This movie is an adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta of the same name, with parts of other of their operettas stirred in. Frederic has fallen in love with sweet innocent Mabel. Yet his vocation is an impediment to their union. Perhaps the situation can be rectified by his old nurse, Ruth, who made a dreadful blunder years before. A highlight is the song/dance A Policeman's Lot is Not a Happy One.

Everyone in this film was so incredibly talented, but Kline absolutely stands out from the rest... his performance is so passionate and he's clearly having the time of his life! i love this film to death, easily one of my new favorite musicals

Really impressed with the risk that Kevin Kline took with throwing and catching his sword at 0:55. If it didn’t work out, they likely would have had to start over the entire songs performance to maintain the casts pace and continuity with it.
Definitely a fantastic small detail that truly adds to the performance!

Kevin Kline must have had bionic legs. I saw this film in the 1980’s and being young and stupid, I tried to copy his Cossack dance. After 2 squats, I had pulled muscles in my legs I didn’t know I had. Hats off to the Pirate King!
