Modern Console Table // Floating Console Table // Console Table How To ...In this video, I build a floating modern console table out of solid white oak. Despite it’s simple look, this cabinet required quite a bit of extra work to take into account wood movement in the 4 continuous grain doors. The waterfall joinery of this console table has the grain flowing across the top and down each side for a seamless look. The push-to-open mechanisms eliminate the need for any hardware and give this console table a clean and modern look. Let me know what you think in the comments below! So I’m looking at this amazing build and saying to myself, I’ve got that tool, that machine and that machine so yeah, I can do this. Then I went to my drawer of skill and knowledge and realised how empty it was. I mean it echoes in there. Probably should have invested in the tool between my ears first. 😛
I can't tell you how complimentary and refreshing that comment is. The usual comment is "yeah, I could build that too if I had all those tools." People seem to forget that tools don't drive themselves, nor do they take into account design, joinery layout, wood movement, grain direction, etc. The tools only do what we tell them to do...well, most of the time...😂
The best comment I've ever seen when someone says they could too if ...
Was " No you can't " 😄
@@billystray7007 I think I’ve used that response! 😬😂
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I knew it was you !!!!
@@billystray7007 Guilty as charged!
Whenever I get too chummy about my wood working abilities I just watch this video and am quickly brought back down to earth...
😂 We are all striving to be better at what we do, so just keep at it! 👍
Stopped dovetail key ways... you’re such a boss, Keith.
😂 Thanks bro! Hopefully I never have to do those again, though. 😜👊🏻
Easily one of my top 3 favorite woodworking channels. Love this piece!
Hot diggity!! Thank you so much! 🙌🏻
This video was incredibly impressive. So much knowledge and skill, and better yet you share it all without hesitation. I've been making furniture for almost 4 years and learned a few great things in this. Thank you!
Wow, thank you! So glad it was helpful, Kelby! 👍
First minute explained everything I was looking for. But let's continue watching - there is more gold in there!
😂 Don’t jump too fast!
I think it is lovely how much care and passion for detail you put in your work. Congratulations!
Thank you so much!
Wow! I’ve been working with wood for a few years now, but I don’t think I’ll reach your skill level. I am amazed at what you do with wood. And I love your wit and humor that goes along with it. I’m so glad you are putting videos out again. I really missed them when you took that break. You are my top three CZcamsrs.
My man! Thanks so much, Mike! That's very humbling. And thanks for watching since the beginning...I definitely have regrets about taking such a long break to focus on Instagram, but it's full speed ahead now! 👍
Another awesome job Keith. It's always a pleasure watching a true Craftsman.
Thanks Mike! I appreciate the kind words. 🙏🏻👍🏻
Unbelievable finish! The attention to detail throughout this project. Astounding!
Wow!! Thanks Richard! 🙏🏻👊🏻
Keith, you inspire me to get back into woodworking. After we had our first son years back I just never had time to go down into my workshop. Then we moved and I sold all my woodworking tools. But now that my kids are older and I have more free time, watching your videos makes me want to create again. Thanks so much.
Wow! You just inspired ME! It's comments like yours that make all the hours of editing and filming worth it. So, thank YOU! And best of luck getting back out in the shop and making some sawdust. Just be sure to wear a respirator 😉👊
a god level mode of woodwork. wood working and camping are among my most favorite content on youtube. I plan on doing some diy projects but probably just gonna do the simpliest and easiest way the pocket hole and wood glue lol.
Go for it! 👍
The videos/projects just keep getting better!!! The console table is absolutely beautiful. To anyone wondering if the patreon membership for KJ is worth it, I can vouche that it 100% is!!! KJ has helped me in numerous ways via patreon, thank you sir This is my first time seeing the l-fence, thanks for sharing.
Boom! Thanks so much for all your support!!And you gotta build the L-fence. Super simple and a total game changer.
Awesome job! Also, I finally get to see what rubio natural looks like on white oak...and it looks great.
Thank you! Cheers! I've actually never used it on white oak before either, but I am totally sold now!
Keith you've done it again! Your repair skills are inspiring and this was a very motivating video!
Thanks dude!! Much appreciated, Luke! 👊🏻
Very nice build, especially the door expansion detailing. I've been wondering how to do this the right way for solid wood doors, now I know. Thanks.
You’re welcome! So glad to hear it was useful info!!
