  • The rental market in New York City is crazy. Everyone knows it! However, we love NYC SO much that we decided to join the Manhattan apartment hunt to see if we can find a place that's perfect for us. We laid out our budget, our must-haves, and our nice-to-haves before scheduling unit tours. Some things we're looking for? A nice kitchen, laundry in-unit, space for our cat Micia, outdoor space, good lighting, a doorman building, and more. The budget? $6,000 per month USD. We sort of feel like this is our very own Pasini version of "House Hunters". Tell us which apartment YOU think we should have chosen in the comments!

As a New York native, I've lived everywhere in NYC. My honest advice is not to live in the city (Manhattan). The prices are insane. Everything is overpriced. You can easily find a much more affordable place that's even bigger and better in any other borough. Believe me, you'll still have all the luxury and availability of the city with a much better budget. Definitely try Brooklyn or Queens. You won't be sorry 😀

If you can give up the idea of living in Manhattan itself, you could definitely find more affordable rents in the other boroughs. Since you love Arthur Ave so much perhaps an apartment in that area. Or parts of Queens and/or Brooklyn that are very close to Manhattan would work for you. Esp. since you can get some great views of the Manhattan skyline from those places.

I feel like you guys should look for an apartment/condo/townhouse/house in Brooklyn or Queens as it's still close enough to Manhattan without Manhattan's prices. Also, you guys should try temporary living. There's a commercial I keep seeing on CZcams that says you can move as often as you want to many cities all over the world, and you move into fully furnished apartments every time you move, you stay as long as you want in one place then move to the next. A month in NYC, three in San Francisco, 2 weeks in San Diego, 2 months in Chicago, then back home to Nashville, or you could find an apartment in one of the cities if you fall in love with the city.

Live where you can afford, live in Nashville, vacation in NYC for 2 weeks every year. Eat the good Italian food while you are visiting. Rent a better unit with a full size range to cook in though.
But Nashville is expensive as well. At least you can grow your own food in Nashville. Save money with a backyard garden. Go to Italy on vacation every third year, or fifth year. Live your best life and be happy. Looking out for your cat's best interest made me very happy, thank you. My black cat is sitting here watching with me, she thought that was very nice too. 👵❤️🐈‍⬛

It’s a pet friendly building with a full time doorman, outdoor space, and gym. 2 bed/2 bath with a large kitchen, large balcony, and washer-dryer in unit. Doesn’t have the view of the first one, but faces a quiet tree lined street with a view of Manhattan in the distance. Modern building and modern apartment in a good neighborhood. 2 blocks away from the train station and only 20-30 minutes away from Manhattan. There are a lot of nice apartments in your budget.

One thing I experienced and seen with recent Tiktok stories is don’t rent a place at your top budget because they could easily raise the rent when your lease renews and you will be hunting for a new place again. Go for the 2nd or 3rd option if you think your budget couldn’t handle an increase the next year or so. I have seen a lot of people with 20%+ increase in rent since the pandemic.

While Manhattan is most definitely expensive, the other boroughs aren’t. Before she had me, my mom lived in the Rego Park/Forest Hills, Queens area and she commuted to work in Manhattan on the M and R. If you don’t mind taking the subway, you can very much live in Queens, Brooklyn or even the Bronx around Arthur Ave. Remember, transit is meant for EVERYONE
Another thing to consider is to move to NJ, more specifically urban Hudson County. It still feels like NYC, but not quite. I used to live in Jersey City and I enjoyed the convenience of being right across the Hudson from Manhattan and being able to go there whenever I wanted without having to worry about the price just to commute like I do now for the LIRR. Jersey City, while now pricey due to housing demand, is still cheaper than Manhattan. But neighboring towns like Union City and Weehawken are cheaper and pretty good thanks to transit options.

New york is expensive but if you above 96th st in Manhattan or in the outer boroughs you can easily find stuff this size and with these amenities for much cheaper. In fact, it's easier to get around in Manhattan if you live on the L or M in Brooklyn anyway and you can find MUCH larger one bedrooms for $3,000 to $4000

The prices are crazy. One months rent would have paid my mortgage for almost six months! Salaries must be a lot higher in NY! Regarding the furnished apartment-I never would have considered an apartment I could only see in the dark.
NY can be your favorite place to visit and refresh. For me that is Kauai and Venice. I always want to live there when I visit but untruth it probably wouldn't be as special if I did. With your sweet backyard I would think you would

Or go out to the suburbs and you can spend less money for a mortgage, and still be close enough to the city that you could go there whenever you want. I'm in the lower Hudson Valley, either a 90 minute drive to midtown or 90 minute train ride to Grand Central, and my mortgage plus two car payments and insurance is less than the cheapest apartment they looked at. And at the start of COVID, so many people left the city and started buying up here that housing prices skyrocketed.

Maybe rent another nicer VRBO apt you really love. You can visit all your favorite places, enjoy the BIG city vibe as long as you want, , then go back to your restful place in Nashville. Best of both worlds, & a lot less expensive! Wishing you both much happiness in this New Year! I hope all your dreams come true! ❤

I'm not surprised that the rent was so high. And those were some decent sized apartments. But if you really want to move to NYC, I'd suggest living in Queens. It's much cheaper. For that amount of rent money you could buy a house and pay the mortgage. Where I live in Queens, it's near enough to drive to Arthur Ave in less than 20 minutes, without traffic. You'd still be close to the city of you wanted to visit but it's nice and quiet. Even if you decide against living in NYC, I'm glad that you enjoyed your time here. Watching your NYC vlogs put a smile on my face. Buona fortuna per quello che fai ❤

Cash Jordan did a video about a luxury rental in East Orange, NJ. Two bedroom, spacious apartments with all the amenities for around $5,500 a month. Granted, if you're living in NJ or the NY suburbs (upstate NY, LI) then you need to take into account the cost of owning, driving, and maintaining an automobile.

Having lived in New York (Manhattan) for over 30 years, when you are looking for apartments, you need to make a lot of compromises. I also suggest you find a place that has enough space as your apartment will just become a clutter pretty quickly. Also, it's important to stay within budget for the apartment if you want to live the New York lifestyle as going out will become very expensive. Think at least double to triple your budget for going out. A night out will easily cost $100 per person especially if you are going to multiple destinations when taking into account cab fare. I don't suggest you take the subway after certain hours as the trains don't come as often in the evenings. I learned that the hard way in my first month living in New York as I waited 2 hours for the train to come.
