    Awesome! So glad that you are able to ride and feel the wind on your face! Several years ago I stopped just off the interstate in Guthrie, Oklahoma at a restaurant called Braums(main claim is great ice cream and shakes to go with the food). I was finishing my meal and watching a guy in a wheel chair roll up to a early Can Am trike. As I watched, he proceeded to get himself on the trike, pull the chair, remove the wheels and secured them on one side, folded the chair to fit the other side(I can't remember if he had the side bags), started that baby and was on his way. I was impressed! What I'm getting to is whether you ever thought of trying to use a more collapsable chair to fit behind you, or if that would even work. Plus, you wouldn't be able to fit a passenger. Well, just thinking out loud. Glad you're still riding!!

    Nice side by side comparison. 👍🏻 subbing. I too also have been ridding many years. Had a pretty big stroke a few years back which robbed me of my ability to balance, so 2 wheels is not an option anymore. I probably could ride but my wife isn’t up for it. Which I don’t blame her, I don’t know that I would be up for it either, riding alone, maybe but not with a ridder on back. I survived the stroke VERY well. I drive for a living and I do about 23 to 270 miles a day. I have gotten safe driver awards every year and I have many hours of Smith training. Don’t own a Spyder yet but I think I’ll be getting one for this next season. It gets pretty cold here in Illinois in the winter and I didn’t ride in the winter in the past anyway. Great video, subbing. Keep your head on a swivel and stay safe!!

    Thanks for sharing your experiences. I too am a para but am lower with an L1 incomplete injury so balance is not as much of an issue. I have had a 2014 Spyder RT-S since last summer and it is great to be back in the saddle again after many years of riding. I too wish they would lean but that's a small sacrifice to make.

      T-6 injury here so without trunk muscles, balance becomes an issue. Back rest does help a lot to compensate lack of trunk. I feel more stable in turns on the GoldWing.

    Arcimoto now owns Tilting Motorworks which made leaning front ends for motorcycles. They made conversion kits to turn a two wheeler into a reverse trike. It allowed the trike to stand upright on its own, to auto adjust to the self-balancing upright position at 5 MPH or slower, and meant you didn't have to plant your feet on the ground as soon as you came to a stop. Arcimoto makes the FUV (Fun Utility Vehicle) which is basically a trike with an open air roll cage. Various door options exist. The riders have to use two overlapping safety belts to strap in to prevent them from falling out on turns. It should be much easier for you to mount it as it is set more at normal sitting height for a chair. Not sure if that makes sense. I don't have one but I have seen loads of their videos.
    One other type of leaning trike you may like is the Carver One. It is fully enclosed. The front portion / cabin leans into the turns while the two rear wheels and motor remain vertical. Interior is very much like a normal motorcycle. It carries two people in tandem. They also make a cargo variation of it. There are gasoline and electric versions of the Carver leaning trike.
    There are also specially made trikes for wheelchair users that allow you to roll into the rear of the trike, lock your chair down, you don't have to get off the wheelchair, and then the rest of the vehicle is more like a traditional trike. There is also the tank chair but I believe that is geared more for trails, off road adventures, the beach, etc.

    Do you have more of a 2 wheel feeling riding the Goldwing? Love the video Mr Dains. Thank you for your service. I rode bikes for many years before beoming a T-8 para. The backrest for Spyders are excellent imo. I understand the issues of not counter steering and leaning but would like to know if you get a more motorcycle feeling (even if it's going straight) with the Goldwing? Most able body people don't understand what I'm asking. If anyone is reading this I would like to hear anyone's opinion who's disabled and have ridden both. Thanks to all and stay safe.

    • @neemafastcat
      @neemafastcat  Před 2 lety +3

      Driving the Spyder is a lot like riding an ATV down the road. That is what it feels like because you have those two wheels out in front of you that are so visible and so receptive to a quick turn of the handlebars. Whereas the Gold Wing being a normal trike, you do see the normal looking front end so you think of yourself as being on a normal two wheeler, until you come to a turn and realize that you cannot take the turn at the same speed as a leaning two wheeler, then reality hits that you are on a trike.

