  • In this first of a series introducing the history of the development of Chinese poetry, Laszlo focuses on the two most important works from Pre-Qin China. These were the Classic of Poetry and the Songs of Chu. Though we will not get to the Tang Dynasty in this episode, we’ll look at what came prior and how each new style impacted newer emerging styles of poetry. The life of Qu Yuan will also be introduced.

    I love tang poetry, a beautiful time in Chinese history.

    What does that character mean that looks like a giant Z with a mark on top (之)? It looks like the Japanese word for lawn 芝 (shiba). Not to be confused with the other shiba 柴 meaning brushwood (the shiba inu 柴犬 shiba). I'm not sure how any of this sounds in Chinese but I do know that according to Google Translate, 之 means "of" (zhī). It seems to crop up a lot on old scrolls and stuff. I'm not sure if it plays a big roll in modern Chinese but it's on your Tang Poetry thumbnail. Nowadays they seem to use "de" 的 for of. So what happened to zhī 之?

    • @ChinaHistoryPodcast
      @ChinaHistoryPodcast  Před rokem +1

      Among many definitions, 之 (zhī) is a character you use in between an attribute and the word it is modifying.

    Off topic. But What would be the top 5 or top 10 Greatest emperors/leaders in Chinese History?
    And which ones have books/writings or surviving speeches? I want to learn what I can from them.

    Love this video. Thank you so much!! You give a very nice and brief introduction to the early classical poetry. You are right that poetry and music are integral parts of Chinese political culture. The Book of Songs might be over two thousand years old, but the requirement for composing poems in civil service examination was not abandoned until 1905!! I made a video translating one of the poems from the Book of Songs when explaining what counts as a gentleman or 君子. Here is the link just in case anyone is curious: czcams.com/video/r_IodDwB1cg/video.html
