    This recipe has a 152F (67C) mash, a 90-minute boil, and it reaches an original gravity of 1.100 (24 °Plato).
    Dark roast malts are fun to brew with. Since they don't require mashing, you have some flexibility with how and when you add them. These malts can be added after the mash or you can even make an extract by soaking the grains in water and adding that extract directly to the kettle. Reducing the length of time in hot water can provide a smoother, less robust flavor. I've tried all these ways and still prefer the traditional mash method with the grains added for the entire mash period.
    Do you have any tips for brewing stouts? What's your preferred method?

    Another great video. Absolutely love the straight to the point videos. Too many long drug out videos out there with a lot of bad filler clips.

    Gotta love the camera that you use to film! I'm not a brewer (yet), but when I saw the title (YT's recommended video) "Imperial Stout" my eyes lit up and saw your awesome video! You a chemist/chemical engineer by any chance? Your setup's dope man! Hope I can swing by down there at Orange Co! Hats-off and much respect to ya from here in the Bay Area!

      Thanks so much, Arjon🙌🍻 I’m a mechanical engineer by day, but there’s definitely some chemistry involved with brewing. I’m looking forward to this stout. I made a few tweaks to my normal recipe so we’ll see how it turns out in a few weeks🍻

      @danielshields4458 Před 2 lety

      @@ryanmichaelcarter I agree with Luke. Personally, I'd like to hear more about the reasoning behind your recipe design choices. It's always helpful to understand what you're hoping to get out of each ingredient, whether or not you achieved that in the final beer, and what changes you might make to dial in the recipe. Looking forward to seeing more of your content!

    Amazing and inspiring. I am currently a small batch coffee roaster in florida. Looking to learn about beer brewing/ making. Any suggestions on where to start? Equipment? Education? Thanks

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před 2 lety

      Hey Wesley, that’s awesome man! A cheap and easy way to get started is a basic brewing kit. You can get one from MoreBeer.com. These are often “extract” kits that skip the “mash” step but will allow you to learn the basics. A great beginner book is “How to brew” by John Palmer and a great online resource is beerandbrewing.com

  • @anemlachhomebrewing3690

    Vids are great, cheers for sharing them... have you tried to adjust this recipe to a 30 min boil? Most modern malts are fine to do this, would reduce the pre-boil volume needed. Really looking forward to watching more of your content🍻

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před 2 lety

      Thanks so much! I really appreciate it🙏 I do a 90 minute on this recipe, but the shortest boil I’ve ever tried on any beer is a 60 min

    Man every time I see your hot break it makes me nervous in that little 10g kettle. Killer system tho.
    Cool that you use a DO meter. Do you ever measure the DO before you add o2? Wonder what the baseline is. Any other good uses of the DO meter? DO in the mash? DO before and after the DH? DO in the serving keg? It would be fun to see all those.

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před rokem

      Yea DO before O2 is about 2-3ppm. After adding O2 is really the only time I use the meter

    I have the same filter, I’m having trouble with it clogging, any tips?

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před rokem +1

      Hey Chris, the filter works great as is, but if I’m doing large hop additions (3+ oz/85g+), I’ll use a hop spider in the kettle. Also, if using any whole leaf hops, I’d do the same. It also helps to do a good whirlpool before knocking out so that most of the hop/trub stays in the kettle

    @jimdeasy Před 2 lety

    How do you go about building that recipe? Seems well planned out

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před 2 lety +1

      This recipe has gone through many tweaks over the years, but I usually start every recipe with a really simple base. Then I’ll add small changes to each batch and see what the effect is

  • @Wulrus_Jones

    Why add acid if the ph is under 5.2? What should the ph be at for a stout? I’m new to ph adjustment

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Brandon, you don’t need to add any acid if your mash pH is under 5.6. You just need to adjust your water so that once the grain is added, your pH remains between 5.2-5.6. The amount of acid needed depends on your specific water chemistry and grain bill. Darker grains are acidic so they don’t need as much additional acid as lighter grains
