Everyone talking about having 28,000 gold pieces, and Gertz only has a shortsword
Before watching the video: I really hope, with so much money floating around, he will have at least a shield in the end.^^
48:05 players trick DM into eating Crisps of Petrification. +1800 XP
Cheeze-Its? more like Freeze-Its.
Cackling
38:40: "I don't think this is going to be four hours of D&D"
*video length: 3h 59m 52s*
He's not wrong.
I absolutely love the parallel between the knights reaction to Bhaltair's 'useless' studying of the stone, and Bhaltair's reaction to the 'useless' ceremony of the nobility. They both think 'sure whatever, Mr crazy person'
"I dont think this is going to be 4 hours of d&d"
*looks at video length*
Sure Matt, Sure.
Well technically....
To our blessing, he is never correct in his approximation of time.
well to be fair some of it wasnt actually dnd, but yeah i love that theres always more than we are promised.
whauw you're so cool
My longest session is 52hours
Gertz was not kidding about being the quiet one of the group :P
I love this because as much as I enjoy Crit role (which is a lot). They are all professional actors so they are purposefully creating drama I feel and it doesn’t always seem like my home game. But this feels so homey like im sitting down experiencing the game as well. I feel like an Audience player just sitting back and taking in the story which is fun. Thanks Matt and players!
"Deer, now available in Unpunched Food packets."
That whole exchange over a "punched" deer carcass was hilarious.
All hail Bholtair the Deer-Puncher! All hail Sigurd, the rogue SO stealthy he hides his plans even from his fellow party! All hail Anna, she who bathes in blood! All hail Vorrakus, the battle master who survived the horrors of the Underdark to earn his freedom. #TheRevenantVow
Honestly, Vorrakus is a cool character. Has a really nice backstory.
You can not give all hail to everyone! You have to split it. A quarter-hail Bholtair, a quarter-hail Sigurd and so on.
I really like the part where Anna is bathing in blood, not Hnossa...
that deer punch scene needs to be animated lol
I love the 8bit characters next to each of the player's names
They are from "A selection of mini adventure figures" By artist Sebastiaan Van Hijfte
They are sprites from a great game called Legend of Dungeon 4 player coop roguelike dungeon hack and slash
I love Gertz! So glad when he got to participate. Party on Dwuman
Best time for the camera to froze xD
Like, the best face you could be xD
Thats amazingly good timing XD like, yeah just wow
They fixed the camera and resumed at 57:30
I have to be honest with the many dnd shows on CZcams and Twitch right now I love the fact that this one especially in the beginning felt more like how my friends and I casually bumble along in our game
I honestly hate the bumbling. It's awkward, slow, lars seems completely disinterested, and if it wasn't for the great interactions with Matt I don't think I'd still be watching
@@vaderciya K. Gd 4 u.
@@MrSeals1000 You seem a bit salty for a 3 year old comment reply, but you do you m8.
@@vaderciya Just wanted to check if there'd been any growth in that time. Got my anwser though, have a nice day
@@MrSeals1000 so, you checked for "growth" by being passive aggressive? You're always going to get the same response to what you wrote.
You could've asked if my opinion changed or if I thought the show improved, if you were actually "checking for growth". To which I would've answered, that I stopped watching after a couple episodes, as the disinterested bumbling was unfun to watch. Even though I like Matt Colville as a DM, I didn't enjoy how this started, and stopped watching.
I just have to say how much I love the overlay in this vid. Adventure was my favorite Atari 2600 game as a kid and when I realized that Matt used it as his youtube banner, I loved him even more. Been consuming all the vids here in anticipation of running a game or two....having never really played. Wish me luck!
I absolutely love how you use the squire here. You've got the nobility making their demands in fancy-speak, and then this highly relatable squire who has to act as the middleman and make sure things are understood.
All hail Lady Sariel
One day, the one true ruler of this realm shall arise! Lady Sariel seems like such a badass, I can't wait to see more of her as this story plays out.
Hail!
The once and future queen.
46:40 : "The stars... are not in position for this tribute!"
"Like he says. Stars. Cant do it. Not today."
My thoughts exactly when I heard that 🤣
The amount of people rolling garbage cans/mop buckets by the window in the beginning is hysterical. It's like "oh gotta mop over here" (45 seconds late) "oh nope gotta go mop over here"
Best possible freeze frame for when your camera stops!
