I'm a complete novice though (never even had a gel manicure), so have been gathering information for a while. I watched part 1 of this video and went ahead and ordered everything I need - the lamp, the IBD builder gel, brushes, and primer. The primer arrived today - I'm so excited! Thank you for the information you provided - your method is exactly what I was looking for (gel to strengthen my nail, grow out/infill without soaking in acetone to remove, use normal nail polish over the top). You're so very welcome Lara. One thing to remember is to give any product a chance but with this product, it doesn't take long to get used to. Also, since it doesn't dry until you cure it in the LED lamp you can work with it as long as you want. Tip: start with very thin coats. You can always apply more than 2 coats if needed. Hope this helps. :D

I tried the Modelones (most purchased on AMZ).. the “builder nail gel… It worked GREAT on my dominant hand, but chipped, broke, etc. completely on my non-dom hand, so trying the IBD hard gel for the first time and.. caught it on sale (!) on AMZ! Thanks for the great instructions and 🫰🏻that it will work! I should give kudos to the liquid clear Modelones builder gel: It did not harm my nails one bit! So if you are a pro, try it!

Apply gel base to your brush after cleaning… I have actually (took some time & a few tries) brought 2 brushes back to perfect use- takes cleaning in 70% alcohol (dollar store!) and I have been using Modelones’ “Brush Cleaning Essence”2.71 fl ounces and then any gel base, then use brush cover and store x a few days-a week, then do same thing-repeat until your brush returns to a useable brush. It hasn’t worked every time: nothing could bring back one… Worth a try!

Nail Tip I've Learned About: to save a broken nail - use Kiss nail glue and acrylic powder. brush on nail glue where you have nail tear, dip nail in powder, brush on glue again and dip in powder again. (then I discovered this makes nails hard so I've brushed entire nail and dipped nail and brushed again with glue and dipped again in powder) So I am so glad to find this video! Hi Rose! No, this will not damage the nails. I've been using this gel for a long time and I love it. The only way your nails will get damaged is if you pry off this gel, any hard gel brand or acrylic. So removal of any artificial nail products is very important. Great tips! I'm so glad this product is working great for you.
It arrived yesterday afternoon. I put on and shortly after most of them started lifting. I did file nails as you showed in video. Noticing today some nails have air pockets and may start lifting. I did not get polish you put on prior to hard gel. Maybe I should of. ?

I have a slight bend to my index finger nail and (bear with me, this sounds bonkers) if I push it straight with an orange stick while curing, will it hold its natural shape? Hope I make sense lol
Great! I'm glad you found my video! I'm trying to picture what you're saying... It certainly doesn't hurt to try it. If it holds it's natural shape, it will be temporarily until the nails grows out or you decide to remove the gel completely. I'm sure you'll have to file the surface after curing to make the nail smooth. If it doesn't work, then you at least tried. I hope I helped. P.S. I love the word bonkers! :))))
What is the clear nail polish you used before applying the purple color? I am now using hard gel on my natural nails! Thank you for your help on this! I found out the layer of gel nail polish people use under hard gel is to make it easier to remove the hard gel. People that use a layer of gel nail polish under hard gel find it easier to remove hard gel by soaking in acetone. It’s a trick but not needed. I had no issues applying IBD hard gel over my nails. I thought it was going to be difficult and it’s not. I also find holding my hand upside down helps the gel to level before curing.
Hi Elizabeth! Thanks for sharing! Great to know! I used my favorite - - Orly Bonder Rubberized Basecoat (I thought I put it in the description, but I didn't - - thanks for the reminder :)). You can find it pretty much anywhere (CVS, Target, Sally Beauty and so on...).
StyleByZaza nothing sticks to my nails! I removed layers of nails and dehydrated them but primer on and hard gel is still comin off. I don’t get it. A gel nail polish doesn’t last 12 hours on me. I need to find out what’s wrong. Acrylic does the same thing.
Follow-up comment: it took me longer than it would a professional (I now have even more respect for them!), but I did it, and they look great & feel very secure. I will definitely try it again.

