with respect and sensitivity, honoring those who survived and those who did not make it, as well as their families.

Cannibalism is more of an ideology, a cannibal is a person who chooses to consume another human being for pleasure or out of compulsion. When done purely for survival the label has no merit for me, never underestimate the human will to live nor shame the actions of those who have faced these do or die situations.
If they suffered no conditions from eating human I would say they deserved to survive
It is considered cannibalism either way, but if they didn't do it they would have most likely all died. I don't know if I could do it although I'm sure the choice would be much easier to make in their position.

Hello I'm from Uruguay and I had a meeting with one of the survivors where he told us the complete story.
I don't expect them to have all of the details but some important details are either wrong or missing.
One of the details he gave me about the rations was that by day 3 (I believe) they heard on the radio that the search and rescue party had found the location of the plane, so everyone started feasting on the food like there was no tomorrow. It turned out that the S&R party mistook the plane crash with another thing (I can't remember with what but they didn't have a clue where the plane actually was).
Also, a detail that they forgot to mention was that, both pilots, had made a mistake. They told the passangers that they had just flown over the city of CuricĂł, Chile when instruments were telling them otherwise. They mistook it with another city and thus when the survivors were trying to locate themselves, they assumed their position was elsewhere rather than where it actually was.
Another thing I remember was that when they decided to resort to eating the dead, they all had agreed that if one of them was to die, the rest could feed from the recently deceased survivor and they were to tell the story to their relatives.
Last, I recall him saying he didn't like the idea of flying on a Friday 13th, becasue he was superstitious and all.

There's very few people that would be able to deny food in any form when they are starving. I was there for 5-6 days. It was probably around day 4 that I seriously started obsessing.
@@hokagesama5669 Well, my psyche is quite weak so I would've probably took an easy way out in that situation.
Those guys are the toughest of the tough. Dudes did beyond what even military forces today would dare to do. These people have my upmost respect and should be awarded something for their bravery
Their life is a good enough reward, plus I doubt they want people to know them in person especially after everything man
And the crazy thing is these were just some random average kids. You or me or just about anyone could have been on that plane and would have probably done the same. It's crazy what just average everyday people are capable of to survive when put in a life or death situation. There is a beast in all of us, we just succumb to our comforts.
@@andrewmaclean9810 Well, luckily most of the passengers were not totally average kids since they were rugby players in great physical shape. It wouldâve been a lot worse if they were a bunch of fat people traveling to a chocolate expo, a school class with children or something other than athletes đ
Nevertheless, what a horrible experience for all of them. I canât imagine how hopeless they must have felt with no sign of rescue :( They needed to become their own heroes and thatâs what they did with extraordinary powers provided by survival mode! đȘ
They weren't professional athletes, they were amateur rugby players. The team was formed by 19 former students of a Uruguayan school, most of them university students reunited to play a match organised by the captain (the other 21 passengers were relatives or friends who'd been invited to fill the plane and pay less for each ticket). Unlike what is shown in this video, there was no coach. Many of them were heavy smokers, and the ones who weren't started smoking heavily in the mountains because the only thing they had plenty of was cigarettes. Only 5 of the 16 survivors were members of the team, some of the others had previous medical conditions, and one is called 'Fat Francois' (btw he had to be sedated to return to Uruguay after the rescue, and has never got on a plane since). That's why they say 'it wasn't a matter of physical strength, in the Andes if you lost hope, you died'.
Most of the survivors give conferences around the world telling their survival story. Thirty years after the accident, they realised that their mission was to help people by sharing their heartwrenching experience, and saying that if they could, anyone can overcome the mountain(s) all of us have in our life. And they also give interviews, especially for the Latin American media.
It's utmost*, but I agree with you
also forgot to mention how incredible it was that only three people that werenât buried by the snow and managed to save 13 other people who were buried in the snow in only two minutes đ€Ż
Watching a infographics video is the best way to keep entertained the full day
WHY TF WOULD YOU BE MAD AT PEOPLE FOR NOT WANTING TO DIE
I know right
How CAN SOMEBODY DISLIKE THE VIDEO WHEN IT HASNT EVEN BEEN UP LONG ENOUGH TO WATCH THE WHOLE THING
same thing that people give a movie or series rating of 10 or 0 before watching it
JustCall Me Earth there's always gonna be dislike on a video no matter what

The only video I have ever actually hit the dislike button on is the 2018 CZcams rewind

