Why dont we see up to speed anymore?? I could watch James all day do up to speed. . . . . . even if im not fond of the vehicle he just has a way to keep a guy hangin on lol. . . . . . MORE POWER BABY!!!! ALL THEM BUFF HORSES from my crazy cousin Karl
Upvote this comment, we need more Up To Speed!
They've already done all the easy picks for subjects for that series. Some of them a couple times. I'd imagine some new ones are in the works and they'll start another run of them when they have a few to put out, but at this point they're kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel of things to talk about that a wide audience will know and care about
Since it all comes directly off the top of James's head we are waiting for the horses inside to juice back up and be buffer than ever in order for more information to be retainable. Once information has been retained the formation process can start, random lightning strikes will occur and lives will be lost... But we will atoeast get another up to speed in due time.
His dad came back. Fought him for Up To Speed and won. Then left with it.

I bet the guys are simultaneously relieved and disappointed when a sponsor says they don't want a funny/creative ad 😂
Were they every really funny though? :/
@@Campus_Stiefel the Valvoline and Keeps ads are pretty good (for ads) 🤣
Also funny that they didn't put a marker for the ad at the bottom of the screen like usual. The sponsor was a total stick in the mud.
Fun add- Jeremiah or James
Boring add - the guy with long hair and Nolan
@@Campus_Stiefel yes.
For those who might be interested, the ship engine has cylinders so large, you can stand in them, with arms stretched out, & NOT touch the sides, yet they are so simple to fix.
I loved hearing it’s a 2-cycle. Like damn I should put that in my weedeater
I mean….something that big with a super complicated engine, would probably scare the companies that oder them. Simple, powerful, reliable, and cheap is what they’re going for.
1:51 "alright so maybe 3 cylinders aren't enough cylinders for you. maybe you're a real cylinder queen" has me dying 💀💀💀
The Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C is not 1828 liters in total, but 1828 liters per cylinder!
The combined displacement is 25578 liters.
I have worked on one of these engines when I was a sailor. Cool stuff.
And the largest 4 Cyl Sure AF isnt in a car - Wartsila 4L20 is 8.8L per cylinder, MAN make similar. This list was a joke
Absolutely insane
Anyone down to try and swap it into a miata?
@@mycosys cry about it
James's idea of turning one into a small house is actually sick, imagine living in an engine, that'd be dope as hell
My grandpa was an engineer on oil tanker ships back in the 60s-80s. I remember seeing a photo of him doing something to a cylinder when they were stuck in the middle of the ocean. He was using a 9inch grinder while he was standing inside the cylinder and there was another 2 guys in the hole aswell haha
yeah they probably had waukesha engines
That pic sure would be cool to show off especially for ur g-pa
What the hell would you be using such an aggressive tool inside of a low tolerance engine cylinder for lmao
@@GlorifiedGremlin lol those ship engine are not low tolerance those mf can take a beating and run the nastiest fuel
@@GlorifiedGremlin they can take a beating and aren’t really low tolerance, but a 9inch grinder is aggressive indeed, but he said they were stuck at sea, and they only have one engine, so u gotta do what u gotta do

They do good work on there ads I watch most and enjoy when company's allow them to make comedy sketches either way got to support
I’d love to discuss all the wonderful 9-cylinder engines with James because it’s also one of my favorite things to talk about
Also another large V12 is the AVDS-1790-5B, used in various tanks including the m60 Patton. It is still currently used in the M88A2 recovery vehicle. The 1790 is because it is 1790ci or 29.3L
If you're counting locomotives you missed biggest inline 6's and 12's. Fairbanks Morse made some massive opposing piston designs
I would've loved to see Napier Deltic engines. Triangle Opposed Piston Engines.
The clearly weren't even counting buses and trucks - then for some reason inc the 96C
They even missed the cat c-18, a 18 liter, 1000 horsepower inline 6 in semi trucks, fire trucks and even in boats.
@@Pretender1147 I agree that would have been awesome to see one of those on the list!
@@timothywood3452 Yup, atleast the DD16 made the cut tho..
man James forgot the W12 and W16 engine
12:40 "but James, that's a marine engine and you've said The Monolist forbid that earlier"
The issue is that production vehicle engines just don’t encompass enough and would be an incredibly short video
But what about bthe Bugatti/Bentley (VAG) W16, that is a production non marine engine
The in-line 5 is also one of my personal favorites. Glad to see another man of good taste
or a V5 honda engine
Best production 18 cylinder was the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp. It was radial piston, air cooled, 2800CID or 47L, built-in supercharger. On the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, the R-2800 also had a Turbine-Supercharger (turbo) that was the size of 2 truck tires.
All of these together can fit in my miata
James needs to pursue the seaplane record... Seems achievable
The Fairbanks Morse 38 8 1/8 two-stroke OP engine is probably the most famous FM engine. In the Defense Industry, that engine powered multiple classes of ships and submarines and is still in service today. FMD also makes the Colt-Pielstick Diesel Engines on several other classes of combat ships.
Detroit tech here. Love seeing this stuff pop on on the channels I watch on CZcams. Have been watching your videos since before I even thought of becoming a tech. And this channel was a big part of my motivation to go to school
Biggest turbos/superchargers? Would be kinda cool.
no wait, the most wipple horse power put to an engine, you got somthing here, there are some engines that have been modified with twin and even triple turbos, or twin supershargers to over clock the engine well beyond its limits, thats what the video could be about, the most over tuned engines
biggest supercharger would be the one on that Wartsila 96C 14 Cylinder 2 stroke
@@vannancoull-barnes4997 Supra RZ with superchargers could be interesting.

