Richard Nixon handled Barbara Walters razor sharp questioning style very well years later after the alleged Watergate Scandal! Barbara was always my favourite journalist. Now both of these people have passed and made an imprint in political and journalistic history.
What I'm perplexed about Nixon is, how could a guy who was so smart and articulate, get himself involved in a third-rate burglary which would eventually destroy his presidency.
I honestly think it was a setup to bring him down. He was not involved but tried to cover it up to protect himself and those around him. I can guarantee he did not give it much thought because it had been done so much in the past. He was probably the least corrupt president in modern history.
It's sad to say a live one on one with any president, let alone a former one, for an hour in primetime would never happen today! Old school journalism at its best and Ms. Walters was a master at it!
For some reason people including Nixon privately saw Reagan as a lightweight which confuses me. Reagan was one of the most charismatic and likeable politicians to ever exist and if in an election would never lose he was that good. Plus when you saw his presidency he clearly wasn’t light at all. If anyone can explain where this concept came from I’ll hear it.
Very articulate man. Invested in all things political, with a unique perspective. He was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but he brought many positive things to his presidency.
Damn. Where are leaders like President Nixon now? We have nothing but boys, and no men. Ironically, the Watergate “scandal” wouldn’t even raise an eyebrow in this day and age. God help us….
Once the people lost respect for the office of the president, that respect was gone forever. Before Watergate the president was entrusted with strong political power as commander and chief. That power was reduced after Watergate. Things would never be the same. Fortunately for Nixon, he was spared the shame of being prosecuted in a criminal trial of which he most certainly would have been found guilty and sent to prison. He spent the final years of his life on a mission to leave behind an alternative legacy, one more favorable than Watergate and resigning from office in disgrace. In the end, he went to his grave knowing he was solely responsible for weakening the office of president of the united states. His name will forever be linked with Watergate despite the outstanding elder statesmanship he provided in the years after his presidency.
@@michaeldennistooley4271 All former presidents are referred to in that manner. There exists, however, a gross double standard as per the very biased media. Some presidents were caught up in or involved in 'scandals', and some are allowed to get away with 'situations', whereas, others are not. But they were/are usually addressed as 'Mr. President'. And Barbara Walters has always thought of herself, from her remarks and the publicity about her, as being above the level as a network reporter. And she has abused the status of a reporter, as others have, as well.
Trump is a no-class traitor, as are his sycophantic supporters. 🤢🤮 How disrespectful to Nixon, comparing him to such a disgusting troll. They don't make Republicans like they used to.
He was absolutely brilliant. And he accomplished many things. But to bad he had another side to him.
He outclassed the interviewer here.
Definitely.
Babs was a fraud and a hack. That’s why they retired her to the View.
I think she did great as well guys. Like it or not, she was responsible for bringing the best out of Nixon here.

Much respect for President Nixon.
Wow, President Nixon's comments on the "trendies" probably holds more true now than then. Holy crap
Political bs never really changes.
Nah, it was more true in the 1970s.

Finally! Someone posted this. Thank you! I've been looking for years!!!
Happy to help. I've always found the news and interviews the most interesting recordings on these tapes.
@@imacjason I'll second the above. I watched this interview at its original airing, and have looked for it for a long time. Thank you!

They existed long before today.

Extraordinary man
This interview is SOO prescient in light of what has gone on in the Middle East for the last 30 yrs

good interview thanks for posting
What a sharp mind.
AMAZON has great Richard Nixon t shirts that I ware American history and keep the memory of this great man alive
She asks him why others see him as distant then acts distant when he warms up to her.
love the old commercials
She certainly got straight to it with that first question LOL
A great and historic interview! It was Dick Nixon's come back

Nixon was one of, if not THE, smartest presidents ever. What a shame his insecurity destroyed him.
Regardless of what you or others might say, Trump has done some good interviews!
Interesting to hear his thoughts on Reagan at 26:00.

Barbara is so good at interrupting the guest.
Barbara is aggravating here. Nixon schooled her as always.

The 37th President of the United States. Richard Milhous Nixon. Loved him.
Richard had a brilliant mind. So pragmatic, he knew how rotten the world was. Watergate? He was loyal, defending his friends.

Barbara Walters Richard Nixon interview May 8 1980 ABC 20/20

Is it not 1978? At the start of the interview he says "6 years ago back in 1972". Maybe he made a mistake
@@danielr4774 He made a mistake.
@@danielr4774 Because he is referring to the point when he resigned 1974. (which was 6 years before that).