The soul is more powerful then the body. Humankind can survive beyond its limits
The brain but whuteva
You're not surviving anything stranded in the mountains in below freezing temperatures with nothing edible within a 25-mile radius.
@@FreddyChoppins You just saw a video of people who survived that :)
FrĂ©dĂ©ric Chopin you literally just watched a video of them trekking 37 miles in harsh conditions to get to civilization đ
FrĂ©dĂ©ric Chopin please be joking you literally just saw them able to do that. The human body truly makes you fill its Limited and fragile but you are strong đȘ nothing can beat your mind. YOU are the only person to beat your mind because no one controls it
The most inspiring thing here for me was the moment they heard that search parties would no longer search for them so they were like âIf the world wont find us,then we willâ really heart warming.
Whoâs here after watching the movie âSociety of the Snowâ?
Title is misleading and should be changed. They went through so much to just be described as âcannibalsâ by some people. That shouldnât be what defines their story.
They do often say in interviews they wish people would focus on other parts. Cannibalism was just apart of the trauma.
The real thing is, nobody knows if weâd turn to cannibalism to survive. Thatâs the last resort, and we cannot be sure of our actions until weâre in the moment.
I always wondered what human meat taste like.
@@matthewj1997 đ Actually, human supposedly tastes most like pork, which is why it is called "long pig". Didn't you ever watch Fried Green Tomatoes?
I know I'd turn for sure. Probably start the arm which is the least gross.
If I die, you can hollow out my body and make a skin suit. To keep you entertained while waiting for rescue.
You're welcome.
thx

-22F is freezing where I am from in Canada. I work outdoors, and you have to wear layers of clothing in an 8-10 hour day. To survive overnight, without being dressed for the elements would be a nightmare. Without food, warm clothing, and medical supplies, it's amazing anyone survived those conditions.
Yes but unfortunately numerous people seem to think that they should have attempted to walk out almost right away. In early spring when the crash happened the Andes was still covered in snow from a winter that had more snowfall than had been seen in decades. Whatâs not mentioned in the video is that they got the insulation from the tail they found about a month after the crash. By the time the sleeping bag was sewn together it was late spring and the snow had melted a fair bit plus the temperature had moderated enough that they had a chance. Btw, if youâre not aware, they made a movie about this incident in 1993 that was filmed in the Canadian Rockies not far from the Panorama ski resort. Weather permitting they would fly by helicopters every day shooting the movie scenes on a glacier. The actors experienced a small sampling of what those survivors went through. Nando was a consultant for it as well and often joined them on the glacier. The name of the movie is Alive starring Ethan Hawke.
I cannot imagine having to do what they did. The emotions they went through, having to eat their loved ones like their friends/family to be able to survive. They were strong mentally, to be able to do that. They were smart too, having stitch up a blanket using wires.
You at a certain point have to be able to turn off emotions and push through it
I remember when reading the book : They ate the pilot first as it was his fault that they crashed. lol
Alvaro Olaechea itâs because they donât know them.
Alvaro Olaechea which book did you read?
@@adrianaw4011 I had to survive
They obviously would start eating the pilots first bc they aren't their friends.
I read "A Sociedade da Neve" (in Portuguese), prior to reading the book, all I knew about the story is that they ate people. What I loved about the book though was the fact that this is not the main topic, it was a means to survival, and this is what the book focused on, the individuals and survival. Amazing book!
as soon as you said it was friday the 13th i knew they were toast
sydney jackson burnt toast
Fire toast
Weird thing, in Latin Countries the unlucky one is Tuesday the 13th...
They had to pretend their friends were toast.
Your not going to believe me when I tell you I was born on Friday the 13.
"we'll die, but we'll die trying"
they didn't die.
Anyone here after watching Society of the Snow?
They made an amazing movie about in the 90s itâs called âAliveâ. It gives a more in depth visual look to the loss, choices, and physical toll they all took.
but the documentary is better
I saw the movie, was very real!
I saw the movie. Was very hard to see some parts of the movie, well, that was for me.
@@1000xtati and the book even better
Very inaccurate though, not supported by the survivors. I recommend "La sociedad de la nieve" (documentary)
My fav quote is by Roberto canessa(one of the survivors)
It's when the avalanche started.
"it can always get worse unless you're dead"
Carlitos Paez is actually the son of a artist and had an upper-class background. He always noted that he never lifted a finger his whole life, even had breakfast in bed and his own nanny. The crash thrusted him to grow up and he clearly rose to the occasion when he sewed the sleeping bags, contributing to the survival of those who walked out of the mountains.