OnTrac nearly ruined our company by not delivering like 75% of our shipments in an effort to renegotiate our contract
I love how nonchalant Anna is on the whole drinking and bathing your hands in blood.
Latecomer here, just finally started watching Matt's campaign diary (playlist) after having heard him reference it so dang much. And before this, the more "railroady" session with Gertz was actually pretty dang good, and in line with what I personally expect from a D&D game session (just with a bit more openness for players to point the game in what direction it goes).
This session may just be a bad example... I didn't think they were actually playing for the first hour and a half, just talking _about_ playing, like an exceedingly long setup and bookkeeping (stuff I, as player or DM, prefer to have done before meeting up to play). And then Lars being the stereotypical paranoid player who is so afraid of something bad happening to his fictional character that he's a roadblock to the DM and the game itself (having bad stuff happen to your character can actually be half the fun). But Lars isn't that much of a problem, really, I think the problem is that this group is missing a player with higher energy/drive, what I often think of as the leader. In the groups I've played in, that does often wind up being me or one of my close friends -- we are very active players with plans and suspicions and needs, and so we're always doing something, even if that something is just paving the way for other players to take the spotlight.
For what it's worth, I thought Anna had moments of being the group leader... at least the potential of it.
I love each of Matt's NPC, they each have such life to them.
Watching this after finishing the Chain and I think some of the comments describing Lars as a problem player are hilarious. His demeanor can be abrasive but it is not intentional, and he is not a bad guy.
Very, very good RP narrative summary by Gertz! starting at 2:26:00
Fun gam to watch.
However, did anyone else notice that Vorracus, the soldier, never geared up. A clearer description of him physically might have clued the other players into the fact that he was was armed only with a short sword stuck in his belt. No pack. No food. No money pouch and no money to put in one. No gear at all. Only peasants clothing. Maybe wearing beat up hide armor that he stole from a dead orc.
DMs. Keep an eye out for this sort of thing in your own games.
I hope somebody in the party gears this guy up. Guess I’ll be watching the rest of the eps to find out.
I only just started watching you campaign diaries. I LOVE the pixel art versions of their characters!
First impressions... A surprisingly physical, non-magical party build: monk-heavy, no spell-casters, no healer.
Ballsy.
I love it
They're joining with 3 more people from his other group. I think they'll be getting a warlock at least.
Just a warlock? That's the only caster?
You need a lot of short rests to get the best use of a Warlock, not always possible in game, nor do they have the same versatility / utility of a Wizard, Sorcerer, Bard, or Druid.
Healing potions aren't a replacement for a cleric, or even a bard or druid that get many of the same healing / restoring spells, and Rangers only get the lesser spells of healing and restoration and few spell slots.
Lack of magical support / utility, buffs, debuffs, healing, restoration makes it easy to kill the whole party vs. the right combination of enemies throwing nasty spell effects.
+Nero Wolfe though I'm a big Druid fan, I love non optimized groups. It makes for good ingenuity and planning
I think the Hnossa has a few levels in cleric but yeah I agree with you. It will make for some fun moments where they have to think up an insane solution because they don't have access to some spell. But they won't have any shorting of ass whooping power.
That look at 1:28:57 after mentioning the rose :D
Well played, sir!
Matt, watched it all live..really good stuff. Tons of questions, hope you have your Q and A today!
I love these videos! Thanks for sharing your game with us!
“Yeah I’m not seeing what the downside is to worshipping this blood dude...”
hahahaha Anna is great
Anna is awesome. Would be honored to have a player like her in any campaign.
Great job setting this up, look forward to seeing your adventure!
I died at 1:12:00 when he said "...indeed, well we have some.. *UN*punched food if you would like to try it." XD
Actually set my alarm, so I would wake up to watch this, this morning :) Was fun to watch!
49:02 the freeze mid cheez-it bite had me in fucking TEARS
1:54:57 was the best moment of the stream IMO. In between Matt's epic re entrance and Hnossa's midnight butcher trip, it was pretty epic.
Thank you to Matt and all the party for sharing their game, characters, world, and story with us!
I love rewatching this after watching the chain. I am consuming as much D&D material as I can and have begun rewatching everything!!
