  • This film reveals a special place where people with intellectual and physical disabilities find a community of acceptance and are given the tools and freedom to reach their full potential. Producer/director Robert Lang introduces us to Martin Langlois, a severely autistic young man, on his way to his new home at "Maison Emmanuel" located in the Laurentians, north of Montreal. This is the first time that Martin will be living away from his parents. They are concerned, but they know the time has come to let Martin go.
One of a worldwide network of similar Camphill centres, Maison Emmanuel creates a nurturing environment, providing activities and therapies that help individuals like Martin realize their full potential.
We follow Martin's gradual integration into the community and meet the residents who work alongside staff and volunteers to maintain a busy household and build caring and stable relationships.
Two months after his arrival, Martin's parents come to take part in preparing the Sunday meal. Martin has adjusted well. As he finds a new place in the world, our perceptions of people with mental disabilities are irrevocably changed.

We should be inspired to be ourselves not like someone else. We are all made in the image of God. So be who you are and don’t try to be like someone else. Be you. Love yourself.

I just visited that place a few weeks ago, and now I got recommended that documentary, and it is interesting to see how Martin and the whole place have developed until today, but you can recognize a lot of the things in Maison Emmanuel. What a beautiful piece of history to watch in 2022. thank you :)

Originally I wanted to see something completely different, now I am glad to have found this wonderful insight into the work and life of these wonderful people. This place and its people make this world a better place, create understanding for the many different characters and their quite endearing personalities 🧡. These "children" are not sick, they are just different and each of them is a child of God. I would love to know what happened to this project and its inhabitants, 26 years later? Is there a possibility of an update ? that would be just great - thank you so much for this wonderful documentation and thank you so much to all the wonderful people who made this possible🧡

I can tell you, I was there, just two weeks ago, because I know someone working in that place, and for me it was a wonderful experience, I saw all of the villagers which are in the video and I recognize every single one, everyone has his own personality and now they are fully grown men/women/other, but I have the impression they are happy to be at that place, and enjoy their days, so maybe one day you get the chance to visit them too :) hope I could help you a little bit ☺

There are no owners of the community and there are no profits to be made - it is the residents and co-workers who ensure its survival with a board of directors that helps ensure the health of the community through fundraising and collaboration with the long-time committed staff, several of whom have been there for decades. It has grown and evolved, but is still a very loving community.
