      @@dawnmaclellan7831 I can remember various Suffolk work horses in my area ( Surry) as a kid. They weren’t nearly as heavy looking as the show horses we see today. The lighter ones looked more like Irish Draft, and I know that it was common to put a Thoroughbred stallion, to Suffolk mares, to produce a top class heavyweight hunter. I suspect that this and the mass sell off of working horses in the sixty’s, as tractors became the norm, all added to the demise of this wonderful breed.

    It’s sad to hear that the French are raising these horses simply to consume them. The mention of the Amish using Percherons was puzzling because here in the USA they almost entirely use Belgians and they end up in the slaughter pipeline all used up and broken down. I have absolutely no respect for the Amish.

    • @jules8299
      @jules8299 Před 23 dny +15

      I have 3 prior Amish horses and they are happy and healthy. My youngest mare came to me as a weanling. The Amish I know love their horses. Yes, there are those who don't care for the horses like they need to be cared for. Non Amish are also capable of horse abuse. There are good and bad within the Amish world and in the English world as well. We currently have a rescue mare who was starved and beaten for years by a man who IS NOT Amish. She is coming along physically but her mental health is another thing. I work with her every day to earn her trust. I have no respect for anyone who abuses horses or any other animal no matter who they are. What about the Big Lick, dressage, horse racing etc...I can bring receipts on the cruelty that these horses endure.
      Nothing the French do surprises me. Let them eat cake.

    • @susantunbridge4612
      @susantunbridge4612 Před 20 dny +2

      The Amish use their horses like machines and they’re not the greatest horsemen by a long shot. They’ve got horses because they have no choice, their religion dictates that they cannot use modern methods of transportation, they must use horses.
      That is not how you find good horse people. And abuse is going to result on a daily basis. Horses are slammed on hard pavement for their entire lives, and being made to run on pavement will result in joint damage from their hooves up to knees, shoulders (shoulder shot) hips and beyond. Then they’re sent to slaughter. That’s the difference. They use dogs in the same machine like way - puppy mills.
      I’ve seen Amish display absolute cluelessness with horses, while the horse has to use its own intelligence to try to understand.
      So spare us the excuses. Using horses the way they do is unkind, unconnected, and tragic.

    • @dshe8637
      @dshe8637 Před 19 dny +3

      I'm a lifelong horse lover, but I don't see much difference between sending horses to slaughter and sending cows, sheep and pigs. They all face the horror there in fear and pain.
      Lots of people call themselves animal lovers, then get pet dogs and cats. Where do they think tinned dog and cat food comes from?

For dog food or big cats, yes, I get that.. but not for Human consumption. I would rather starve.Most of us don't eat dogs and cats any longer. And a horse's physiology is so much different than say a cow or a pig. A horse stresses out more, tosses and thrashes and often they don't d!e as quickly as other animals. There are some grueling videos, it's awful. That's how I feel about it and I'm sticking to it.
