- In this episode of Best of the Blurst, the gang pays tribute to b-movie veteran Albert Pyun. He's made post apocalyptic movies. He's made cyborg movies. He's made post apocalyptic cyborg movies. He's done it all!
- Zábava
Albert Pyun passed away today, three days after the publishing of this video. What a lovely act of giving thanks. Ultimately the reason we love movies is because of the people who make them.
I knew Mike was always a wise, yet misunderstood sage, but this is several more levels of soothsayer intelligence that I did not know he possessed
Wow the timing guys.

Fun fact: All 15 puppet master movies, from 1989 to 2022, have a combined budget of 4.2 million dollars
Thats an average of 280k per movie!
Don't give People Ideas!
The first thing i thought reading the Budget of all Movies and then thinking back to all the Movies was "Damn, i could make a Movie!" and i'm sure i'm not the only one.
And we definitely don't need more People making Movies because they can afford it
But on the other Hand, in the Eternal Seas of Low Budget Movies i have to scroll through forever each Night looking for something to stream on Netflix, Prime, Disney+ etc. i do sometimes find a Gem and afterwards i think "I'm glad they made their Idea into a Movie despite having a very Low Budget

Money well spent 🤣
I got fun watching at least the first 3 movies when I was younger, so IMO it's money well spent
Fun fact Grimace is modeled after a taste bud.
"It's legit the best dummy on this show." - Rich Evans, also kinda legit the best dummy on this show, 2022
He kept talking about "The Dummy" and I kept thinking, 'It's a good thing Mike wasn't at the table'.
If he happened to be filming, I can imagine him, holding his hands over his mouth, trying not to cut in.
Who am I kidding, if he was there, he would of had to say, "You can learn a lot from a Dummy" (early 90s t.v. ad about seatbelt safety).
Just to save the younger viewers from a google search. You're welcome ;)
He don't think he has the restraint to avoid it ;)
Well it's best of the worst, so it's not like there's too many competitors.
Just heard he passed, I hope he had the chance to hear you guys praise his work! This is a phenomenal tribute!
Didn’t realize before this episode how extensive his work was.
Praise? they shit on it throughout the Entire video
@@NihilisticRealism These guys unironically love movies and the work that goes into them. They weren't 'shitting on' his work, they were just playful with it.
"I hate the water" is truly the most villainous line of dialogue i can imagine.
its better than "I hate sand"
“It’s rough and coarse and it gets everywhere… like Disney.”
And that's when they discovered the bad guy was actually Sir Nose D Voidoffunk. Truly nefarious.
This _is_ literally a mostly water planet, so Grunt Man's villany is very sizeable.
"I hate dust! I don't want it building up in my home." - General Darwin
I'm half shocked when they started talking about John Delancey and TNG, Mike didn't burst onto the set like some drunken Kool-Aid Man because Jay actually discussed TNG without looking like he'd rather die.
@chrisbg99 OH YEEAAHHH!!!
He was j e r k i n g o f f behind the camera
You meant, "like a drunken Beer-Mug Man".
Ohhh YEAAH!
I dont think he was there, otherwise he would have picked up on Richs mike issues.
With how much Rich got dunked on (rightfully so) for his mic issues, I was sure this was edited by Mike and not Jay.
Radioactive Dreams is my favorite of Pyun's movies. That one has a unique premise: two dude's trapped in a bunker as children, reading detective pulp for twenty years, then get released years into the post-apocalyptic irradiated punk-tribal society, and they act as old-school detectives, wearing fedora's etc. It's pretty entertaining.
Holy shit haha, have to get on that.
Holy shit, that is a low key genius idea. Fuck Fincher and Scoresse That's the exact kinda movie I would want to make
I'll never be able to prove it but I guarantee the creators of Fallout watched that movie a lot developing the game
That premise sounds silly as hell but also fun in a whimsical and imaginative way. I've added it to my watchlist.
I usually don't watch post-apocalyptic movies, but that premise is fantastic! I'll have to try to hunt it down! :D
We lost another legend. Albert Pyun has passed away at age 69. This was a wonderful tribute and now will have a bigger significance. R.I.P

