  • Do you have jelly cup gouache like this? amzn.to/3rPqU19
    It's wonderful until it dries out on you. Today I will show you how to revive dried-up jelly gouache and also show you have to make a preventative spray so you will never have to deal with dried jelly gouache again!
    Antifungal Gouache refresher Spray recipe:
    In a spray bottle add
    10 parts water (distilled or boiled and cooled)
    1 part alcohol (normal stuff from the drugstore)
    1 part glycerin (from a health food store or pharmacy) amzn.to/3rPqU19
    The water replaces the water that has evaporated from the paint. the alcohol kills mold and bacteria that may be in your paint. The glycerin helps retain moisture so it won't try out so fast. The glycerin is optional. don't add to much or your paint may become shiny or more translucent.

    I live in Panama so my Himi cups suffer mold more than drying. As it thickens I spray with bottled water and i added a tiny drop of clove bud oil to prevent mold. Works like a dream. Stays moist so far for 3+ weeks of non-use.

    I don't use jelly gouache but I have an airtight gouache palette I've never filled due to worrying about mold. This idea of the spray with a bit of alcohol and glycerine is brilliant! I know some people use clove oil (and I found some the other day in my supplies, I must have bought it for this reason...LOL) but I also love Grapefruit Seed Extract and bet it would work well as an antimicrobial additive too. Clove can be overwhelming to me.

    Thanks for sharing. I recently also brought back my dried out palette back into juicy cups and have fallen back in love with the medium. This gouache sure is a fun medium and I have to admit that the wet juicy palette alone really sparks joy just by looking at it and gives me mojo to paint with it compared with the crusty dry palette it used to be. Nice tip about making a refreshing spray ready on the desk.

    I had to reconstitute my jelly guache last month. I just used water and they started drying out again right away. What I decided to do that really seemed to help a lot was putting a sheet of plastic that I cut out of a plastic bag from the bulk bin area of the supermarket. The paint stays fresher, the palatte doesn't get dirty and I feel like it's easier to snap the latches down. Your recipe sounds great, I'm going to have to try it.

    I've had to do the same thing with my palettes a few times already. I use distilled water (under a buck a gallon at Walmart) and I've never had a mold problem. The company I got my first box from told me the palettes aren't completely air tight on purpose so there is a tiny air flow that prevents mold. It made sense to me at the time. Thanks for sharing. I really should spray mine more often instead of having to reactivate them when I want to play with them, hehe!

    Very good video! I do this fairly often, but I only rehydrate the top of the paint. I don't know if the paint settles out while drying and I'll have weirdness at the bottom ultimately, but I figure the less I rehydrate the less the chance of mold. My method is that I just spritz the pans really generously with water and then go have a snack. By the time I get back I have enough rehydrated paint to do what I want. I don't have to do a bunch of stirring, just dip paint out of the very top. If I need more, I spritz more. My paints probably dry out quicker that way, but I've found drying out the paint also helps with the plastic or chemical odor the Arttx (my kit) has. But yeah, I hope nobody has ever thrown out these jelly gouaches because they've dried out. They do fine when moistened again. On the burnt sienna and yellow ochre, I've found that my Dr. Ph Martin inks of those colors tend to separate and sediment more than my other colors do, so it may just be the nature of the pigments.

  • @WendyColeArt
    @WendyColeArt Před 2 lety

    Great tip. I squirted my tubes into half pans for the convenience but they are really cracked but still usable as you would watercolor. I'll try your method on them. I did something like this with dried nuvo mousses. It worked kind of but could not get them back to a creamyness so I'm just using those to paint with. Those mousses dry out fast especially because I live in Albuquerque, 5000 feet and very arid. I don't recommend them for this climate, there's no real way to keep it from happening. I plan to just make my own pastes from now on just as needed using heavy gel medium and reinkers.

  • @janisvogt1079

    What do you think about just putting a piece of cellophane wrap on top before latching the lid on? It can be reused or replaced pretty inexpensively.

  • @michelefrost734
    @michelefrost734 Před 2 lety

    I'd be inclined to either put plastic wrap over the palette, like I keep over my various pots of Tonic pastes and mousses (Glacier, Embellishment, etc) or store the pots in a different, airtight dollar store Rubbermaid container and just replace the pots in the palettes when I want to use them. I'd probably go the plastic wrap route (who wants two different storage containers for the same product?) because I know it works and it would keep the mixing trays clean. Love your frugal Friday tips!

    I have the 24 colour Himi set. Around 2 months ago I filled half pans with each colour and put them into a small tin so I can use when creating and so it would be easier to move around. I covered the original Himi box with cling wrap before placing the palette and lid on as I didn't like the mess it made either! Then I placed the box into a vacuum seal bag that I have in the kitchen that I would normally freeze food in. I sealed it with the vacuum seal and put it away in my art room. My Dad suggested I try this as air can't get in to dry it out so technically it should stay the same consistency. I will open it up and check on it in another month or two. Unless I need to top up my half pans before then.....

I’ve had all the cups original seal opened almost a year and only used them a little. Because of the tight & well-fitting lid, (they call it their Seal-Tight Box with Box Film) only about half are now beginning to show cracks. But they do offer instructions on reactivating. They say for dried gouache: Take gouache out of the cup and add glycerin and water (equal parts?) until it’s moistened, then “grind” (their term) it into mud and stir evenly. They warn not to add too much water.

    Somebody may have already mentioned this, instead of the alcohol, would clove oil be a possible antibacterial effect?