I love the energy in this video when he was constantly just slapping the numbers up there! 😂
I worked in the factory where they made those Triumph Rocket engines. It was so much pain to put them in the CNC machine as it was required to put them standing up and they were so heavy.
I did telecom for some of the gold mines in Northern Nevada years and years ago. While I never worked directly with the mining dump trucks, I definitely got to see them up close and personal several times. They were massive. Absolutely mind-blowing massive. Got to walk through one of their dump truck bays one time and saw a guy changing out the oil with a giant 30 gallon drum. lol
What? Was that cool, SlammedZero?
@@purwantiallan5089 Well, I thought so. Was a unique life experience.
This video proves why James is a comedy genius. He made ridiculous engine sizes and orientations way funnier than they should be. Kudos Pumphrey!
Are you actually saying this guy was funny?
@@Inspadave Humor is subjective
I wouldn't call him funny, but definitely entertaining
This James dude is actually such a gem, hoping one time you crumbs come to Melbourne AUS so I can meet this fellow. 10/10 would buy a beer.
with all these engines, you really should be quoting the torque figures too...
some of those old engines are monstrous
James talked about TRAINS, PLANES, and !!!AUTOMOBILES!!! This is the greatest channel ever!
I went to college near a big naval yard and some big warship was being dismantled so they gave the college one of the bilge pumps which was basically a massive 2 cylinder about the size of a caravan. It was so big that you could climb down through the valves on the top and sit on top of the piston inside the cylinder. We used to use it as a smoking shelter when it was raining.
What ended up happening with it? That sounds very fascinating
@@HPsawus I'm not sure, it was just in the yard behind the engineering workshops for the 3 years that I was at the college. I wouldn't be surprised if it's still there but I haven't been past that way in many years
That Three 6 Mafia reference was hilarious cuz it came out of nowhere 🤣 😂 I'm surprised he knew what Three 6 mafia was lol ( there were my favorite group group of rappers growing up& still are...along with project pat & a few other ppl from their label)
For V16, the Caterpillar 3516 could've made it into the list. Quad turbo 69.0L (nice) V16 Diesel engine. It is used on marine and land applications.
2:54 That’s over 29 bottles of 23 ounce Faygo bottles.
As soon as he said Faygo I about flipped, I think James or someone at Donut is a Juggalo. Whoop Whoop!

