    I bought a 140 in 1989 and had it for 10 years. The guy I sold it to still uses it, without a hiccup to this day, 32 years later.

    Awesome finally an old Kenwood video! They are so affordable that more and more people are getting them and it's great when Mike does them so we can learn how to troubleshoot. These and the early hybrids are fantastic radios to document here!

    TS-940s restoration. Power output on all but the 160 meter band, was unsure. I unplug the PA and hook to a load and meter and I got power. Then hooked to out of low pass, no out on 160. Started clicking through the bands, used a flashlight on relays, sure enough one relay not moving. Found an open coil winding in relay. So when key up all power reflected back, lucky no damage. Since this low pass has its directional coupler for SWR after the low pass, radio had no idea it was destroying itself. Love the videos. Sorry I rant a lot.

    I bought a used TS140S in 1989 and I still use it today. It had the MARS/CAP modification so it will transmit just about anywhere, but I never use it out of band. The guy I bought it from had a MARS permit so I know he used it for that. He also had CB19 programmed into one of the memories so he was probably on there a lot too. The rig still works pretty well, except the fan doesn't seem to come on anymore. Not sure if the fan needs to be replaced or something else. Thanks for doing this interesting video.

    Thank you! I had no xmit but partial receive on 40m and suspected the relays. Found cold solder joints as you did and followed your advice. Works like a champ again! Thank you! 73 de WB2SMK

    One of my favorite radios. Easy to use and easy to work on. Should have never sold mine after 14 years. I miss it. Good advise on how to re-solder those relays Mike. I completely agree. Only down fall with these rigs are those slide switches. Thanks for sharing.

    • @wilsonri
      @wilsonri Před 5 lety +1

      Hi buddy. I was gonna ask you what you thought of this rig. Those slide switches are stupid but have you heard of any other complaints? Thanks. Richard Wilson

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop Před 5 lety +1

      Other than the slide switches these are great units. I had mine for years and never a failure with it. I would love to own one again. Had good audio and strong signal. Easy to operate. Only complaint I can think of is folks using them on another service and blowing the finals out. Other than that, great radios.

    Great job Mike. I picked this radio at the Ft. Wayne Hamfest about 3 years ago. You're right about the ease of access. I added a filter for CW and a digital input for computer. Military guys make a mod to transmit on mil frequencies, (actually any frequencies). I know there's a trick to broadcasting on AM but it will broadcast at 40 watts or less. My power cord looks vaguely similar. weird. Thanks for the video.

    Hi Mike. Believe it or not that power cord that he sent you was what was included with my TS-680 new. His may have seen better days but those fuse holders were what they shipped it with. I still have mine somwhere but I use a Kenwood power supply these days.

  • @vhfgamer
    @vhfgamer Před rokem

    Judging from the symptoms and your description of what's happening up to the 8 minute mark, my educated guess is a bad solder joint that is expanding and contracting when it heats up and cools down, or when it got shipped.
    I'm going to keep watching to see if I was right.
    EDIT
    Yay, I was right!

  • @zman4150
    @zman4150 Před 5 lety

    Thanks for the video Mike! My TS-430s suffered from cold solder joints in the final section. I had to remove the old solder and add a "Z" jumper for the pass-throughs for the transistors in order to clear up the no TX problem after an extended keydown period.
    On a side note, i find it a bit strange that these rigs have an output of 100+ watts on AM - I always thought they were throttled back to 25. I thought mine was modded! 73...

    Hi Mike,
    You need the get out the amateur band chart. Some of the freq you selected were out of the band and it won't transmit. 73 WB3BJU

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  Před 5 lety

      Yes but that depends on TX modifications done to radios. MARS/CAP mods done to radios effect TX range differently on different makes and models. This radio had some of those mods done to it previously.

    • @DonDegidio
      @DonDegidio Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Mike,
      You're correct, but most of the amateur radios don't have the MARS/CAP mods. Since it had the mods, it will transmit on more freqs. Good info on re-soldering all the relays. 73 WB3BJU

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  Před 5 lety +1

      I would have to disagree. A large number of the customers radios I see on my bench, I have bought used and have seen owned by licensed amateurs have the MARS/CAP mods done to them. I swear people do it just because they "can", even if they never transmit on those frequencies.