If you file down the hard builder gel extremely thin, are you able to then soak off the thin layer of hard gel left on the natural nail to avoid filling the natural nail? I’m asking specifically about the clear Builder gel, not the other clear gel.
Hi Kory, I've done it both ways... 1) didn't file the gel and just soaked my nails for about 10 minutes and most of the gel came off (using both builder and clear gel). 2) I filed most of the gel and soaked off the remainder for about 5 minutes and the gel also came off. So either way works with either gel.
My old nail tech used to put a coat of ibd hard gel over my regular gel polish. He moved so now I found a new place. I got my nails done with gel polish at the salon and would like to put a layer or two of hard gel on top for strength. How can I do this? Do i file the top layer off and then apply hard gel and cure?

Hi Priscilla! In this video I used regular nail polish over the hard gel so I used top coat by Out the Door (FYI... all products used are listed in the description below the video). I've also used gel nail polish over the hard gel which I prefer because my mani lasts longer. Years ago, I used acrylic but never really cared for it. I find hard gel is soooo much easier to work with and it allows me to grow my nails as long as I want. You'll save a lot of money doing it yourself. It may not be perfect the first time you do your nails but believe me, with little practice, you'll be a pro! Good luck! :D

I've never had any guitar players ask about their nails, but I love that you're the first! :D I recommend LED/UV Hard Gel: amzn.to/2xeZjgQ It's formulated for natural nails. Make sure you prep your nails and lightly buff the nails so that it's free of shine and oils then apply a primer before applying gel: amzn.to/2VdMOKI After you remove the tacky layer, I highly recommend you buff the nails to your liking and apply gel top coat and cap/seal the free edges. Doing so will prevent lifting and your mani will last longer (up to a month believe it or not). Here are a few of my favorite non-wipe/no cleanse top coats: amzn.to/2Vk7VLr, amzn.to/2XlnDII, amzn.to/2JU0rte I hope this helps and good luck! Hi Anita! If I use regular nail polish, I light buff the nails to remove shine, then use regular acetone (not pure/100% acetone) it takes longer to remove but it doesn't ruin the gel. If I use gel polish, I file the color off. I hope this helps. :)
I have a question: I recently bought this Magic Remover for Gel Nail Polish from Amazon: Magic Gel Polish Nail Kit, Nail Care Quick and Easy In 5-6 Minutes, Professional Nail Kit Gifts for Women, and I am wondering if this would hurt the hard gel by using this product for taking off gel polish. It works great on getting polish off, but I do not want to hurt the hard gel product by doing so. And, I noticed that you do not use a "base coat" b/4 you use nail polish, I have base coat and top coat, but is that just a preference of yours or should I use the base coat?

