What a delight to meet this guy. I've seen Paul McCartney countless times and wondered who this guitarist was, who could bring back that Beatle sound so modestly and perfectly and always looked like he was enjoying every second on stage.
What I love about Joe’s interviews is that he asks pertinent questions and listens to each answer so that we can listen to them without interruption. Wonderful work.
Steam.... Thank you! Joe
Joe is the real deal!
That is so true. There's nothing worse than not letting the interview subject finish his full answer or not asking the obvious follow-up question. So many great eyewitness stories aren't put on the record because the interviewer wants to make it a conversation instead of an interview.. Joe strikes the perfect balance exceptionally well.
Excellent interview and interviewer. I dearly love hearing the stories of how musicians got to be where they are in the grand scheme of things. It's like an epic jigsaw puzzle of who's who in the music business. Thanks to all involved in puting this puzzle piece together ✌️😊
Dan Hill That’s an excellent analogy. 🧩 😀
I like that guy. Zero ego, a fount of information, and a thoroughly likable demeanor. That's the kind of musician you want to hear from.
Good guy.
He’s a great fit for Mecca’s band. He’s got feel, technical expertise and is steeped in all forms of popular music from the 50s onwards.
*macca
macca . No he was in a Mecca band, Mecca was a chain of UK cabaret rooms and nightclubs. He was rubbish with McCartney. :-)
Loved the performance with the band on the Ed Sullivan Theater marquis over the sidewalk in 2009. And as the cameras panned the big crowd on the street below, almost no one was holding a cellphone aloft!
Every one of Joe's interviews is so calm and casual! We rarely get to see these legendary musicians so relaxed, unguarded, and full of compelling stories and information. You are a much-appreciated treasure, Joe.
Very very kind Scott .... Makes my day... Joe
Fascinating interview Joe. Brian’s another talented and humble musician. Keep up the good work. These videos are an important part of our musical history.
Thank you Sparkman.... Joe
Would have liked some discussion about Brian's bass guitar choices.. Great channel/interviews!
Yes, he doesn't exude that "hey, look at ME....I'M a rockstar" !! attitude.
I'm sure his bandmates are of a similar nature.
Being in the right place at the right time, and not being afraid to do what you do...my hats off to Brian, and Joe.
Great stuff! Thank you
Thanks Tm.... Joe
One of the greatest interviews i've ever seen in a long time. It's like having a good time sharing with a friend in the living of your house, totally relaxed and comfortable..... Personally I did not know much about Brian's life and how he met Paul McCartney. Thanks for sharing this video. Greetings from Santiago, Chile.
Hi 46.... very happy you enjoyed it... Best, Joe
I wasn't familiar with Brian Ray, but he seems like a really nice guy, and you like for good things to happen for a guy like that...
Wow..the Monster Mash guitarist. I am even more impressed with him now. He is outstanding with McCartney and that was enough to hook me into this video
Gloria was the first song i learned......very interesting conversation..especially the yesterday/blackbird/ intonation moment...
Thanks Rambo... yes... the greatest guitar vocal ballad was out of tune!!! Who knew!! Obviously no one picked up on it or cared because it was so masterfully done in every way. Best...Joe
Great interview....I wished he'd mentioned that he co-wrote the Smokey Robinson hit "One Heartbeat" back in the 80's. I know because I sang the original demo for Brian and his writing partner, Steve LaGassick.
Wow... we were born in the same year with the same music influences. And our band played Gloria, as well. Brian is a great guitar player and stage performer.
Brian is excellent, love how he really nails his role with Paul , Brain seems to have a real bond with Paul
I saw Paul in L.A. at Staples Center back in '09 or so and always wanted to know more about his two axe-welding bandmates. thanks. that was great. a lovely guy, and a great musician.
Can you imagine being in Paul McCartney's band? Surreal for 20 years Brian!
Brian is so talented and such a good Guy. Cheers to Mr. RAY!!
Joe is the best musical interviewer Ive ever seen. He knows just what us gtr geeks would ask and what us fans want to know.
thanks Timothy..... I am a proud geek too:) Thanks for watching and supporting our channel....Best......Joe
Great interview! Brian Ray brought back so many fond memories! I remember when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan. I was in a local folk group, but, immediately fell in love with the Beatles. At age 72, I’m still in love with Paul! Lol! What an amazing life this guy has led! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Patricia... I feel the same way hearing these stories. Best...Joe
We saw Brain Ray in Portland in 2016 and an unforgettable show. I was on Brian's side so I watched him a lot. Loved him swinging his guitar around, loved him playing bass on "New," he did all the right stuff and had a great attitude. Brian, like each member of Paul's band, deliver in just the right way. Great interview as well, respectful and relevant questions.
Thanks Augie... Best.... Joe
I love this channel! Never heard an interview with the mysterious Brian Ray before. Imagine playing bass for McCartney! Great story!
Thanks Sy..... Best, Joe
Joe, as a lifelong Beatles/Macca fan, I very much enjoyed your interview with Brian! I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more! Thank you!
