Man, the things we were doing back on the PS3/360. It's pretty amazing just how much they were able to put into the originals while still having the games in a playable state.
God i miss that grey filter with the intense crimson red of the blood. It gave you such a sense of hopelessness, like the world was beyond saving and you were fightning only to survive.
I always thought they removed the grey filter because there's no longer a feeling of hopelessness and despair - they beat the original locust horde and now are now living on a more light and hopeful time. Perhaps the grey filter would make a comeback in the next game when things started to become as they are in the previous games: all out war. But I do miss the grey filters tho, it was one of the main things that made the atmosphere of the old gears games memorable.
Back then when games were more limited by visual fidelity, they "wowed" us with impressive attention to detail, physics, and spectacle. Now that videogame graphics border on photorealism, they can just throw a bunch of high-poly PBR models on screen, slap a million post-processing effects and raytracting over it all, and consider that good enough. Back then they had to actually try.
Yeah thank God indies understood that ! The amount of small things that make worlds feel alive and lived in in indie games that are missing from AAA games is mind-blowing. Just look at Tunic and point me to a AAA game that tries that hard released in the last 5 years. There are some, but I can count them on one hand !
Damn those physics in the old games are really impressive. I've never played the games so when I saw you shoot a statue in 5 I was thinking "damn bet he wasn't expecting the statue to break", then all the walls started breaking in 2 and I just thought "oh". Same with those water ripples, super impressive for the 360.

While it’s not a remaster per say, there exists the backwards compatible versions of Gears 2 and 3. They received a boost to 60 FPS on the Series X/S. I want to say that they’re both operating at a higher resolution too, though I could be wrong.

The old gears just felt creepy. I remember playing gears late at night and running through the science lab being scared of the mutant locusts. It had a dark feeling with all the rain and lack of color. The new games just lack that grit.
The level in the first game where your in a some sort of mansion with a berserker inside and the only way to kill it was to lead it some but you had to shoot and had no idea were it was that mission was scary as fuck
The whole point of Gears 3 was that the locust were stopped and that the world would begin to be rebuilt, hence why Gears 4 and 5 take place in a less "ruined" world
There was 100% zero reason for them to continue in the first place All the lambent/locust were dead Its like shitty Killzone 3 where their home planet got fucking nuked but they still could walk around in star strength radiation without trouble
@@DonVigaDeFierro (GARBAGE OPINION I DO NOT AGREE WITH AS OF 1/18/2021) most people only get gears for the mp anyway. not saying gears 5 weird physics are good, just that i and others personally got because of the mp.
I love 7th gen developer commentary for games like Gears and Halo etc. The creators just had this understanding of game development that seemed almost second nature to them. No frills, no hyperbole, no melodrama.
So, when it comes to what made Gears 5 flop, there was a couple key things. 1. Nobody likes the battlepass that isn't like 6 2. This was the first game to actually do a bad job at Horde Mode 3. It lacked any real atmosphere in every way 4. The Campaign characters were bland as hell 5. No matter how you look at it, Kait was an arrogent asshat the entire game with no real weight to her story, and had a hell of a lot of missed potential. 6. They clearly didn't decide for Kait to be it until the last second of story design, given her story is like a really shitty version of Luke Skywalkers. 7. Del and JD were clearly cast aside to make room for ms "this isn't about you, its about me" 8. The entire story felt really forced, even more so than the Sequel Trilogy for StarWars.
All correct points, just played Gears 5 up to Act 3 and the only moment I remember from that entire ordeal was the first couple missions where you play as unnamed COG soldiers and where you fight in the middle of that one street later in the game. My main issue is the proportions of the characters and the sounds, you just feel weightless in Gears 5. The proportions in GOW 1, while unrealistic, made your character look like a tank which made it all the more satisfying to slam into walls for cover. The sounds were absolutely amazing in the 1st game as well. You just don't have that in Gears 5 now.

it seems like a lot of new games are just relying on having pretty particle effects and good lighting and they slack on everything else including sound design
Because that's all they need to put on the trailer and the box at the store to get you to buy. Once you bought it, they don't really care if it's great or not
well thankfully Nvidia allows you to change how the game looks, aesthetically. I gave G5 more gray, earthy and darker colors. Looks nearly in-line with the first 3 games
The sound design part is the worst because alot of people can't quite pick up on why it's not as pleasing auditorily, and the sound effects more of less just sound like "sound effects"
Sound design for Gears 5 with Atmos is top notch, if you don't have Atmos then you can't talk shit on it (because it's one of the best sounding games I've ever heard) I agree on everything else though
I absolutely despise how colorful games have gotten now. Why does every modern war game depict war as some fun adventure with your friends? Industry is not comprised of the same people that it used to be.
Remember that time when Marcus and Dom went into a giant worm and cut all of its hearts out and if you weren't quick enough you'd drown in a sea of blood? Man, Gears 2 was something else!
Man I really miss the location-based gibs of Gears 1 and 2. They were removed from Gears 3 (I can only guess for performance reasons) and for some reason they just never added it back despite stronger hardware being available for consoles. Remember when we could identify bones and organs in Gears 1 and 2? Now it's just nondescript chunks of red fruit.

Basic, logical design, how could nobody who made the game figure out that this doesn't sound right?
in gears 4 and 5 the graphics are too bright/vivid and thats Easily the biggest problem by far cuz its Impossible to feel the gears vibe it feels more like call of duty than gears. the first 3 games had dark graphics (and the settings/environment in 3 werent as dark as 1 and 2 since most of it took place outside but the graphics were still dark)
It such an obvious case of "Let's remove most of the blood and violence that the series was built on so that we can appeal to a wider audience. Then lets remove the detail because hard work is hard."
Nothing pisses me off more than despawning gore and blood decals in an FPS. Rooms that were once filled with idle enemies now torn asunder, the gore, the destroyed environment objects, and bullet decals/smoke shaders show the players's impact in the world and give them a sense of progression. Take those things away and it makes it feel like you're just going from room to room killing NPCs.
That water at the end is pretty crazy. I remember Digital Foundry and others using that opening scene as a talking point for how good the game looks in 5. The quality of the orginal trilogy holds up so well. I hope they finally let Cliffy have 1 more chance since he's been so vocal recently.

Gears 5 is NOT a remake of Gears 2 and therefore one scene in Gears 2 should not be compared to a completely different one in Gears 5 as though they are the same scene. They aren't the same scene. In the Gears 5 footage they are in a place called Settlement 2 which is being invaded by the Swarm. In Gears 2 they are in a place called Ilima City, Ilima hasn't just been invaded though, it looks worlds apart from the scenario in Gears 5 because it is worlds apart. Notice how trees and mountains are visible in Gears 5's Settlement 2, now notice how they aren't visible in Gears 2's Ilima. Why would that be you ask? Because Gears 5 lacks immersion? No, because Ilima City in Gears 2 was entirely caved in by a giant beast known as a Riftworm. But you'd know this if you'd played the games. Besides, Settlement 2 does eventually become a color muted flame filled hellscape as can be seen in this scene here czcams.com/video/zD5PdGd2gG0/video.html

After binge playing the entire saga this video gained even more weight, the series is going through the exact same problem as Halo, original developers (in this case epic games) after doing an amazing job left either by contract or because they wanted to move on to other projects but the series they worked on became so important they (Xbox studios/Microsoft) had to continue the franchise especially as an system seller, but they end up missing the entire point that made the originals so memorable, i mean heck the coalition seriously thought Kait was such an amazing character that she could carry the other half of the campaign? this is why western gaming companies are dying
Epic are an evil company it was cliffy B who made the gears games good as for 4 and 5 the kids grew up in a time of peace which is why it isn't as dark ahd gritty as the originals, now if gears 6 still lacks that feeling then it's for sure over.
Gears of War OG was such a dark game with a heavy atmosphere. I rememember how terrified i was when Marcus was screaming *wretcheeeeeees* for the first time in the campaign, lmao
Krill sections always felt like Pitch Black I know that was their intention. The scariest parts for me were an of the Elite guards towards the end with Torque bows especially on Insane. Also flashbacks to the final boss and pulling off 50+ perfect reload headshots without dying was true terror.
Of course it does, it would be a joke of an engine if it couldn't do basic stuff like this. Unfortunately the devs were a joke this time and didn't understand how to do proper visual and audio design for combat.
DaBa wish more games were like war thunder not gameplay wise just the way they manage to design the game perfectly for its theme and the sound engine they made just for that game
A lot of gears fan are saying that Gears of War 2 needs a remake, but I strongly disagree because when the game first released, the attention to detail was well spot on, because back then, developers really cared about the work that they put in when making this masterpiece.
Am I missing something? I though Cliff only worked on the first trilogy? He never touched the newest titles. Looking at GoW 5, I don't see Cliff name on it.
Because people complained that the older Gears games were too brown even though they weren't so the new devs went so far in the opposite direction and just made everything colorful.
Ryamus gears 3 managed to have colour without looking as colourful as fortnite. The older games had much more grit to them. In characters, colours and story. The fact the protagonists in the new trilogy are literally referred to as ‘children’ makes it feel more like a high school game rather than the desperation of the originals.
Ive play gears since gears 2 and this video accurately represents how this game has fallen not only in detail but in story telling and actual gameplay and he hasn't even said a word. I'd kill to get back a Gears 3 style Gears, where the campaign hit us in the feels and made us think, with great story telling and character writing. Everyone loved when Gears made you feel like a badass while playing alongside badass characters. Now it feels like I'm playing a soap opera with forced deaths to try and make you feel something. When Oscar got murdered in 5 I didn't even bat an eye, Its like they tried to recapture Dom's death which for this franchise now is like capturing lightning in a bottle. I think its time to let this franchise die. Thanks for reading this comment..
gaming is not what it used to be... the gaming we knew and loved is dead and gone. which reminds me of captain price's quote "the world you knew is gone how far are you willing to go to bring it back".
Something I noticed about playing older games often is just how much better the physics and lighting often were in those games. Rippling water, destructible environments, lighting that cast shadows-these are things you'd frankly be surprised to find in a modern game but were basically just the norm back then. The hyper-focus on graphics and pretty environments came at the cost of literally everything else.
The scaled back blood and guts of Gears 5 is just one of the many reasons why I hated this game. As a long time Gears fan, I wanted to like this game. I really did. It's the first Gears game I've played where I actually had to force myself to keep playing the campaign. The dialogue and the story was just so damn boring and I would lose interest after only playing 20 minutes and wanted to play another game. I didn't even have this issue with Judgment. I actually had to stop myself from getting to far ahead in the campaign so I could savor the campaign for a few days instead of doing it all in one sitting. Gears truly has lost that dark, gritty atmosphere. I would not be upset if they never came out with Gears 6.
@@codemonkeys3914 this was literally how every game use to be with blood. Ever since the 2010's, it's been hard to find gory games anymore, at least the ones where the blood stays indefinitely. Thats the basic shitty business model.. Cut down expenses (so decreasing expensive development time and work by cutting all the cool details from the game they consider unnecessary) and expand and increase interest.. EA and UBI$OFT are the companies that follow this disgusting business model the most I guess, but obviously more companies are following as it looks like money is everything these days
It's strange that way back on the Xbox 360 you had better physics, breakable environmental pieces, and blood detail. Yet here we are with a more powerful console, and higher resolution screens and we get less. At this point those things that were ground breaking details back then should be pretty standard now and better.
The thing is, instead of pushing much further draw distances, better AI, better physics, etc, companies are busy making shiny graphics and very high resolutions which eat all the resources out of a console's graphical power. The PS4 Pro and One X could have vast improvements from their base versions but instead all we get is a shitty resolution bump. GTA V & Fallout suffer from the same syndrome.
@@Manic_Panic In a game like this what importance is more draw distance? There is none. Better AI, sure talk to the guys responsible for that, not the art team or graphical programmers. And Gears of War always had braindead AI, you've fallen victim to another one of Crowbcat's nitpicks. Better physics, redundant considering the game's design isn't based around the use of physics they'd probably focus less on that if they would rather have much better graphics instead.
@elgigante2001 Higher the resolution, the more detail you can see, the more detail you will miss if it isn't there. Trade off? Less physics for higher detail and just too lazy and cheap to add the physics.

