Building a Custom Air Conditioner Window Mount for a Sideways Window

  • Summer is here, bringing uncomfortably high temperatures to the upstairs workshop. It is uncommon to find a mount for an air conditioner that can fit in the sideways double-hung windows of the barn, so building one from scratch was necessary. I cleaned out an old Air conditioner I found on the side of the road and built a frame that can hold it in the window frame comfortably, complete with cutouts for the various metal protrusions of the AC, and foam material to ensure a tight seal. In addition, I taped foam screens to the outside grills on the AC (process not shown in the video) because the openings would allow bugs and debris to get in. Its best to sacrifice some airflow to protect the internals of the unit.

Too advanced for me! I’m just looking for how to cut a piece of board to put in the window and cut the hole properly to stick the air conditioning through.

You'd need an awfully big board

Get a sheet of plywood and rigid foam insulation. Cut the plywood and foam insulation to the width of the window opening and slightly taller than the opening of the window when open. Take the plastic extendable fin off the air conditioner. Cut an opening in the plywood for the air conditioner and mount the air conditioner in the opening. Seal the space between the air conditioner and plywood with metal tape. Cut out an opening for the air conditioner in the foam insulation and mount that on the outside of the plywood.
Now add cleats to the window tracks and mount the plywood/ insulation to the cleats. The foam insulation will act like a gasket and make the window airtight and insulated

You forgot to seal the wood. Humidity will wreck it.

All the great equipment! A real shame it’s so over built and still looks very DIY. Sorry man. I hate to criticize but I just had to on this one.

great works. but the advanced equipment is way beyond the vast majority of viewers. A more practical video would be building it using simple 2X4s, or some readily available materials from the Home Depot. Electric saw, electric screw driver, electric drill plus some wood screws are the available items to us.