Hi Ann! You're very welcome. I rarely remove all of the builder gel on my nails because I rarely have lifting. If there's a bit of lifting, I only remove gel on the areas that are lifted. I think the last time I removed all the gel on one nail only was about 5 months ago or so. Hope this helps. :)
Hi Zaza great video. I want to repair a broken nail with glue first then try the gel builder to make it strong. Have you done this? I also love red carpet manicure and use the same lamp but notice if i repair a broken nail w glue or gel resin the surface is so smooth the gel polish does not adhere and peels right off. Maybe this does not happen with this gel. Any tips?
Hi Heather! Happy New Year and thank you very much! Yes, I've done that several times and it works like a charm! TIP: Lightly buff the glue or gel resin then apply gel polish. I like to apply a couple of thin coats of glue, lightly buffing after each coat, then I apply primer and then gel polish or hard gel. This or any hard gel brand will help keep your nails from breaking and allows you to grow them as long as you want. Hope this helps! :D
You can completely remove hard gel by filing it off, soaking it off (which can take longer than filing it off) OR doing both (filing most of it and soaking off the remainder).
Hi Jenice! You only need to use one so either one works. I've never used a UV lamp, but I recommend LED lamp because it cures gel polish in 30 seconds versus 2 minutes when using UV lamp. UV lamp cures all gel polish brands and LED cures LED specific gel polish. There are a few gel brands that require UV lamp, i.e. CND Shellac, Gelaxy, etc. Also, LED lamps are considered safer because they require less curing time. Oh and LED lamps used to be more expensive but prices have dropped tremendously. I've seen LED lamps on Amazon for $6! Hope this helps! :D
Yes, you put gel nail polish over regular nail polish, BUT I highly recommend waiting at least 6+ hours so the nail polish is completely dry . I prefer to wait at least a day and then apply gel nail polish top coat. If the polish wrinkles/smudges, it means you didn't wait long enough. I never tried gel builder over regular nail polish. I'm sure it'll work. Test it on one nail and see how it turns out. Good luck! :)
How many uv led watts needed to cure the ibd hard gel????? I have bad experience using uv sina gel it's not cure and i prefer using polygel because it's easy to cure
I've never used sina gel but I've read the product doesn't cure at all. Reviews mention it's cheap cheap cheap so maybe that's why it doesn't cure. You should be able to cure any gel product with any type of LED lamp as long as it's at least 24-36 watts.
With practice, you'll get the hang of it. No, I don't wet the brush. The gel is suppose to be thick which is good. It gives you time to work with it before curing.
Hi Monica! Yes, you can pretty much use any primer. I prefer acid-free primers because acid primers can cause burning sensation. You don't have to use a primer if you don't want to but it does help eliminate lifting. If you have oily to very oily skin, then I recommend using a primer to help remove the oil from the nail bed and help adhere product to the nail. Have a great day/evening! :)
I just recently had to cut all my nails down. Can you use this product on nubs? I keep trying to grow my nails out but they peel and crack. I use to go get my nails done every 3 weeks, but with the pandemic I’ve started doing my nails myself. Just let me know. Ty for your time.
It's suppose to be thick. Are you using a gel brush? Gel brushes are designed for easy gel pickup and application. They make gel polish thinner, but I don't recommend it for hard gel. I'd be more than happy to look at the consistency if you'd like to see if the you received a jar that's been stored under the sun before it was sent. My old nail tech used to put a coat of ibd hard gel over my regular gel polish. He moved so now I found a new place. I got my nails done with gel polish at the salon and would like to put a layer or two of hard gel on top for strength.

Hi Priscilla! In this video I used regular nail polish over the hard gel so I used top coat by Out the Door (FYI... all products used are listed in the description below the video). I've also used gel nail polish over the hard gel which I prefer because my mani lasts longer. Years ago, I used acrylic but never really cared for it. I find hard gel is soooo much easier to work with and it allows me to grow my nails as long as I want. You'll save a lot of money doing it yourself. It may not be perfect the first time you do your nails but believe me, with little practice, you'll be a pro! Good luck! :D

Hevin, these are great videos! I am a fingerstyle acoustic guitar player and I need to start doing my own nails. I can no longer rely on a salon, especially since they're all closed now due to social distancing. Have you had any other guitar players ask you about their nails? Which ibd hard gel would you recommend for heavy-duty wear (guitar picking on steel strings)?

I recommend LED/UV Hard Gel: amzn.to/2xeZjgQ It's formulated for natural nails. Make sure you prep your nails and lightly buff the nails so that it's free of shine and oils then apply a primer before applying gel: amzn.to/2VdMOKI
After you remove the tacky layer, I highly recommend you buff the nails to your liking and apply gel top coat and cap/seal the free edges. Doing so will prevent lifting and your mani will last longer (up to a month believe it or not). Hi Anita! If I use regular nail polish, I light buff the nails to remove shine, then use regular acetone (not pure/100% acetone) it takes longer to remove but it doesn't ruin the gel. If I use gel polish, I file the color off. I hope this helps. :)

I have a question: I recently bought this Magic Remover for Gel Nail Polish from Amazon: Magic Gel Polish Nail Kit, Nail Care Quick and Easy In 5-6 Minutes, Professional Nail Kit Gifts for Women, and I am wondering if this would hurt the hard gel by using this product for taking off gel polish. It works great on getting polish off, but I do not want to hurt the hard gel product by doing so. And, I noticed that you do not use a "base coat" b/4 you use nail polish, I have base coat and top coat, but is that just a preference of yours or should I use the base coat?