    I have a question. So do you just keep an extra wheelchair in the trailer at all times? Because I'm just wondering how it would be to try to put that away once you're on the bike. I'm kind of in the same situation as you I'm missing my right leg so I can't use the brake on a motorcycle or on the Can-Am. Great video though. Very informative

    • @neemafastcat
      @neemafastcat  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, I haul the wheelchair in the trailer and I do not load or unload it myself. You will see many guys that outfit a bracket on the bike because they want to be independent when they ride. In my case, I rarely ride alone plus I wanted to have a trailer with me. Since I wanted to tow a trailer anyway, it only makes sense to use the trailer for hauling the wheelchair too. I will be making a brace like a bicycle rack, that I can put in the hitch mount so that I can hang the wheelchair and tires on the bike rack. But even then, I will use an AbleBody to place it on the rack. If you look on youtube, you will find many other options for the rack that allows you to ride independently.

    • @neemafastcat
      @neemafastcat  Před 2 měsíci

      At the time of this video, that reverse trike was from Tilting Motor Works, but has now been sold and re-branded. The problem with Tilting Motor Works is that you have to turn off the bike and the balancing system off after you are done riding. When you do this, you have to put the bike on the kickstand and a crip like me is not able to do that. Bike has a chance of falling the other way when you turn that TMW off. If TMW could make it so the bike is balanced (stiff) when turned off, I would have done TMW. That was not an option.

    Hey bro, I am late to this video and u prob know about this but, as far as leaning, u should look into a company called tilting motor works. That is exactly what they do to a motorcycle. It leans.

    • @neemafastcat
      @neemafastcat  Před 2 lety +1

      You are right about Tilting Motor Works and I looked at them, the problem with TMW is when you turn that system to OFF when you are done riding, the bike is no longer balancing and you must lean it over onto the kickstand gently. That is the part I could not do. There was even a chance it would fall the other direction. If the default position of TMW when OFF was stiff, and straight up and down, I would have have one because I really want a leaning bike. TMW told me the system has to be powered off or it will drain the battery.

      Hey Matt, tough to do a price comparison really. If you want to compare new prices, there are so many optional Spyder models to pick from. Some CanAm Ryder three wheelers are as low as about $10,000 new, then the full dressed electric shift Spyder RT LTD like in the video cost about $27,000 new. As for the Gold Wing, it is only sold new from Honda as a two-wheeler, so if you bought an Gold Wing DCT (automatic), you could expect to pay $25,000 to - $27,000 then have to pay another $15,000 for the trike kit like you see on this one. Both machines are readily available in the "used" market world so you would have many to select from. Keep in mind that Honda Gold Wing DCT did not start till 2018. Many guys out there still buy shifting models and add an air shifter. Hope this helped you have a better idea of costs. No matter which one you shop for, I would say that you have to spend at least $15,000 for a decent used bike.

    • @neemafastcat
      @neemafastcat  Před 3 lety

      The problem with Tilting Motor Works is that you have to turn off the bike and the balancing system. When you do this, you have to put the bike on the kickstand and a wheeler is not able to do that. Bike has a chance of falling the other way when you turn that TMW off. If TMW could make it so the bike is balanced (stiff) when turned off, I would have done TMW. That was not an option.

    • @neemafastcat
      @neemafastcat  Před 3 měsíci

      Right, and that was my first choice because I wanted a leaning bike for turns. The problem with that bike comes when you are done riding. The balancing system has to be turned off and the bike then leaned over onto the kickstand. That is the part I could not do as it is a very heavy bike. Also, to much chance of the bike laying over the wrong way once I turn off system. If that bike would default to balanced, that is a good option.

      Instead of buying a DCT then adding the Trike kit, I think I would try to find a DCT already converted. If you purchase the DCT without conversion, then pay for the conversion, I think it will cost you more money.