Rich has so much star power, he can cover his mic with his hand and still look super professional.
The lazy professional Rich Evans
You don't question the stylistic choices of a master. It's Rich Motherfucking Evans. Never afraid to take risks.
I like that he does this while rubbing his neck, obviously from carrying this episode in general, and me and my failed marriage in particular
It took me a second to realize it was Rich’s mic and not my earbuds lol.
Hes in the best shape of his life too, I cant believe a 73 year old can look so young!
Funny that Rich covering his mic with his hand just makes him sound like a normal-volume person
holy shit.. yes.. hahaha
honestly wouldn't mind if he kept it going for future episodes :D
i have to have my thumb on the volume button in many RLM videos because you never know when you're gonna get hit with a 2 minute, ear piercing belly laugh from Rich. sound-normalisation on Windows and my TV are no match for his acoustics... but I love it even though it hurts. its so God damn pure.
it's nice to lay the remote down once in a while tho. I'm all for volume-equalized Rich!!! woo!
For anyone interested in learning more about Albert Pyun and his movies Colin from Canada’s friend Justin Decloux quite literally wrote the book on Pyun. It’s called Radioactive Dreams The Cinema of Albert Pyun.
I'm sure someone else here has mentioned it, but obviously Gibson and Rickenbacker are two famous guitar manufacturers, and the bad guy (Grunt Man) is named Fender Tremelo
And there's another character named Marshall Strat
I'm surprised they didn't notice that all the character names were refences to musican instruments and musicans. Gibson and rickanbacker are both very famous brands
@@bintibrindamour5328 Especially with Josh on the panel, he's usually the first to home in on music trivia.
@@CephyranJosh picked up on Gibson and Rickenbaker. He mentioned that both are guitars. But he also said that he didn't know the name of Van Damme's character until he read it on the back of the box. So I'm guessing he just didn't know the names of the other characters.
Having worked a long day, coming home to a new episode of BOTW.
Could life get any worse?
You don't have to watch it. It's just like driving past an accident, you just look the other way.
Or better?
Imma watch this like 4 times this week
Yes, Rich could be covering his mic
I think you mean, could life get any *best*.
Sometimes I forget the obvious, and this show is proof of how much you love these movies. An honest tribute to a fellow artist, I really think he'll appreciate it. You all have good hearts after all.
Clearly why he wasn't featured in this one, :D

Stanch, not staunch.
These Mike free episodes are like just hanging out with the superhero team after they've defeated the villain for the time being.

What if the last thing he ever said, was:
"That guy's laugh is really fucking annoying."
Apparently, Grimace is either meant to be the embodiment of a milkshake (whatever that means), or... a taste bud. Both bad enough, but the most shocking thing in my mind is that Jay forgot whichever version he read about. I just never really imagine Jay being capable of forgetting things.
I think his memory only works well for movies. If Grimace had been a movie monster instead of a mascot I bet he'd know obscure trivia about the costume, and the time Kane Hodder played him.
I always thought he was a milkshake without the cup, that was my theory as a kid. It was much later that I heard he was supposed to be a taste bud and was like "nah, I like my theory better." Then, decades later, the same debate crops up online with people saying the same things, which makes me think that he was indeed supposed to be a taste bud but I'm not the only one who looked at him and thought he was a milkshake without the cup.
At some point he was evil and he had 4 arms

@Len Kabasinski he keeps covering his face and the mic, he needs to be dealt with. Maybe a movie called “Beat the Rich”
This is genuinely one of the best episodes of the show and legitimately one of my favorite panel lineups.
Pyun is from an era when B-movies were made with creativity, and the directors knew how to have fun. I wish instead of the 26th bad CGI shark movie, we had something like Cyborg. Definitely gonna check out some movies that were showcased at the end and piqued my interest. Best of luck to Mr. Pyun.
Dude, you realise you just talked like the old farts that bothered us when we were younger, they bothering us on how things were better back in their old days? Very wholesome indeed.
Wow this takes me back. About 15 years ago I shot a VFX test with Pyun for a movie that ultimately never got produced. I'd describe him as funny, strange and ENERGIZED. Just a straight-up filmmaking machine. Might have been some cocaine involved but regardless it was a fun project.
Seems Pyun himself was truly one of the "best of the worst" and I truly hope he finds and appreciates this as genuine and loving high praise. Incredible tribute episode boys.
Best of the Worst contributors are being praised.
Half in the Bag movies are becoming worse and worse.

I love Albert Pyun. As a child of the eighties, he was my go-to guy for escapism. Even if he passes, he will live forever. Thank you, sir.
Mrs. Pyun asks people to reach out to Albert, probably drop a line, shoot him a Tweet or whatever the kids do these days. RLM makes the man his own damn BOTW special! You guys are the best and I hope Mr. Pyun sees this incredible tribute. Well done, fellas.
Yes, that was really sweet of them to do. And I was honestly not aware of his work (as I hadn't seen that old BOTW ep), but as the fellas mentioned I was also quite impressed with the style and craftsmanship displayed in his films that definitely sets him apart from most of the others stuff that we have seen here.

