On "My Car Story" we're in Chicago on 7-20-20.
We're looking at a 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Corsa Convertible in Regal Red paint. This car is equipped with the factory option 4 carburetors on an air cooler 6 cylinder engine creating 140 HP.
The car's Owner is Neil Gambow. Neil’s had this car since 1999. Neil shares he’s had five Corvairs. He shares he understands the Corvair, it’s the right car for him, and when people see the car, it just makes people smile.
    ENJOY!

The second gen Corvair was particularly nice looking. The Bill Mitchell influence on the Corvair, Tornado, Riviera etc really was a high water mark for GM and American car styling.

I love the beautiful design of the second generation Corvair! My mother owned a first generation as her first car in the early sixties. It was black, with red interior. They were considered "the poor mans Porsche". From my understanding, parts are readily available. Silicone rings have now fixed major issues with oil leaks. I was in talks with someone with the rare rampside truck. Hopefully in the near future I'll have an Corvair of my own!

@@loucostabile If I had the money, I would find the twin of my 1965 Corsa convertible with all the factory options and upgrade the little things, such as hardened valve seats for modern gas, throttle body fuel injection, Viton pushrod o-ring seals and front disc brake conversion. As far as performance is concerned, I was very happy with my 4-carb 140 hp engine. Other than having to replace the pushrod seals, I didn't have to repair/replace a thing. Oh, I ran tires on the back that were one inch wider than the front ones which made a great improvement.

What an awesome car! As soon as I saw the vin I noticed it was a Los Angeles built Corsa convertible, which are way way rarer than Willow Run built Corsas (Ontario, Canada built Corsas are the rarest) and there's a registry for Canadian and Los Angeles built Corsas))! Although the emblem is missing off the hood, which was a 1965 only feature. I just sold my '66 Monza convertible to buy a Regal Red '65 Corsa convertible! I love Corvairs and can geek out for days! I didn't want to sell my '66 Monza convertible (he begged me to sell!), but she's going to a loving owner in California! I have a fleet of Corvairs and have deals pending for more! The Corvair family is a great bunch of people! Great video! I've actually had a Rolls Royce Corniche honk and give me the thumbs up to my Corvair! I've also had Porsches honk and wave! Keep these great videos coming!

Great video, I have a 68 convertible that I restored thirty some years ago and drove many kids in school parades. Now it sits covered in my wood floored bank barn and hasn't seen the light of day in twenty years shame on me. Life has a way of being too busy for the good things. I keep hanging on to it thinking I'll get it out again. My interest went to the way of the FIAT 124 spider and that is what I drive now instead of the corvair. This story and video makes me want to uncover it again.

My first Corvair was a turbocharged '65 Corsa convertible. Over the ensuing years 34 Corvairs passed through my stewardship. Those weights are unique to the second generation convertibles. They showed up in the first generation Camaros too. An amazingly zippy car for having only 164 cubic inch displacement(1.7 liters)

My dad owned a Corsa and I (at various points in life) owned a 65 500 series (95 HP, 3 speed non-synchro, bought for $100, 30 MPG) and a 65 Monza Convertible that someone had transplanted
a 140 HP motor into. He also had the wire wheel hubcaps and at one point I disassembled them, painted the inside black area after careful taping and reassembled, those things are beautiful and much prettier than the later year models which did not have the three prong spinner but a simple round cap. IMO the Corvair 500 will be more of a a collector item in the future than the other models simply due to the fact people didn't think much of them making them scarce.

I had a 1965 basic four door Corvair in sort of an army green color in high school a far cry from this beauty. My father bought it for my mother but she was horrified by the design and color and would not drive it so he gave it to me. I didn't mind the idea of a free car nor did I care about the color because it was wheels man, wheels ! Actually it was a fun little car. My eyes used to burn in the winter with the heater on as the carbon monoxide that was coming off the engine which was the source of cabin warmth sometimes was a little strong. I read about successfully mounting a Tornado drive train "behind" the rear seat (notch for a pulley) of a second generation Corvair.

Should say "Corvair" in script on the hood in 65 and those aren't weights in the corners, they are harmonic dampers with a tuned spring inside bathed in hydraulic fluid to help reduce body shimmy inherent in the 65-69 convertibles. Early Camaro and Firebird convertibles had them too. Very nice ride!!

OK Lou, an update on my Corvair experience. I'm starting a new hobby. Scale modeling! One of my first endeavor will be a 1969 Corvair Corsa. One of the thigs that I want to install is bumperettes. no one has them! So, maybe Lou, you can help me here. The fellow that owns this fine example of a Corvair could measure them that are on his car and then I could fabricate them for my model. Thanks so much Lou. Getting used to using an airbrush is going to be a challenge. haha

I found the ragtops a bit flexible however..the early models, '60 - 64' were kinda tight, and not as sophisticated as the '65 to '69's.......................the only thing wrong with Corvairs. is, they were built by GM bean counters

I remember back in the late 50's early 60's seeing a small car on the road was the exception, as opposed to the rule, as it is today. We would pass a corsair or a corvette and my Mom would announce ' Tell 'em to bring a can opener if you get in a wreck. I'm fairly certain that around this time, we passed the very first VW-Beetle, because our car became eerily quiet, until my Mom said 'What in the Lord's Name was that?'.....My Dad would answer with 'Must be one of those damn things the Krauts are trying to dump on us!'

But after complaints from dealers and owners about lack of trunk space, mid-1960 production cars had the spare moved to the engine compartment, where it remained throughout the end of the model run in 1969. The exceptions were the '61 & '62 station wagons and all air-conditioned cars.

The Corvair had simple rear swing-axles...the same type used in Triump Spitfires & others at that time...they were no doubt crude , but they were cheap to make. Chevrolet at the time, reacted by patching together a cheap fix...but a complete mid-year full redesign should have been done.