Love Matt and his channel, but some of these roleplaying moments reminds me of the "dumb guards" scene in Holy Grail. Matt, your patience is epic! Love your channel.
Bizarrely I approve of these session times. If I get up at 5am I can catch the stream. I listened to the second half on the bus to work whilst drawing my imagined version of the Mul character :)
I just want to say thank you so much to you and your players for sharing the experience with us. I've watched pretty much all of your videos and I'm so excited to see how the campaign progresses. No need to compare yourselves to Critical Role. I think your campaign/adventures have their own merits. Definitely looking forward to more, though on CZcams vs. Twitch as I'm on the East coast. Also, no complaints about length, other than that I want more!
Great session, it's nice to see that I GM very much the same way. And that you share alot of the same issues as I do with conveying story/plot/player vs character interactions. Again, great game and thanks for sharing.
“Life is uncertain. Eat your dessert first.” Lmao.
I will be sharing this with my players when I run my next game as I explain the world and my game to them.
Yay Jerry! Thank you for your continued work!
This was lots of fun. Thank you and your friends for choosing to share this with us!
Matt, I seriously have the same problem with my party when it comes to them keeping track of their own freaking treasure. Frustrates me to no end haha.
I don't think it was so much them not keeping track as it was them not having counted out the total yes. But if you have a problem with your players not noting things down just start enforcing the rule that if its not noted down it is missplaced. Especially if your players are experienced. They should whip them into shape lightning fast. ;)
I love that Matt's camera freezes on him eating a cheez-it
lol, how lars is certain you just want to ruin his plans ^^
"I punch it" and "I feel blessed to have your rock Sigurd"... Those made my day. Thank you.
Love the little legend of dungeon portraits XD
Thats the craziest party composition I have ever seen with two monks, a fighter, and a barbarian. I hope they have a large stock of healing potions. :)
How much money do you have?
Uhhhh like alot...
Yeah how much?
Um well we had some before and now more soooo...
Yeah. How. Much. Gold. Do you have?
Hearing Matt say "fuck" makes me tingly. Like sweet forbidden candy; dark yet alluring, like watching strangers make love from a hiding spot.
This is my opinion but it looks like Lars has the "hide as much as possible from the DM cause he is the enemy" complex which is super annoying and ultimately pointless... It just make the DM job's harder which makes it less enjoyable for the players
I'm about to become DM and i dearly hope this doesn't happen! Is there anything the DM can do to fix that misguidance?
Lumpyrox - Yes. The short version is, talk to your players about your intentions and theirs, and what GMing is to you. If you've been watching Colville and other good GMs, your explanation for what you are about should help them to not feel the need to keep secrets.
Me personally, I tell my players that if you hide anything from me that I feel would need GM approval (you have a son, you're a double agent, you used to be a demon, etc.) then it is far less likely to work, and far less likely to be true.
Example - If you tell me you used to be a demon at session 0, I'll figure out what that means. I'll invest time into it and almost definitely build a plot hook around it. You'll be part of this cool, collaborative thing and probably get some personalized treasure.
However, if you spring on the party during session 12 that you used to be a demon... well, your character is probably delusional.
Which can *also* be fun to play :)
CorwinC73 Sure, but if that's not what the player intended, but the DM and other players keep saying is happening... then it would be super annoying for that player.
nope some people just cant help but project their insecurities into their style of play. the person has to change on their own. id say have a session zero where you talk to your players about what you expect from them and what they should expect from you.
Degreaser and lemon juice removes India ink fairly well when combined with copious scrubbing.
Thought it would be helpful to post the notes he tweeted out before the stream for those who want to see.

Jake Cassar Thanks buddy.
No longer available :(
Matt looks absolutely adorbs in the freeze-frame.
I'm really enjoying this live play, but I just noticed you stopped after a few. :[
Depressing but understandable. Thanks for all the time and work everyone put into these!
What time does Gertz start playing his character?
Right around 2:17:00
:(
“Well, father always said it would end up this way so...”
GOLD! Solid gold D&D!
Poor Gertz they went 2:16:00 before he got to be introduced to the party :(
Thank you for the timestamp, good sir!
I saw Thomas and Lars emote, "Oh man, black rose sounds familiar..."
Hngggg props are such an awesome touch!
I feel like it would be really helpful to see how you do a session 1/session 0. If you could stream one of those, that might be particularly helpful.