This is probably my favorite of your videos. The segment about the batten and expansion was great. I’m also intrigued by the L-fence.
Awesome! Thanks Rich. So glad to hear it was helpful. Thanks for the feedback.
I've been following along with your Instagram stories this year, and the video is great, but I'm glad I followed live. Seeing you react and just solve all the issues as you went was just inspiring to see. Never any real panic, just smart, clever and well executed ideas with great skill. Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate that! Thanks so much for following along on IG and the thoughtful comment. 🙏 👊
You’re a crazy talented dude, Keith. Thanks for sharing the process with us plebs.
Thanks Robbie! Thanks so much for the comment and following along with my content. And we are all plebs in one way or another 😉👍
Looks amazing. Thanks for explaining the details of how you dealt with the solid wood doors. Really useful info.
Glad it was helpful! And thanks for watching and commenting, Zach! 👍 🙌
Wow, thank you for the Blum hinge numbers. So helpful!
You’re welcome!!
Excellent info and perfect timing. I just started designing a floating entertainment unit for my home and was really excited to see this...i'm going to use the same hinges and push-to-open doohickeys you used. Thanks for the links! 🙌🏻. Beautiful work on this piece as always👍🏻
Fantastic! Thanks Seth! Glad it was a timely build 😜. Best of luck with your project!
Very nice indeed! Love the floating cabinet look.
Thanks very much!! I appreciate it!
Nice and clean simple design . Great piece love the way you did the cleats . i also have done cleats like those on a chest lid and have had great results. Thanks Keith
Cool, thanks! Cheers to flat doors and chest lids!! 🍻
I like those hinges. I appreciate your solution to stabilizing the doors. Looks great!
Thanks Julius!! I appreciate the kind words.
One of the best builds I've ever seen. Very straightforward, solid joinery, clean, great materials.
Wow, thanks! I appreciate that 👊. Thanks for watching.
Fantastic work, Keith! Keep it up
Thank you kindly! Will do!! 👍 😎
Very nice! The explanation and details to make this piece last a long time are top notch.
Thank you very much! I always go back and forth on how much detail I should go into, so I'm glad it was helpful. 👍
This was a joy to watch and learn from. Thank you!
Wow! Thanks Sterling! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Keith, another great video. Love the combination of humor and great craftsmanship. I always learn something from your videos. Can't wait until the next one comes out.
Thanks Doug! It’s means a great deal to know you find these videos helpful. More on the way!!
Such a good job! Enjoyed it a lot. And very interesting idea on locking doors' tops to control wood expansion.
Thank you very much! Let's hope it works!
Your precision and attention to detail is excellent. And I learn a lot from these videos. Thanks.
Thanks so much, Ethan! That’s so nice to hear! 🙏🏻👍🏻
Yay! This started my Saturday morning off right!
Also, nice custom ground dovetail table saw blade, Mr. Pekovich!
Haha! Yes!! Pekovich for the win. That's definitely a cool blade to have in the drawer. Thanks Scott!
Great project Keith! I love all the attention to detail and your humor is on point sir! 👏🏽👏🏽
Awesome! Thank you, Jonathan! I do try for a balance between both 😉
YES...my Saturday morning entertainment has arrived..thanks Keith!
Right on Nate!! Hope you enjoy this one!
Another fantastic piece of furniture with the added bonus of great advice. A great Keith again 😉
Thanks Guillaume! Always appreciate the kind words!
Nailed it dude!! Thanks for putting in all the effort to video/edit/voice over.
Much appreciated! So glad you like it man!
I'm not a builder but enjoy watching this high level work being done!! love it!
Awesome! Thank you!
What a simple, yet stunning piece of furniture. I bet it will last for generations even if some weirdo paints it purple down the road.
There are not many woodworkers that put that much thought into grain orientation like you and that really makes a great piece separate from an amateurish one. Congratulations!
😂😆 OMG purple paint...can you imagine?!?! You're probably right, though...all that effort just to slather it in paint and make it look like a giant eggplant. Well, hopefully it will still be functional. LOL. And thanks for the kind words! 🙏 👍
That is beautiful work sir. I really appreciate your skill and the content that you share. Thanks for putting this together.
I appreciate that! Thanks a lot, Tommy! 🙌
Stunning. The attention to detail as always. 🙌
Thanks bro!! Super appreciate that 🙏 👊
Really beautiful and outstanding craftsmanship. Love the result, the humor and editing.
