    Jeff is definitely Mr. Microtonal. I saw him with Beck, Bogert and Appice when they were calling themselves The Jeff Beck Group. Then I saw him in 1980 for the There And Back tour, with Stevie Ray Vaughan, in Oakland with Jennifer Batten, with Tal wilkenfeld, with Rhonda Smith and Vinnie Colauita. He's fantastic! Nice explanations of some of his technique here, Jules.

      Great video.
      Two things I would point:
      1) installing Wilkinson split roller nut would add extra twang. You could find Japanese licensed correct Wilkinson nut reissued by Gotoh. It costs around USD 100 and totally worth it
      2) Beck uses American Deluxe bridge wirh Callaham block. That gives mote sustain amd better control of tremolo arm (it would not jump in the hole).
      And if you check of Beck live concerts you would note that tremolo arm hole is located closer to bridge pickup (instead of bridge end as on signature model - both production models amd even Masterbuilt). That gives more space for those pinky tricks.
      But that also means you could not upgrade to Callaham block unless you also change the bridge plate. Which I believe Fender did this on purpose to make such upgrades a nightmare. Still worth doing that 100%.
      Cheers.

    First of all, great video and excellent playing, really hard to peg jeff becks style and touch, I think you did a fantastic job.
    I had a question about the signature model tone pots. It seems that my tone control #2 for bridge and middle also rolls off the high end for the neck pickup. Is that a standard configuration?

    • @julesleyhe
      @julesleyhe  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you Taylor! Honestly not sure about that configuration so I don't want to misguide you and say yes or no! I usually just have one tone pot that controls all three pickups- and then usually just leave it wide open the whole time anyway! :)

      Good call, and thanks for inquiring about that super important part of the whole game! In my case my whammy bar is floating with about a step and a half of play (it's about the most you can get before the bridge hits the guitar body and can't go up further UNLESS you reeeeeally have it floating a ton... but a step and a half is plenty for me!) and I have 3 springs in the back, just the right amount of tension to really be able to manipulate the whammy bar comfortably. Thanks for the great comment and for checking out the video!

    I'm considering buying this guitar and found your channel. Excellent demonstration - really was not expecting to find and actual JB fan using his techniques - most people just demo a guitar with a bunch of CRAP pentatonic garbage - you actually demonstrated the music I actually want to play on this thing. Really nice video, and great origin story of seeing Jeff for the first time. The only thing I am concerned about is seeing some reviewers on Sweetwater saying they swapped out the pickups for Lindy Fralins. If I spend 2k don't want to have to first change stuff. But anyway thanks, this video was very helpful for me.

      @julesleyhe  Před rokem +1

      Awesome, Daniel! Thanks so much for that comment I really appreciate it... I totally get the pickup thing, they're a certain thing on this axe... If you're already hip to that part then I'd at least say that that won't surprise you about it. I'm not crazy about this guitar's neck but simply because of how the whammy bar is setup I'm able to do so much of the Jeff Beck stuff that don't bug me too much. I think they could be upgraded but the way the bar works it really does allow you to access a lot of that stuff pretty well!

    • @DanielSchorr
      @DanielSchorr Před rokem

      @@julesleyhe Ok so we're both on the exact same page with this guitar. (I had to rip those noiseless out of a Clapton Strat and replace them with Fender custom 69's.) I think now I may try to take my Strat plus with Lace Sensors and just try the Jeff whammy bar adjustment I saw in another youtube video and see if that works instead. I really like that quiver thing he does, hopefully this adjustment will stay in tune - not betting on it though. Glad I found your channel - you really have the Jeff whammy technique down pat. Saw your Star-Spangled Banner video - sounded great, must've been a blast I'm sure.

      Yes u can set up a vintage style strat trem to do the same. You adjust the bridge block back as far as rout allows.I can get a major 3rd pull up on an original mexi strat, and it stays in tune perfectly, the nut happens to be spot on, always remains in tune. You may need to back the 6 bridge mounting screws a tad to not get binding, but I never touched them. Bonus pro tip; u can also use trem without bar(or with it still there) and get unique non beck derivative sounds by pulling up the back and bouncing/pushing the bridge itself.

      Hey Marcelo thanks! Jeff is usually plugged into (at least) a Marshall and I've definitely seen the Klon Centaur at the end of his rig before. In this case I had the Amp set EQ to 12 oclock and Overdrive channel to 4 with the Ceriatone Centura getting a lot of the harmonics to pop!

I'm going to focus a lot on Jeff Beck since I love him/ have lots to say about him, I'd love to get a lesson on Midnight Walker up there for you! :) Thanks for checking out the video, all the best!

    Jeff was, and is, my all time favorite guitar player, however, regardless of the nuts I've used, (and I've tried them all), the guitar just does not stay in tune when using the bar. What's the deal?

    • @julesleyhe
      @julesleyhe  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I’m right there with you with Jeff as my all time fav… have you tried big bend’s nut sauce in the nut? That tends to work wonders, even just putting graphite from a lead pencil helps too… try either of those/ when you restring I always try and just keep the strings moving around between bending and stretching the strings to kinda “get used to how it works around here” for lack of a better term and it works pretty well for me- hope that helps!

    I know for a fact that the signatures that Fender gave him were never used, his tech told me he didn't like them. He stuck with his parts caster with Basswood body. Don't fall for this marketing BS. Aside from that JB is one guy that can be copied but no-one can capture the ssence that was him. It's a bit like wearing a dead man's shoes. It's about time Fender woke up and started providing value for money instead of pandering to collectors.

      True, he has a Custom Shop with single-coil Suhr pickups with hum killer system, the big roller nut (Wilkinson?), nito finish, and Fender doesn't offer this guitar -Jeff had it modded, BUT, I bought the JB Artist model (same as this vid) in 2019 to get my idea of the ideal Strat (staggered locking tuners, no string trees, roller nut, better access neck heel, noiseless pickups), and I think it's incredible. I think a lot of people will have a different ideal pickup in mind, but this is great for me, so maybe give it a try some time! Wish they had more colours, like red and natural wood, then maybe it would be more popular. Btw, I just adjusted my trem per Carl Verhayen's video -works perfectly!