    Would you use jelly gouache on pieces that you sell? I only ask because we constantly hear about only using light fast pencils on art you sell. You hear it anytime some reviews a more affordable brand of pencils.

      Depends on the colors you use. I'd avoid neons nut gouache should be matted under glass so it will protect it quite a bit. I'd recommend doing a lightfast test and removing the colors from your palette that fade.

    Would you say it'd work if you put each paint into it's own one ounce container with a lid? I ordered the 56 set yesterday and plan on doing that. Sure it won't be nice and neat in the box anymore but I think the paint will not dry out and hopefully not get fungus.

    Ok.... please don't think I'm being negative. This is truly my curiosity. What makes these jelly gouache so special? So many CZcamsrs use them. I get the new unboxing, swatching, ect. But everyone complains about the mess, then dying up over time, I see them and instead of feeling inspired, they just make me think preschool finger paints. Are they really worth all the trouble over having more professional, or even arteza, budget tubes of gouache? Or is it that they got popular and everyone bought them are stuck with them? No.... that can't be because you have so many sets because you love them! You made Plain air pallets with them. What is it that makes these so different? I find myself curious just because everyone seems to love them. You hardly see videos about gouache these days that's not the jelly type. Maybe make a video on that topic? Love you Lindsay! And I trust your opinion!!! Thanks for hearing me out! 🥰

      I can't speak for others but 8 like that I open the lid and all of my colors are ready to go and 9 don't have to fuss with tubes. It's faster and more convienient. It's also a lot cheaper than tube paintband you get more. As far as the paint goes it's seems the same to the stuff in tubes or jars. I recommend buying the format you prefer. I think jelly gouache is really popular because it's less money and kinda fun and novel.

      I think we complain about the mold and drying out issues because everything else about jelly gouache sets is so easy and fun. It seems like minor improvements could be made to make these perfect. They are popular despite the complaints because they are an insane amount of paint per dollar (I picked up a 24 30ml cups set on Amazon for $12.79!). The paint is so easy to use, good pigment/intensity, you can paint straight from the cups if you don’t like watering it down or mixing paints on palettes (I use regular brushes for full intensity paint, and water brushes to get thinner coverage, and can mix on paper so I don’t even use palettes/mixing surfaces). If you keep the paints moist between uses it’s open the lid, have 24 colors ready to go for whatever project size you want, and close it when you’re done. So for busy people it’s easier to fit painting into your schedule. It’s just fun, low stress, low pressure to “not waste expensive paint”… which is really important to newbies, casual hobbiests, and as a fun side project for people who need a break from their “for work/sale/professional” more expensive mediums.
      Unlike finger paints it’s easier to know what consistency you want, it’s going to spread more evenly on the page, the colors still look good when they dry, and there’s a lot less mess. It’s also a lot easier to deal with interruptions because you can just throw the lid on when you need to walk away.
      There’s currently a 24 set (30ml each) that seems a lot like Himi just under a fake name, on sale for $12.79 on Amazon. Maybe give it a try. Search for “generic gouache 24” and it is the first listing under the ones that say “sponsored”. The paint box is a seafoam kind of color and there is a black box next to it in the picture. The box is labeled Spreey but they didn’t use that word in the listing. The box latches nicely, only one of the cup lids was hard to remove, they included a flexible plastic sheet to cover the paints so the inside lid doesn’t get dirty. I’m really impressed with the color saturation (even on thinner applications using water brush pens) and texture of the paint. I could get dry strokes or light watercolor washes easily. It felt easy to control the water/flow even on cheap mixed media paper so it never seemed chalky. Even on areas where I haphazardly layered the final piece dried flat. I had to leave very aggressive thick glops to have a textured raised/bumpy dried piece. It’s just really forgiving.
      Almost perfect.
      Almost idiot proof.
      Until we hit the wall of “we kept this longer than it’s intended use, and we use it more infrequently than it’s intended use, so we have issues of drying out or mold” because this paint was designed for art students who need inexpensive but reliable mediums that they can use up very quickly and very often without breaking their bank account. What I have heard online is these boxes tend to only last an art student maybe a month, and that the mega 50+ cup versions were created in China for art students who perform a three hour painting challenge as an entrance exam for art school and they must all use the same kit. Those kits have lots of convenience colors so they don’t waste time mixing colors. We’re the ones complaining because we’re the ones misusing the product. Himi is aware of this which is why they have started to sell bottles of gouache moisturizer and mold prevention spray on solution to try to ease our problems.

    Lindsey, I have a couple of tips for you. I saw a CZcamsr (I can't remember her name) use a plastic wallet big enough to put the entire palette in and she said that her Himi gouache paints were drying out so much slower since she had used that to keep the palette in. So I bought one of the plastic wallets on Amazon in A4 size which fits my 24 Himi Gouache set with brush compartment, perfectly. I keep my water spray bottle in the wallet with it and I have a reminder on my phone to prompt me to spray my palette every week, just a fine spritz. Which has kept my gouache nice and moist and helps me to remember to use it to paint more often. Here is the link for the best plastic wallets and cheapest ones I've found:
    www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B075K6FVRD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    Also I saw a different CZcamsr (I can't recall her name either) use two drops of clove oil in a small spray bottle of water, which she then sprayed the palette with, the clove oil prevents fungus and bacteria growing on the paint. She said only use up to two drops of the oil because if you use more it can make the paint go funny.
    Here is a link to the place you can get the clove oil:
