You’re 100% correct on every word you spoke Brian. I was almost exactly in your shoes, I worked a full time job 70 hours a week went to school got my cdl’s. Saved money while working bought my dump truck, worked on it on my only day off till it was good shape. Then a pintle hitch 27’ trailer, then a 580K 4x4 backhoe, worked on it & done a few side jobs. Then saved more bought a dozer almost just like yours, a TD8G. While doing side jobs & working full time I bought a Tri-axle log truck. Now I’ve got a iron in every fire, I absolutely love your videos. True definition of a working man is what your are.

Husband hasn't left his heavy equipment diesel mechanic job yet, but he's got the tri-axle, the hitch and trailer, and the truck is paying for itself, working part time. Next up is a dozer. Thanks for the tech info, the financial info, and for the inspiration. Continued Blessings to you and your family!

I guess I was fortunate, the night I brought my truck home I had $3.00 to my name, no down payment and nothing lined up for work. I didn't even really want it. It made me $113,000.00 the first year. I payed everything on credit for 4 months. I had a CPA do my paper work plus taxes for $25.00 a month.

Being in business has its highs and lows and watching the cash flow go up and down can be stressful. I even got a full time job for a while back it the beginning to make ends meet till I could back on my feet. Nothing but a rollercoaster so be prepared, develop that determination or else. I agree with this video. I’ll be retiring in 3yrs from driving with ups and I’m looking for something to supplement my income. I been working for so many companies from every aspect of trucking. I’ve done pneumatic tankers, dump trucks, flat bed before working with ups for the last 18+ years presently. I live in Pennsylvania known as the keystone state where dump trucks haul a lot of gravel and sand from New Jersey. So we have a lot of quarry’s in both states. I was told by a friend who’s a dump truck driver if you can get a contract with a quarry you definitely can get a dump truck. That’s what I was told. But overall I believe doing anything in life that you’re passionate about “it’s better to try an fail, then fail to try.” Being passionate is definitely veery important cuz any obstacles you face you won’t let it stop you cuz you believe in yourself and your business. I truly look forward to doing my own thing so I’m humble to get any sound advice from any one who’s domes something and has become successful at doing it. Thanks for the video even though it’s a year old 😀

What’s up brotha, I need your help and advise, I have a 2006 peterbilt 379 sleeper that I use to run Miami to New York for 2 years with a Reefer and the transmission went bad in Maryland. My Mechinic fixed it and change the clutch and after it was all done I noticed that the numbers dropped by 50% on the loads. So I decided to put the truck away and go back to working for someone. Which I don’t like, I moved from New York to Florida because I became a single dad and now I’m looking to get into the dump truck business but I don’t know where to start. My peterbilt is just sitting in a warehouse not moving. So my question is.
1• should I sell my truck or trade it in for a dump truck
2• how do I make the most out of having a dump truck
3• are there brokers for dump trucks like over the road?
4• what’s better dump truck or dump trailer we’re I can still use my peterbilt?
My apologies for all the questions but I don’t want my peterbilt to go to waste before I sell it after I did a lot of work. Please email me your answer brotha. Abt.enterprise@yahoo.com thank you in advance.

I'm from the state of Oklahoma I am a dump truck driver. Been driving dump trucks for 9 years. Now how you started out I agree with but there's another way that people start their own dump truck business that's just a solo dump truck. You got to find a company to lease on to and then you can pay 80 to $90 an hour for your dump truck. Are some of the companies have fuel cards.
And that helps a lot to get started out. Then you can run under their authority. To me if you ain't got a whole lot of money that's the best way to start. Yeah I'm done again but you got to make it for a couple of weeks because some of them hold back two weeks or hold back 4 weeks and then pay you every two weeks or every month. Then they deduct this fuel cost from your pay. Then the more money that builds up you have to build up a maintenance fund to fix and repair anything on your trucks

    • @thisismagacountry1318

What do you mean pay $80 or 90 an hour for your truck?
Pay the driver 80 an hour?
Or get 80 an hour from the company you lease under?

My most expensive insurance on one of my trucks is the one I do belly dump, side dump, and lowboy with and it's $5,000,000 coverage with full coverage on truck and trailer for $283.00 per month or $2,437.00 per year. Good info for guys looking to jump in on the big trucks, but the single axle trucks up to 33k seem to make me the most money. Operating cost is pretty cheap, insurance isn’t near as much, plenty of decent used stuff, they fit where the big ones don’t, can run more loads in a day since it drives close to a pickup and homeowners/contractors want small quantities of stuff that would be too much for them to haul, it keeps making money in the winter being able to salt parking lots.

@@thisismagacountry1318 I’m in with supply yards for aggregate and other materials, usually if they’re booked on delivery they call me to help hauling. Quarry’s are a good place to start.
Excavation contractors are good to talk to, they usually need a fair amount of waste took out or fill brought in but don’t usually have a truck of that size and sometimes won’t need a tandem.
I’ve been called to plow state roads when short staffed, but mostly I find guys who are plowing commercial properties and sub the salt off them. They either don’t want to or don’t have the means to salt the lots.
I’ve since added another 33k truck with a hooklift, it stays pretty busy, quite a few contractors are interested in concrete bins and 25yrd dumpsters, still functions like a regular dump truck so I’ve picked up out of the quarry after I empty a dumpster quite a few times. Now I’m more willing to run asphalt for county/city projects with a dumpster, so that works okay.

Well I made it half way through. I bought my 1st in 1984 with no experience. Have 3 truck and 2 water trucks, 15 pieces of heavy equipment. Some of what he says is right and some is wrong. I'm in Utah and pay about 1200 a year for full coverage insurance per year. Most people who become owner operator will go broke within couple years. They don't hustle enough, don't work hard enough, don't buy right truck for there app. Everyone can make it when economy is booming like now, try to make it in a recession. I watch guys that think there going to get rich and when crash hits they mess it up for us that are in it for a lifetime.

Why don't you advertise your business on this video. I read in a comment that you are in Washington. I would put at least a location and maybe a phone number. Question: if I need a couple loads of washed 3/4 minus should I just get it from the gravel company or can you make me happier. The last driver I had couldn't spread it and dumped a foot deep, at the beginning of the spread, for me to spread by hand later. Going down the driveway he went forward downhill instead of backing down. Guys used to be good at it but another delivery seemed to be coated in dirt and once delivered I didn't notice until it was dropped. I was so mad because if I wanted clay I would have dug some out of my yard.

My cover letter to them stated that I am wanting to run a dump truck, but I would be happy starting as a loader operator, gaining to the company’s trust that I won’t wreak their equipment, and then eventually move up into to truck. One company called me, and put me in a truck right away, I love it. Saving now to buy my own.
