I've noticed that all the great guitarist play rhythm and lead equally as well. The big difference I think between them and most of us is that they are able to improvise with the basic concepts whether its lead or rhythm(which includes playing sounds they hear in their head while playing). That's the true skill but it takes practice. Good to see how Kirk approaches it.
Thanks so much yes absolutely look at a guy like Eddie Van Halen 🔥🔥🔥
And the really successful ones sing extremely well with their playing.
BB King? Albert King?
To Aadityakiran: BB King does not sing and play at the same time, and he says so. While the singing is the heart of his story-telling blues style, he admits he's not good at both simultaneously, so he does a claasic call-and-response thing.
Nobody mixed the two - rhythm and lead- like Hendrix, though. That Band of Gypsies stuff is unreal. AND he sang!
I've watched this video about 100 times. Whenever I need a little R&B inspiration, this is what I use.
Awesome!
Mr Fletchers phrasing is smooth as melted butter!! Seems like such a humble guy!! Could listen to him play all day!
Haha! For sure!
WORD
Best thing thats helped me improvise is pick two chords and play back and forth with them giving a good backbone structure to where you can either just play the chord, or play a variation of embelishments/hammer ons & pull offs of said chords, then you can play blues licks in between as long as you still land the bass line notes on time, like with little wing he lays down the foundation with a bass note pattern then adds more variety to and finesse to each one to where he can even stray from the chord and throw licks that correspond to that chord of course, but you dont have to be stuck holding the shape you can easily go down a whole octave for BB king effect real quick then still land your next chord change on time. I can post a for short for dummies example of this if anyone is interested, theres 2 chords shapes i find make it so much easier starting out compared to some chords shapes and the resolution the change makes between them. I far from understand it all im still figuring it out but maybe can help someone trying to get started
Beautiful!!!!!!!!!! One love deep divers keep the vibes high and remember to do something today that you can thank yourself for tomorrow!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Kirk is one of the best Blues players in the world. His feeling, timing and phrasing is second to none.
Even though he has awesome technical skills, Kirk doesn't show-off, he always plays with FEELING and some of the best touch-tone-taste of any guitar player I've ever heard.
Wow I feel like just watching the way he plays these shapes that I already knew unlocked something that broke me out of the box I had been playing in. What an incredible rhythmic and melodic talent Kirk has. Thanks for sharing!!
That is awesome to hear! Thanks for tuning in!
Very happy to see Kirk Fletcher teaching rhythm guitar. For those unaware, Kirk is for sure one of the best rhythm and lead rhythm guitar players alive right now. Rhythm guitar is so important but underrated and Kirk shows us just how good and fun rhythm guitar can be! Not only that but he is an awesome improviser and all around bluesman. If anyone wants to learn more about his playing, Kirk has a book out that shows some of these ideas and more. THanks for bringing him back, Brett.
Sure thing man! We got some great stuff planned with Kirk coming soon!
Thank you so much for your kind words Andre 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
@@BrettPapa I love him
@@kirkfletcher2845 🤯 the GOAT himself.
@@kirkfletcher2845 You and Josh sitting on the couch with those hollowbodies @ Norms still inspires and boggles the mind. Finally got that piece down from guitar player awhile back with all those groovy chord inversions. You da man Kirk!
Definitely would love to see Kirk back, class act is an understatement….amazing guitar player to say the least….his live performances are hypnotic ….👍🏻💪🏻🎸
He will be back soon!
1st time that I'm hearing Kirk... he's got a great sound. I definitely hear that Hendrix influence, but he's also added a little Jazz flavor to it... sounds really nice. And... what a great guy to take the time to break all this down for us.
He is awesome! Thanks for checking out the vid!
Great man
He plays so beautifully and it just sounds like him. So many try this type of thing and just sound like a Hendrix knock off. He just sounds musical and soulful.
Agreed
Some the most melodic and amazing rhythm playing ever! A true master.
Yes Kirk is the man!
What is really cool is that Kirk Really listens to what Bret is asking and sharing before responding...even takes time to digest it on the fretboard instead of just showing "his way". He is not just a great teacher and sharer...he is a learner "on the fly". I always tell new students that I will also be learning from them. Great video.
Thanks Jim. Kirk is the man! Great all around!
Mr Fletcher has some of the most efficient and economical playing I've ever seen. Plays his chords where the leads are. No running all over the neck = smart. Thx Brett
It only took me a few seconds to love the sound here.
Two guitars played by two good musicians sounds like there's nothing missing. There's melody, harmony, rhythm, and groove all stated fully. You could add bass, drums, and vocals, but that's all just icing on a cake that's already tasty.
That would be awesome!
Thank you for stopping him and having him show things slowly… great video!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Kirk is one of the coolest, smoothest players known to mankind. Excellent stuff.
For sure! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾
These two guys together make amazing lessons!!!
That sounded awesome.... ☺️
Thanks for checking it out!
Keep these up with him, I have learned a lot from you guys. Your chemistry is really good. Kirk is laid back and practical. Thanks
Wow, Kirk's style and touch is so nice.
What a beautiful treat. Thank you both! Kirk Fletcher is a gift to the guitar -- and this video, is a gift to us all. Peace, love, and double stops...and staying awake on rhythm! So awesome.
Thanks for sharing so many treasures on your channel.
Much Gratitude
What a wonderful player and teacher!
Yep he is awesome!
Dude I can totally relate to this guy. he makes it pop" keep bringing him back!" There's a lot more being covered than most people would notice ✌😎
This is a such a beautiful thing to see and hear two brothers trade licks and back each other up, compliment each other, and just play! Sounds great guys Brett and Kirt. You brothers be blessed and safe.
Thanks Anthony! Much more with Kirk coming soon!