Everyone in Cyborg is named after musical instrument companies. Grunt Man is actually Fender Tremelo. Another is Nady (wireless mic maker) Simmons (electronic drum maker). Jack complaining about flannels and 90's fashion in the movie while wearing a plaid shirt over a T-shirt because he is doing the old man thing of wearing what was in fashion when he was young (the 90's) is hilarious.
I feel pretty called out by this post just now crossing into that age.
This has brought up the deepest suppressed memory I can recall. I was probably 9 years old when I was home sick and this movie came on and I thought it was going to be a light hearted movie about videogames but then I get hit with the scene of the mother suicide, resurrection and then killing her daughter and I had nightmares for MONTHS. Thanks for closing the door on this one, I think I can finally see this movie through the lens of this show and realize how bat shit crazy that was.
Yikes! That sucks. Glad you got some closure.
Fun fact the final cut of Cyborg was done by Van Damme himself. Originally the story was more along the lines of a post apocalyptic rock opera hence why everyone in the film is named after music brands and equipment. Albert Pyun basically wrote the original script in a weekend and the resulting film was such a fever dream mess that Canon felt they couldn't release it as it stood, but they couldn't afford anyone else to re edit the film. In comes giga chad JCVD offering to do it himself. The original directors cut only came out a couple years back.
Van Damme also helped edit Bloodsport, and rumoured to have been in the editing room everyday for Hard Target.
@@28Pluto The Hard Target story is hilarious actually. Van Damme couldn't stand Lance Henriksen "stealing" the movie, so made an alternate cut with less Henriksen and more of himself in slo mo, then tried to convince the studio to accept his cut. For some reason, the studio instead went with acclaimed action director John Woo's cut. I found the full story in a book called "Hong Kong Babylon", which has an interview with Terence Chang, co-producer and long time John Woo collaborator.
To add to your comment, it was written in a weekend due to the fact that it was supposed to be another film that was cancelled 5 days before it was set to begin filming. The film it was supposed to be was SpiderMan. Having locations, wardrobe, crew etc. already set in place he made lemonade out of the situation and created Cyborg.

Trivia about the movie Cyborg:
"During the production of the film 'Cyborg', Jackson, who played a pirate, *lost his eye during filming* when Jean-Claude Van Damme accidentally struck his eye with a prop knife. Pinckney sued Van Damme in a North Carolina court and was awarded $485,000. The scene where he lost his eye allegedly made it into the final cut of the movie."
Holy crap.
Thanks for the info, He-Man!
That's fucking brutal. I feel bad for JCVD because he's genuinely such a nice guy and would probably already have felt terrible about it nevermind the half a million... That's rough for everyone involved :(
Fun side note: the budget for the film itself was only $500,000

I really liked that movie. My favorite bit was when the torturer is killed. The torturer is using a foot pedal to turn his grind stone as he sharpens his implements of destruction.

Same. He should be proud of his accomplishments, and I hope this video and our messages of appreciation reach him. Loved quite a few of his movies as a kid.
it's never too late
Hearing him talk about what he REALLY wanted to do with Captain America is heartbreaking, especially in the context of current MCU movies. His cut is far more character driven with Steve Rogers coping with being out of his own time, something the MCU movies only touch on as a joke and when it is serious, it's only for a brief second. Still, his funding just never came through and the movie suffered hard. Despite that, Pyun just KEPT going, I'd be so emotionally wrecked if I kept getting screwed over by studios. But as long as this man had his rubble, he was good.
@@ZyxthePest If you want to be a great filmmaker, it requires more risk that you'll never succeed and more sacrifice. Does that have an English sub yet? I was on a post apocalyptic kick and stumbled on a synopsis, but it was German so I wrote ever being able to see it.
My favourite bad movie of all time. The kids were locked up in the bunker and had nothing than a large stack of their father's detective novels to entertain themselves over the years So naturally, they figured that they, too, were hard boiled detectives when they finally left the bunker, since this was the only thing they knew. Such a great premise for a movie.
Have such a sweetspot for Cyborg.
It was one of those movies that was passed around on a VHS among my friends (who all were WAY to young to watch it) and it had such a vibe about it.
The split, the crucifiction, the kicks. JCVD really was the king for a couple of years.
I second that emotion. And the real lesson of the film?
Fender sucks. Gibson rules.

Ok that "dummy drop" being played over and over and over killed me.
The Sword and the Sorcerer is still one of my all time favorite fantasy movies. A sword that shoots swords is the best.
Rifftrax has it on their twitch channel all the time. It really is great with riffs.
i know a little hylian with a master sword who would agree..
I’m so glad you guys talked about Cyborg. It gets written off sometimes, but there is so much great stuff in it. Thank you for shining a light on it.
@Brian Babin that splits scene is one of my favorite shots in the whole movie. The lighting and shot composition are perfect.
Just bought a copy looking forward to watching the full film.
Cyborg was originally the script for the Masters of the Universe sequel but after there was no way in hell Motu was getting a sequel it was rewritten into Cyborg
I’m such a big fan of Cyborg, a lot of fun action and great sets.
@@brianbabin6333 Straight up my favourite Van Damme movie. I always assumed they were saving this bad boy for an eventual Re:View
It's an ocean of the same comment, but I'll add a raindrop: This was such a respectful and objective take on a guy who either gets no recognition or is treated like a trashy filmmaker. Bless up to the RLM team; this was a wonderful homage to one of cinema's unsung heroes.
Having a really rough time in life atm but this video made me actually laugh for the first time in weeks. Thanks RLM for just being here and for making a lonely person smile for a change. I seriously love you guys!!!
Same here man. Hope things improve for you
Said a prayer for you. Hang in there.
I've been there and binging the entire BOTW playlist brought a lot of light and laughter during that time. hope you feel better soon!
I feel the same when I watch RLM. Just a nice hour break from problems. Hope things are better for you dude!
