If there was a more recent recording of jeux d’eau from martha argerich in her prime I would rather listen to that, but since her playing is so much more advanced than the rest of what’s out there on youtube i’ll forgive the static. Her playing transcends the technology of that time

however, listen closely to debussy's reflet dans l'eau, and you'll hear the river, and the leaves rushing down its flow, just verry different impressionistic texture for the same element

  • @kitsmits

Wow...I've heard this piece many times and it's always beautiful and shimmery. But the way she plays it, for the first time for me, it truly sounds like one, whole piece. She puts it together, weaves the melodic and rhythmic motives together in such a way that I feel like I'm truly hearing Ravel's piece for the first time. I think what it is is that she doesn't use too much rubato, nor does she ever rush; she sounds whimsical and purposeful at the same time. Not predictable, but understandable.

  • @thomasthompson6378

One of the most fascinating aspects of this performance is how her hands appear to behave as fishes in a small pond on a Sunny afternoon. Watching her hands snap into position is just incredible, she makes it look so effortless. I also really enjoy her unique interpretations, especially with this piece, very interesting and expressive variances in tempo. My teacher used to remind me of how Ravel was against pianists of his time taking liberties with his music, but I've always felt that there must be a medium struck between the composer's wishes and the identity of the interpreter, which I think Martha Argerich strikes brilliantly.

Why am I so fond of this performance from Argerich? I've watched about fifteen pianist's takes on this, such a range of approaches. The performance I would contrast this with is that of Richter. In my humble opinion he is overly strict in denying rubato, and he takes the most rapid tempo of anyone. Argerich becomes one with the instrument, and she brings languid beauty to this 'laughing water god'. Richter hunches over the keyboard like a demanding task-master, not missing a single note. It's an amazing feat but I cannot love that performance. I do love this one from Argerich. I also appreciate the justifiably proud smile that dances across her face after the final notes!

Possibly the best playing I have ever heard in my life...she looks so casual playing, perhaps if she was a bit flamboyant like the men who make a big flourish rising hands off the keys, with tossled hair their face, perhaps more people would write compliments..also, hard to believe this video is 38 years old.....is she retired now, or something?