I'm a naval architect and marine engineer and I've had the chance to see and work with marine low-speed diesel engines. The amount of power they can pull is almost unbelievable, and they're extremely efficient.
@12:52 had me rolling. Gotttemmm!! 😆 🤣 😂
Once UTS comes back, I'd love for them to do an episode on EMD. EMD has such a rich history and has it's ties to the Automotive world too.
1:29 Honda made a 4 cylinder prototype motorcycle at least a decade ago. I think it was even a v-4 but I can't be sure. It didn't break any records (which is probably why it didn't go into production) but they said it rode very smoothly.
For V12s you missed out on the Continental AVDS 1790 that they put in everything from the m60 to the m88A2, aka the tow tanks, they make 1050 Horsepower and an insane 2500 lb/ft of torque in the 8CR variation that I worked on and used and come in at 1790 cu in/ 29.3 Liters of displacement.
this is so weird. just the other day I was looking up the worlds smallest motors. someone developed a motor that can power a wrist watch on a drop of lighter fluid for 2 years. you guys should do smallest engines next!
Just like many others that were missed, Cummins had a 19.0 liter engine for over the road semi's, the KTTA.
hey donut media I've been watching you guys for quite a while and find your videos very entertaining but to my surprise while I was out doing my job delivering food I delivered a bunch of Raymond poke to you guys today there at the inglewood propulsion laboratory you guys were super friendly and even gave me a t-shirt thank you so much you guys are super cool
That Wartsila is also used as a peaker electric power plant in some places. its more efficient than something like a turbine.
Also theres a 25480L version as well
Glad you put the 12 rotor in. I know alot of rotary addicts like myself don't like it because all the rotors are not on the same eccentric shaft but I think it a cool unique design.
I would love a D-list of Plane Engines
My personal favorite of this sort is the 39L H-24 Napier Sabre which put out nearly 3,000 Horsepower in its latest variants
5:41 F-me, I totally thought that 'Donut' logo was a video graphic. It's real. Blew my mind but then I'm pretty high right now.

I had a 2004 vw Passat w8 wagon, I loved the car, but I worked on it more than I drove it. If you ever get to unbolt the exhaust do it. It’s one of the best sounding engines I have heard.
In regards to largest I4 production engines, the vauxhall 30/98 e type had a sidevalve I4 that was 4.5L which was produced in the late teens/early 20s.
John deer makes a 2.9l 3 cylender tractor.
Or cummins bt4 4 cylinder 3.9l and more common

they put 4 of those last ones in aircraft carriers as a backup to the reactors. the specs on those are monstrous
That train engine still blows my mind
The GE90 that's found on the 777 had an industrial generator version that made 90K HP... I love jet engines so much.
Youve gotta be joking the ge90 is absolutely massive thats insane💀
That's a baby. GE makes 500,000+ horsepower gas turbines for large scale electricity production. Just check out the GE 7HA.

Company I used to work for had one truck with a DD16 in it. Absolute savage. It would pull doubles at over 130,000 up grades as fast as regular fleet trucks could pull singles at 80,000.
"The biggest V12 that ever went into production was the Chevy 702"
*Laughs in 44.5L DB 603*
Those ship engines are so big, you can walk through a hatch to access the crank case interior. They’re mind boggling big.
Man, Nolan is getting big!
Since you made different categories for amount and formation of cylinders, you could have also included the V5. There are engines with this configuration, most well known from the Honda Moto GP bikes.
volkswagen also put a bigger VR5 (labeled as a "v5" by vw) in some cars
Even if successfully connected to the supra, the engine is so large and heavy, it would rotate the supra turning it into a pile of scraps

A Lycoming engine that powered bombers? What engine is that?
@@PistonAvatarGuy Tank P38 Bomber.
@@purwantiallan5089 P-38 wasn't a bomber and it didn't have a Lycoming engine. The P-38 was a pursuit aircraft (that's what the 'P' stands for) and it had a liquid-cooled Allison V12.
@@PistonAvatarGuy you're right, I get all dyslexic with that and the Pratt and Whitney wasp major.

It would give the Earth torque steer
@@TimHunold any honda guy can handle that torque steer, piece of cake.
@@johnpeterson4204 wait really 👀
@@tom95001 Well technical yes. They have four. However they usually run on 3 until the load is high enough. All of the vessels that had the 14 cylinder engines installed, have since decomissioned the 4th turbo due to change of speed in the last 10 years. The diameter of the turbine is more like 4 feet, but they are an axial design, so more efficient than regular radial turbos.
@12:50 the "8 Nolans" joke almost made me choke on my drink!
If we're including aircraft engines, the Rolls Royce Merlin was a V-12 with 27 liters. There was also a 47-liter V-12 BMW aircraft engine.
I am in an Auto Tech class and my instructor brought in a series 60 Detroit diesel and I just could not believe how large it was. The turbo was like the size of my head, literally
He missed the mark on that. Caterpillar makes the C-18, an 18 liter engine and Cummins used to make a 19 liter engine. Running with the Cummins KTA was the Caterpillar 3408, an 18 liter V-8 diesel truck engine.
The 3408 has a couple sayings it is known for, "Never late with a 3408" and 'pass everything but a fuel stop."
