In the future, the polar ice caps have melted, submerging Earth in water. Humanity survives on floating communities called atolls, constantly threatened by the Smokers, a gang led by the ruthless Deacon. The Mariner, a drifter with gills and webbed feet, arrives at an atoll to trade dirt. Suspicious of his mutations, the atoll residents imprison him. The Mariner meets Helen and her ward, Enola, who has a tattoo believed to be a map to Dryland. When the Smokers attack the atoll to capture Enola, Helen frees the Mariner, and they escape together. Reluctantly, the Mariner agrees to help them find Dryland, and they set off across the ocean. Tensions rise between the Mariner and Helen, but they slowly grow to trust each other. The Mariner’s survival skills prove invaluable as they evade the relentless Smokers. The Deacon believes Enola’s tattoo holds the key to Dryland and pursues them tirelessly. After several harrowing encounters, the Mariner, Helen, and Enola are captured. Enola is taken to the Deacon's fortress. Desperate to save her, the Mariner and Helen stage a daring rescue. In a climactic battle, the Mariner defeats the Deacon and deciphers Enola’s tattoo, confirming it as a map to Dryland. Following the map, they reach Dryland-a lush paradise untouched by the ocean. For the first time, they experience the beauty of solid ground and abundant life. However, the Mariner realizes his place is on the sea. He bids farewell to Helen and Enola, leaving them to build a new life on Dryland. As he sails away, the Mariner leaves behind a legacy of courage, hope, and the enduring spirit of humanity in a world transformed by water.
