- Hi everyone! Thanks for watching this video today, I can’t wait to show you how to paint a monarch butterfly using the following colours and brushes:
14x14” canvas
Titanium white
Light ultramarine blue
Pastel purple
Ultramarine blue
Black
Luminous yellow warm
Neon orange
Liner or round brush for small details
Filbert or flat for wing shape and body
Large blending brush for background, I’m using #50 filbert

Oh my gosh Joni this is beautiful. I always enjoy the way you talk people out of their anxiety about mistakes with black paint. I'm new to using acrylic wer on wet on canvas like you would with oil but I can't wait. Been a butterfly nut over 50 yrs. I love this

Lovely! I adore butterflies. I was wondering have you ever painted a Blue Morpho butterfly. I saw some at Butterfly World in Florida. They are so beautiful. The outside of the wings are brownish with what look like “eyes”. The inside of the wings are the most beautiful iridescent blue I’ve ever seen…..would love to see you do one. Thank you

I love how you paint. Some artists just leave the particular shape and paint around it but I just love how you make over it! Also, which paint brush did you use to paint the black lines in the butterfly?
Thanks! I used a filbert, a round and a liner brush for the black lines :)

Differently angled wings also make butterflies and birds seem more alive, as dead butterflies usually are pinned accurately on cardboard and dead animals are pinned accurately onto paraffin wax sheets, so one can see and admire nature's beauty and exact replication on both sides. So having the wings at different angles really helps to put pictures into a lively state. ^^
When painting such a butterfly on a colored cardboard without fading effects, how and where can I set the background color on the sheet, so that the butterfly also may stand out? Does it help to add a little fading on a few places of the negative space and do I then use the same color as the colored cardboard, or is it better to use a complimentary color for fading effects on part of the negative space?
