People & Nature: The Orchid Man of Bengaluru

In the quaint suburb of Rajajinagar of Bengaluru city is a villa named Orchid House. The house is brimming with hundreds of orchid species from across India and the world. A retired forester tends to these plants tenderly and lovingly, showering his complete attention on these plants with unique flowers and flowering patterns. He is the Orchid Man of Bengaluru.
Kudur Shashidhar Sastry is a former officer from the Indian Forest Service who worked in the state of Nagaland. He has a Master's in Agriculture, a Diploma, and a Doctorate in Forestry. He has vast experience in forest resource inventory, biodiversity, wildlife conservation, and management. He has published more than 25 technical papers on various issues related to forestry, Wildlife and Orchid conservation. He has authored two books, including one on orchids. He has actively participated in multiple forums associated with forestry, wildlife, and biodiversity, as well as institutions for the conservation of flora and fauna, with particular reference to orchids. He is on the Editorial panel for 'Wildlife and Adventure' and "My Forest", a magazine and a journal. His passion is growing and breeding orchids. He is presently President of The Orchid Society of Karnataka. He registered his first hybrid bred and grown 'Vanda Krishna' in 2022. He is
currently engaged in breeding and culturing orchids.
The People & Nature Series by Azim Premji University brings to the forefront interesting stories on flora and fauna from across India and their interplay with humans.
