He has my favorite tone out of any sax player especially in a ballade. Cold and warm at the same time

Can't reply directly to jon viol of 3 years ago but I first saw James Carter when he was 21 at The Basement in Sydney. The late Roger Frampton was on piano in the pick up band that backed James. Roger also doubled on sopranino and had it sitting on the top of the piano. James saw it and asked to borrow it. He picked it up and blew the house down with all his pyrotechnics on someone else's previously unseen horn, mouthpiece and reed. He pulled away from the small horn several times because he astonished himself. If most saxophonists tried to play on James' set-up they would be faintly subtoning on full exhalation. So, it's purely James Carter making the sound, not the Lawton.

JC (on tenor) uses an English 'Geoff Lawton ' 11Star BB Special mouthpiece. This has a high intenal baffle with a bullet drop into a large chamber. Its very wide opening and extremely slim side rails is on the limit of mouthpiece design .Handmade with great care and skill. Using a hardish reed JC is creating sounds and pressure waves before the mouthpiece in his upper throat and mouth, positioning his tongue high and forward. Astonishing control and sheer strength. Its the piece making the sound.

The ''growl'' is just that, growl without a sax in your mouth, then put the mouth piece in your mouth and play a note, and growl from the throat as you blow the note, and you will give the note a ''growl'' obviously to get the same result as Mr Carter needs a lot of practice.)

Huh, I honestly thought Tevis was yanking my chain when he claimed JC was playing his horns. I've only seen him play classics and his Mauriats. No matter, he could make a Bundy sing.

+Olubukola Famuyiwa 'Big Bell' - it is a Cannonball saxophone. He is currently sponsored by P. Mauriat, so that is what you will see him play live in 2015. He also has an extensive vintage saxophone collection.

Can anyone help me? How does James Carter make those noises? The noises that almost sound like a grow but they're not quite a grows.

if Bass guitarists can wail on the instrument like a tenor saxophonists your perception as an guitarists will change.

I started with Sonny and Jug, then moved to Dexter and Jaws, then Moody, Zoot, Getz, Tina Brooks and the great Harold Land. I'm not hearing singing notes in this performance. Take it back to Hawk and Prez, and work on a pretty tone. This is really the harshest roadhouse music--reminiscent of Illinois Jacquet at his most honking (he sweetened with age) or Houston Person (compare Etta's recordings with Jug) or Coltrane's 2 most flagrant offenders during his last year and one-half--Pharaoh and Archie--who aided him in emptying houses--Soldiers Field and UW.