Kirk is so natural talented. Hes got awesome melodic abilities. love his playing.
Kirk is such a monster player and an incredibly gentle and kind spirit. Thanks for this Brett and Kirk!
Agreed! Thanks for tuning in!
Kirk is an absolute legend and so kind and humble. Love watching him play!
Agreed!
Glad to see Kirk Fletcher back, he is a killer, down to earth player!
Brett thanks for having Kirk .Such a master you guys sounded great.the way you plzy rhythm is kick ass Kirk or anyone you play with is so comfortable just going off!Love this channel!
AWESOME AWESOME! That simple little progression and Mr. Fletcher brought it all together. Very nice!!
Those are two sweet guitars that are singing beautifully!
And playing the simplest things and making them sound sweet is a REAL talent!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks so much 🙏🏾
This stuff is so beautiful to my ears…thank you so much for sharing this.
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
Brett, thank you for giving Kirk the time and the musical space to relax and stretch out so that we got to see what a cool cat and groovy player he really is.
Kirk you are such a legend!!! Never change big brother!!!
Kirk's incredible personal energy just shines through in his playing. So comfortable and right. Quietly confident, laid back and owning the space all at the same time, but in no hurry. Great stuff.
Couldn't agree more!
Spot on!
Kirk Fletcher is a great guitarist. He rarely explains what he's doing, so it's not easy to learn from him (in my opinion). Having someone ask him how he's playing his riffs, is golden.
Thanks for checking it out Jay!
Kirk is such a humble human soul - with a touch and vibe that is amazing. Another inspiring episode… :-)
I usually do not comment videos, but this one was a pure joy to watch, because 1) you both clearly had fun, 2) you know what you are talking about and 3) I learned so much about rhythm guitar. great content!
Man, Kirk is just the best. Such amazing tasteful playing and obviously a kind, humble man. I could watch and learn all day.
For sure! Thanks for watching!
Great. You really hear that as well on Bobby Wommacks guitar part on "I'm In Love" with Wilson PIckett, it's all over that tune.
You’re so right that he often plays rhythm like a drummer might. Or at least with elements that play with the HH in the background. Really loved this.
This is the stuff right here 🔥 Thank you both for being two of the best teachers out there.
What a massive talent!!! He's a natural genius, so relaxed and generous with this music. Brett, don't let this man get too famous that he doesn't have time for exactly what he's doing here. This will keep me coming back again and again.
He is coming back soon for a bunch more stuff!
Thank you.. this was right on time for me. Almost shed a tear as i was finally making the music i wanted to hear. Awesome session man!
That's awesome! Glad you liked it!
What a great video and a very humble lovable guy. You can tell he was raised up right………
Shawn is awesome!
kirk, what a legend!!! so warm
Hi Kirk. You really got the chops dude ! Sounds great.
One of my favorite living guitarists on the planet, and his humbleness, considering his talent, is jaw dropping and inspiring. Really enjoyed this!
Glad you liked it!
I love Kirk Fletcher’s personality and his style of playing. Kirk is familiar with, if the Spirit don’t move, move the Spirit. It is amazing how all music ties together throughout the years. Love Sweet Little Angel’s debut. Life is full of surprises, especially when you are a parent and least expect it. Great video. 👍👏🎸🙏😎✌️
I just keep watching this so often over the past year. Kirk is just such a cool dude. Great vibes from both guys.
Yep he is awesome! One of my favorite guests.
Got the email and came straight here. Thanks Brett for all you do. Love this lesson and love your playing as well.
Awesome! Thanks for stopping by!
Rainy Night in Georgia always puts me in that zone...love playing that tune..Tony Joe White. Also Al Greens guitarist...Teeny (something) Kirk is a treasure of R&B chops and gospel feels....he's a fully grown blues cat...learned the whole journey. My favorite roots blues player ...he should have a million followers on youtube so subscribe to his channel!
Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, y'all.
@@professorhamamoto Thank you...just completely blanked on that one..Al himself played an Ovation I believe on that haunting acoustic ballad Simply Beautiful..my old cover band decades ago played Love and Happiness to open most shows...love that lick and when he stomps on the orange crate to count it in. My idea of a good time.
I corrected it...meant Rainy Night in Georgia...although the other tune is great as well.
Just thinking of rainy nights in Georgia
My dude..... Sounding killer as always Kirk. I am forever in awe of your effortless blues chops.
I loved this. Kirk knows all of the tricks I've ever heard about playing rhythm and makes them work.
Yep for sure!
Bad Ass playing Kirk..." now in time " just killin it bro !! Thanks Brett for these great vids of the Nashville cats and others man, bravo sir !
Sure thing! Thanks for tuning in!
Kirt seems like such a nice down to earth guy. Love his playing and feel. I gotta catch him live someday!
Kirk is awesome! Huge feel!
This lesson is killing me. Love both of you! Kirk is my absolute blues guitar hero and one of the best blues guitarists alive. Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
These two are awesome!!
Thank you, thank you Brett & Kirk!! Having Kirk return to bookend the previously amazing lesson with this even more amazing lesson was a true gift and made my week!
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
I just love how a real pro guitarist breakes the rules and you might not notice unless you're counting, in which case you ain't listening, if you listening and counting you'll get confused because the timming is based on feel rather than counting. Rather learn to play play by the feel of the piece , which does not mean that you don't count but you learn to count loosely rather than strictrly metronome style. This type of counting is as big an art as counting strictly with a metronome. Counting ''loosely'' does not mean you don't keep count but keep time by feel rather than by count. This is likley the harderst tihng to learn.
Wow - the phrasing and just tastyness of Kirk's playing. I need to practice... getting an ounce of that smoothness would make my day
He's the man! More coming soon!
Awesome! Thanks Brett and Kirk.
Sure thing!
