It’s meaningless for the casual fans and the star players. But for the backups, guys who are just outside of making the team, and fans that want to know more about their favorite team (since the joint practices aren’t televised), the preseason games are meaningful.

Then the regular season kicks off and these guys think they can suddenly turn it on and play four quarters at full speed with no buildup. The result is a bunch of injuries. You know, the kind where a 40-year-old QB sits out the preseason and then tears his Achilles on a routine dropback on play 4 of the first game.

He's going to have to play against Nick Bosa and company in a few weeks no matter what he does. IMO if he goes out there and gets injured in the pre-season, an injury was just inevitable anyway. I think the fact that he hasn't really played more than a few downs of real football in 1.5 years makes the risk/reward skew towards it being better for him to get some actual reps.