Thank you! Cheers!

I really like how the doors look plus those battens are a really cool idea!
Thanks Evan! Lots of work in those doors, so hopefully they stay flat! 😬😂
Woodworking hero, hope one day to attain that set of skills and perfection
Thank you so much!!
Really enjoying watching your videos!
Awesome, thank you! I appreciate that 👍
Just beautiful work!
Thank you, Kristian!
Very talented WW sir. Thank you for sharing your skills !
Thank you kindly!
Another top class furniture build Keith top notch 👍
Thanks Peter! This was a fun one!
You make better use of Bitmoji than any other woodworking channel. Eat your hearts out Wood Whisperer and Matt Crematorium.
😂😆 Thank you!
You're a genius. Brilliant job.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful work Keith! A lot of detail! Really nice
Thanks a lot, Nolan! Much appreciated, my friend 👊
I would seriously buy this, it looks fantastic for my wall here, i dont have the tools to make this myself, ill leave the craft to others. Two of these floating in the room here on my left would clean up the place, and make it look fancier
Thanks man! I appreciate it.
Потрясающе!!! Wonderful
Thank you!! 🙏 👍
If I could be 1/10th as good as you I'd be a very happy guy! Love your work, you're a big inspiration 💪🏻
Wow, thank you Joe! That is super kind of you. 🙏👊
You are really good Keith, thank you.
Thank you so much, Norm! 🙏🏻
GREAT content. Inserta hinges are a game changer. However when I use Blum's push to open mechanism (Tip On) on hinged doors I typically use a "free swing" hinge which pops the door open way further than the soft close hinge and also helps not have to manually push the bumper in before you close a door that has soft close hinge on it.
Thanks Taylor! Good tip! These hinges allow you to turn off that soft close mechanism, so if the client doesn’t like the way they operate currently they can turn it off. 👍🏻
I love staring my Saturday mornings off with you, #shopsoundspodcast and a video, can't get much better. It has been great watching this come together in your stories so seeing it all wrapped up in one video is very satisfying.
My man!! Thanks Jeff! I hope Jason pronounced your name semi-correctly 😜
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking it was close enough, and I got a good laugh out of it.
Sir. I came to know about you on Instagram. You are the most skilled, intelligent and knowledgeable person i have ever known in the field of wood working. I have never seen any of the tools you have been working with in my country. Respect your knowledge.
Fan from india Sir.
Thank you very much!
Such a beautiful work of art!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
I don't think anything right now. I am just to impressed!
And I am mighty thankful. Thank you!!
Keith, is very good see your woodworking videos more often.
Thanks Tony! Definitely more in the hopper. Stay tuned!
Masterly executed!
Thank you sir!! 👊
Nicely done Keith! I have heard you and other mention those hinges before but it didn't register that they were an expansion type of fit. I really like them. Those could certainly be game changers in certain wood types.
Definitely! Makes for a much easier install when you don’t have to drive screws in to hold the hinges to the door.
That turned out awesome!
Thanks man! I appreciate it!
This video was awesome. Thank you!
You are so welcome! Thanks Jerome!
Videos like this really help me realize that I don't know s*** about anything. I am an expert in nothing... But I love woodworking anyway! Thanks for the lesson in humility 😅
😂 rest easy, my friend! We are all at different levels and all still have lots to learn 👊🏻
You my friend are on another level!
Thanks man!! 💪👊
Beautiful piece!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
This is top work, attention to detail! Great!!

Great work. I like the dovetail key ways. That was quite educational to me.
Awesome, thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Totally love your videos! Your workshop is very neat and clean and your videos moreso. The little sprinkle of jokes are a plus. Big ups Keith!
Thanks so much, Frank!! 🙏🏻🙌🏻

Stunning. So talented. Yeah, I have a few of these tools but wonder if I’ll ever get to make something like that.
Thanks Chris!! Time is a definite obstacle, even when you do this for a living 😂
really enjoy your building process nice job
Thanks very much! I greatly appreciate that 👍
Beautiful cabinet, and a great video. Dovetail battens are a time-tested method to keep panels flat. Unless abused, this piece will last for hundreds of years.
I love your optimism, Rich! I sincerely hope you are correct...you just never know when wood is gonna stand up and smack you square in the face no matter what you do to control it. 😜
Great video Keith
Thanks Dave! Much appreciated 🙏 👍