The old gears just felt creepy. I remember playing gears late at night and running through the science lab being scared of the mutant locusts. It had a dark feeling with all the rain and lack of color. The new games just lack that grit.
Well they were the first locust who ironically were human
It was great am i right
Don't forget about that Mad World trailer.
The level in the first game where your in a some sort of mansion with a berserker inside and the only way to kill it was to lead it some but you had to shoot and had no idea were it was that mission was scary as fuck
The whole point of Gears 3 was that the locust were stopped and that the world would begin to be rebuilt, hence why Gears 4 and 5 take place in a less "ruined" world
It bugs me that in gears 1-3, when you gibbed someone, you could see organs and bone, but in 5, ITS FUCKING RED JELLO
Pro tip: only play the trilogy of gears and don’t continue
There was 100% zero reason for them to continue in the first place
All the lambent/locust were dead
Its like shitty Killzone 3 where their home planet got fucking nuked but they still could walk around in star strength radiation without trouble

So, when it comes to what made Gears 5 flop, there was a couple key things.
1. Nobody likes the battlepass that isn't like 6
2. This was the first game to actually do a bad job at Horde Mode
3. It lacked any real atmosphere in every way
4. The Campaign characters were bland as hell
5. No matter how you look at it, Kait was an arrogent asshat the entire game with no real weight to her story, and had a hell of a lot of missed potential.
6. They clearly didn't decide for Kait to be it until the last second of story design, given her story is like a really shitty version of Luke Skywalkers.
7. Del and JD were clearly cast aside to make room for ms "this isn't about you, its about me"
You just don't have that in Gears 5 now.

well thankfully Nvidia allows you to change how the game looks, aesthetically. I gave G5 more gray, earthy and darker colors. Looks nearly in-line with the first 3 games

The hyper-focus on graphics and pretty environments came at the cost of literally everything else.
The scaled back blood and guts of Gears 5 is just one of the many reasons why I hated this game. As a long time Gears fan, I wanted to like this game. I really did. It's the first Gears game I've played where I actually had to force myself to keep playing the campaign. It's easy to mock Cliffy B now but goddamn he knew what he was doing with Gears of War.
Lawbreakers wasn't even a bad game.
The dude is an idiot at doing anything that isn't directly involved with Development, if only he knew how to not open his mouth like a dumbass his studio might still be alive and well.
It was an edgier time back then. That wouldn't work well today
He did? or was it the people working for him?
It was the mixtapes he pumped in his lambo.
Gears 1 is legendary. Never anything else like, using the gnasher was an art form
We don't talk about gears games past 3, bc that's where the series ended, just like with fallout nv & 3
"Weight and Intensity" DLC coming soon...
Lmao
I would love it...
"Pride and Accomplishment" DLC was cancelled due to incompatibility with the Xbox brand
I thought of doing a W40K mod but it wouldn´t have weight and intensity
That would be a next level of salvage money recollection... 😅😂
"Welcome to 2019 where more is less and less is more!"

Corporate Commander: MUAHAHAHAHAHA, FUCK YOU, CONSUMER MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
@@NotEvenDeathCanSaveU i know right ,i saw the far cray 2 vs 5 days ago from this channel , pathetic ....really pathetic.
Even TrackMania 2 suffers from this.
The truth is that Gears of war has nothing to offer nowadays
You know you messed up when CHAINSAWING AN ALIEN SOLDIER IN HALF is accused of lacking weight and intensity
Locust came from underground their own planet because their fuel source called emulsion created them
BOO YAH LORE DESTROYED
It's going more towards rendering higher resolutions. Which I think is more important than statues that break at specifically where you shot it lol
@elgigante2001
Higher the resolution, the more detail you can see, the more detail you will miss if it isn't there. Trade off? Less physics for higher detail and just too lazy and cheap to add the physics.
@@jackerdor Xbox drone, or corporate shill. Take your pick.
I remember gears actually being kinda unnerving. It’s brutality and bleakness were kinda horror-vibe inducing
Act 2 in Gears 5 has a chapter that is like that; slightly horror-like and unnerving. But this video does show how the previous games were definitely better in some ways.
@@RicoSeattle Yea but they were more grey, dark, and gritty. Now, the theme for these next gen games are all vibrancy and brightness.
@@OhRaez I definitely agree. Although more so Gears 1 was like that; Gears 3 (while a great and fun game) started to get away from that stuff as well unfortunately.
@@RicoSeattle Yup. As every sequel tends to be; the older it grows, the more distant from it's origin. Like a tree.
Yeah Gears 1 and 2 were bleak as fuck. Chainsaw bayonetting locust was like insanely intense
2 years later and this is still one of your best videos. It came right at a time I was scared nobody noticed this shit anymore.