Thanks Mainecom. ... I hope you enjoy some of the other interviews too. Thanks also for subscribing.. Best, Joe
A gentleman.---A VERY good musician as well.---I saw him with Paul back in 2002.
Great interview❗️👍
Wonderful musician and obviously a fine human being. Saw him when McCarthey played Philly. I love that he credits his late sister so much. She was very special. Look up Jean Ray if you appreciate folk or are a fan of Neil Young. She was the Cowgirl In The Sand.
Such a good interview and what a nice guy Brian is ! Thanks for posting
Thank you! What a great interview! Sorry it ended!
As a lifelong member of the Church of Beatles, I thoroughly enjoyed that interview. I loved Brian's comment "he's the best Paul McCartney in the world". LOL! A poke at all the conspiracy theorists. Great interview as always Joe.
911.... thank you very much.So glad you understood he was poking fun. So many responded like he was agreeing that there are others!!!! Best..Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Yeah like, 'there may have been others but this one is clearly the best!' In a way this has a double meaning as they are a lot really good tribute bands out there and there are some really great imitations of Paul in his earlier years some are amazing acting lookalikes and some are truly great musicians in their own right Some manage to do a pretty spectacular job at combining those things. But I'd agree with Joe. The real Paul is so much is own man someone he's created as he's going along by being essentially true to himself, THAT is anything is a big part of his 'secret' - and his charm. The fact he's still with, honestly, I think we've got Linda to thank for that fro feeding right and encouraging him when he really needed someone to believe in him so he could start believing in himself again back in 1970-71 So, Linda, belated but heartfelt, thanks.
I love your "Les Pool", Brian!
Very interesting interview...again. Such a talent.
Really enjoyed this interview, thanks and great job!!
This is amazing! Such gems in Brian’s stories. Thank you!
Thanks for this, Joe. As always - excellent!
Thank you Frank...( my middle name) Best, Joe(Frank)
What a great heartwarming interview. Both fed off of each others questions and answers and it gave a real perspective of how a young man made a decision to begin a career. Thank You!
He just seems like a really nice guy.
Great interview. Brian is fantastic in the band, and adds so much to Paul's songs. One of the best shows that I've seen live.
Another amazing interview!!
thanks bear...... Joe
What a great interview. I watched the Beatles debut on the Sullivan show so many years ago. This took me back.
Brian is an out and out Superstar on guitar!. Paul really hit the bullseye when Brian joined him !!.
Wow. I've never heard the story on how he (or the rest of the band) got possibly the ultimate musician's dream gig of playing in McCartney's band. I would like to hear the other band member's stories as well. One thing for sure, somehow Paul ended up with musicians that are very close to perfect for the job. I also can see that Brian May has the congenial personality and intelligence for the job, no matter how good the musician a major factor is being able to get along with each other and in this case a star of immense importance.
got to play with Macca as I auditioned for Wings, chose 3 drummers out of 40. Lovely cool guy. I had my camera but took none. hohum at least I was there.
@@timreeves7059 Did you meet Joe Engish?
@@ebookpioneers I remember Joe English. He played drums for Wings foe a while. I thought he was really good. 😊
@@danhill9952 Yeah, I thought he was too. I think he had to quit the drums because of arthritis or something.
@@timreeves7059 For real?? That’s awesome :)
What a cool story and all the information you shared with us all! Thank you so very much and am just floored with this video and think time to go watch it again and absorb it all!! Awesome Brian and thank you for your stories and all of your musical talent!! Lucky Etta! 😁
Totally enjoyable interview... the host does not interrupt, asks the right questions, is well informed... Brian is exactly the class act he appears to be.... being another one of those kids that watched Ed Sullivan that night, I know exactly what he means when he speaks of our generation. Most of us players have one guitar we'd never part with. Thank you so much for this post.
Thanks Set... Joe
Very nice interview, reminded me to the Bob Harris interviews from the old grey whistle test.
Great interview as always Joe. 😇
Thank you again Bill… Joe
Well, hush my mouth! There really was a band called, "The Crypt Kicker 5"!?
When Paul did the 'walk this way' joke on the way to the stage, it must have inspired confidence in his nervous bandmates. If Paul isn't worried, then he must think we're ready!
The bass to guitar change-up on "Golden Slumbers" reminds me of the band 'Gentle Giant', who often transitioned from acoustic to electric during a song.
Great interview with an interesting guy. Thanks, Joe!
You (Brian) played the gold top LP for years....You played it with Etta for a long time. I saw you play with her twice around 1981-1982. Once at SFSU, and then at a small venue in Mill Valley, Sweetwater. I spoke with Brian briefly after the Mill Valley show, and it was crystal clear that he loved playing along with Etta. Man....her version of "Take it to the Limit" was raw and powerful. We're losing great talent to the heavens in record numbers. Blessings to you all.
What an interesting interview, i've never heard of Brian but what an amazing story. Looks like i've found something to keep me entertained if West Australia goes into lockdown.
Very enjoyable! Thank you, gentlemen!
Thank you too Michael, best Joe
Thank you JOE for this channel... I love it

Him and Abe very visual performers love to see them and Paul of course.
Two modest gentlemen & super informative !