Totally got distracted by the fact everybody but Lars is wearing black. I guess he is the leader character, although I do not know why he would not tell you what he was doing.
+++ Blood Storage Idea +++
Use the bag of holding as a blood bank, or find a Wizard that will make your weapons draw blood from slain opponents and store it in a pocket dimension only you can access.
Man, Lars didn't react at all to the letter-writing props! I felt so bad for Matt, I know how sad I'd feel if someone didn't care at all after I put in so much effort :(
I know I'm catching up but the players never seem to search for treasure or valuables in rooms before moving on. They also didn't loot the mage Tazes shop with all the minor magic stuff laying around. So weird since storage isn't a problem. It's great to watch.
Surge-on. What has been heard cannot be unheard. (Sir John)
Thundarr's sword IS the SUN SWORD (literally it's name), if you watch the show.
Just watching it for the first time and at 46 minutes in, I'm pretty sure Matt is describing orbs of the moon and moongates.
Awesome job, I feel inspired by your session reminds me of the ones we hand with another american DM. I like how you got the players involved with the world. I learned a lot from this session. I really have trouble coming up with names, do you have any suggestion I will steal some from you but some of my players / future players may watch your channel.
Keep up the good work!
Orlane? Now that's a town name I haven't heard in a long, long time.
These is just great.
I wonder if Gertz ever geared up after his solo adventure 'cause the dude just had a short sword before and *NOTHING ELSE*
Gertz has such a bad ass character
Matt @38:30 "I don't think this is gonna be.... it's not gonna be 4 hours of D&D." XD
Someone totally saved a screenshot of Matt mid-eating when the camera froze, right? 49:00
ok I dont have audio for this.....anyone else experiencing the same thing?
where does this take place in the timeline in regards to the events from Campaign diaries 3-7?
Thank you for the video :)
43:18 Even in D&D teenagers have no filter XD
Matt, where did you get the parchment and seal? Cool props. would love to add to my campaigns.
Lars OMG, say something!?!
This gets better if you watch with the Two Steps From Hell discography playing quietly in the background.
I don't know if anyone asked this already, but... what's that paper you were using/ Do you ahve a link, or an idea wher ei can find it? That's awesome and I love having awesome props for people
This is great! The only thing I can suggest is that your voice Matt is a bit loud compared to the others. If you just turned down your microphone just a little or up the volume of the player characters it would be amazing.
+Matthew Colville - Do you still ahve hte info on that printer paper?
Haha "Shoot the arrow at me and I'll throw it" xD Only then does Ultra Instinct kick in, lol
So I had found some basic rules that I was able to print off. I’m trying to start up a D&D campaign, I was wondering where you able to get the barbarian character and monk character classes? Also what book suggestions would you say are good to have when first starting?
Both classes are in the players handbook, to start off you would need the players handbook, the dungeon masters guide, and the monster Manuel
And here I was thinking I had nothing to do today!
I can't wait to see these stronghold rules you've came up with
tork1988 Still waiting :(
Is there a place that you have your special building rules posted? I really like the idea of the various classes having access to special buildings. (Monasteries, Guild Halls, Wizards Towers, etc)
I think it's in the DMG, no?
There are rules for building fortifications / businesses, yes. However his version (which i found a few samples of after searching reddit) adds special abilities based on your class and/or which building you make. On the subreddit, there is a PDF floating around that shows his Monastery rules, which gives the monk followers and some other cool game mechanic abilities. I think there is also a comment of his that hints at what the "guild hall" gives Sigurd.
Cool. Let's hope he posts it somewhere.
he has said before he may put it up on DMs guild.
Where are the rules for building keeps and stuff? I have looked around, and I can't find any. Or is it homebrew? And if it is, what do you (any of you) do?
Adam Sloan Matt has his own Stronghold rules, he'll do a Kickstarter for it early next year.
I know it's a little late, if you are looking for a stopgap measure before that dungeons and dragons had a 3.5 book about it called the Stronghold Builder's Guide. I don't play 5e so I dont know how to convert it but it mostly concerns gold and stuff so I think it should be fine. If you search for it a little, it's very accessible
After freeze they start back up at 57:37
hey Matt, can you include the document you give to your players about this session?
Can someone please tell me where to find the rules for strongholds? Pleeease