Another great interview, Joe. The back stories behind form all your guests, given your questions, tell us moe about the artists and their musicians than could ever otherwise be known. Thanks for sharing all this...
Thanks again for watching Robert...Joe
You are a great interviewer, Joe! You asked really good questions and give them time to respond without interrupting. Brian seems like a very cool down to earth guy.
Sawlon..... Thank you very much. Best.... Joe
Great interview. Thank you.

I have been a fan for years your enthusiastic down to earth style of interviewing and asking the questions I would ask has drawn me to you . I will ask you to remember your fans and we want you around for years to come. With that in mind please stay healthy you are a genuine part of rock and roll and we do not want to lose you due to health we are here for you.
Great interview. Brian's obviously a very humble (and super talented) guy. I have imagined many times in my life just what it would be like to play one song with Paul. Brian is definitely getting the opportunity to live out a childhood dream of many of us. I'm super happy for him. AJ
Well deserved!!🙌🙌
Saw the clip for "How Paul McCartney chooses his guitarist". Excellent interview with a real pro.
Brian sounds like a very likeable person and very patient. I'm sure people ask him all the time stuff abou Paul.
Hi Rene... you’re correct. I’m very sensitive to musicians who are associated with extremely well known artist as so often the interviewer goes straight to how’s so and so like they themselves didn’t exist. As for Brian I truly wanted to know how he got to be the musician he is and yes... how did you get to be the guitarist with Paul
McCartney but I waited until the point in the interview that it was the next question in order of his career. He’s had a great career before Paul and that’s how he ended up with Paul. He earned it. Thanks again for watching our channel and for your thoughts and comments.... Best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I had the chance to see Paul's band live he is an amazing musician. I reallly enjoy the channel. It is helping to get through mandatory isolation period.
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Hi Joe, I noticed that pacing. Allowing the story to unfold as it should. Thanks for the great work.
Great interview
Great interview brother.
Yeah class on 1955, I’m born in September
Brian is such a great guy and really talented musician.
Great interview Joe, was a treat! Brian is really a super talent and deserves lots of accolades to his skills. And he's a funny guy too! I was hoping beyond hope that he'd get asked about Paul's long absent Rickenbacker that he hasn't played live in decades, but no matter. Thank you for doing this!
Thanks Kevin. Best, Joe
Such a great interview. Brian has had an amazing career and seems humble for a man of such talent.
Thanks for watching Chuck... joe
WOWOW!! Incredible, exciting story! Have seen Brian Ray with Paul McCartney many times. Last time was Desert Trip both weekends!!! Love this.
Thanks for watching Janice....Joe
Fantastic musician and super cool dude...👍🏻🎼👍🏻
This guy's experience in getting the McCartney gig was nuts.
You want nuts? Rusty said he had a dream as a kid that Paul came to his door and asked him to join his band and decades later it actually happened.
Great interview like all your others I have seen Joe. Glad to have found your channel. Happy spring and stay safe!
Thanks Ryan... you stay safe out there too... hopefully this flu thing will be over soon! Best.....Joe
Thx for being so honest Brian! Your amazing talent and California spirit got you there! I learned some grt bass licks from maca!
Hey everyone, Brian Ray should be in the RR Hall of Fame!!!
Great Interview. 2 Gentlemen.
Love the interview. Rock on 🎸
Thanks Rock.... Joe
What a great interview. It appears Brian Ray could have sit and tell interesting stories all day. He looked like he enjoyed the interview as much as Joe did.
Hi Jim.... I hope he enjoyed it half as much as I did! Thanks for watching.... Joe

Another great interview Joe. Its interesting how Brain happen to be in the right place and time. I was born in 1955, what a trip..
Thanks Joe.
Hi Bodiji... Glad you enjoyed it... Best, Joe
I was thrilled to hear the backstory on Bobby "Boris" Pickett- I love the band name mentioned in Monster Mash: " with his group, the Crypt Kicker 5". So, now I know Phil was behind it! Love it.
Great interview with Brian... I learned from this video that the Oakland show on April 1, 2002 was their first concert performance, and I was there in the 22nd row! It was my first McCartney show, and I've seen him 5 times since, but they sounded like they'd been playing together for years. BTW, my tickets were $600 each that night, worth every penny!
Great interview, learned a lot about the guitarist I’ve seen so many times on stage with Paul.
Thanks Vince.... best, Joe

Another great interview!
thanks Astronomer... Joe
Brian, we love all that nerd info!
I was at that concert on April 1, 2002 in Oakland California at the Colosseum. I had an emotional experience. Seriously. I was in tears. Beatle Music Fanatic. I sure wish I could play the guitar like you Brian. Got sidetracked when I was younger. Sad. But I pretty much all play Beatles songs my acoustic. I love you brother/Steve
Brian Ray and the rest of the band Paul has had the past several years are spot on! I saw them in So. Cal and they are nothing short of extraordinary.
Just SPECTACULAR!!!
Great interview.
Thanks Michael….Joe
A lovely interview and insight into playing the greatest music on earth. Brian comes across as a passionate and sincere guy. Is he really 65?? Looks amazing!