Hi Ann! You're very welcome. I rarely remove all of the builder gel on my nails because I rarely have lifting. If there's a bit of lifting, I only remove gel on the areas that are lifted. I think the last time I removed all the gel on one nail only was about 5 months ago or so. Hope this helps. :)

Hi Zaza great video. I want to repair a broken nail with glue first then try the gel builder to make it strong. Have you done this? I also love red carpet manicure and use the same lamp but notice if i repair a broken nail w glue or gel resin the surface is so smooth the gel polish does not adhere and peels right off. Maybe this does not happen with this gel. Any tips?
Hi Heather! Happy New Year and thank you very much! Yes, I've done that several times and it works like a charm! TIP: Lightly buff the glue or gel resin then apply gel polish. I like to apply a couple of thin coats of glue, lightly buffing after each coat, then I apply primer and then gel polish or hard gel. This or any hard gel brand will help keep your nails from breaking and allows you to grow them as long as you want. Hope this helps! :D

Yes, they're shiny before buffing but the shine doesn't last - - look dull after a while.

You can completely remove hard gel by filing it off, soaking it off (which can take longer than filing it off) OR doing both (filing most of it and soaking off the remainder).

Only use LED lamp with gel polish products. LED lamp does not work with regular nail polish.

Hi Jenice! You only need to use one so either one works. I've never used a UV lamp, but I recommend LED lamp because it cures gel polish in 30 seconds versus 2 minutes when using UV lamp. UV lamp cures all gel polish brands and LED cures LED specific gel polish. There are a few gel brands that require UV lamp, i.e. CND Shellac, Gelaxy, etc. Also, LED lamps are considered safer because they require less curing time. Oh and LED lamps used to be more expensive but prices have dropped tremendously. I've seen LED lamps on Amazon for $6! Hope this helps! :D

Yes, you put gel nail polish over regular nail polish, BUT I highly recommend waiting at least 6+ hours so the nail polish is completely dry . I prefer to wait at least a day and then apply gel nail polish top coat. If the polish wrinkles/smudges, it means you didn't wait long enough. I never tried gel builder over regular nail polish. I'm sure it'll work. Test it on one nail and see how it turns out. Good luck! :)

Does the led/uv clear one do the same as the builder gel? Can I use the led/up clear one on my natural nails ?
I've have both and honestly I didn't notice a difference between the two. So yes, you can you use the clear one on your natural nails.
How many uv led watts needed to cure the ibd hard gel????? I have bad experience using uv sina gel it's not cure and i prefer using polygel because it's easy to cure
I've never used sina gel but I've read the product doesn't cure at all. Reviews mention it's cheap cheap cheap so maybe that's why it doesn't cure. You should be able to cure any gel product with any type of LED lamp as long as it's at least 24-36 watts.

With practice, you'll get the hang of it. No, I don't wet the brush. The gel is suppose to be thick which is good. It gives you time to work with it before curing.

Hi Bree! Longer than applying regular polish over regular base coat. For me, it lasts about 8-12 days before my nails start to chip.

Hi Monica! Yes, you can pretty much use any primer. I prefer acid-free primers because acid primers can cause burning sensation. You don't have to use a primer if you don't want to but it does help eliminate lifting. If you have oily to very oily skin, then I recommend using a primer to help remove the oil from the nail bed and help adhere product to the nail. Have a great day/evening! :)

It's suppose to be thick. Are you using a gel brush? Gel brushes are designed for easy gel pickup and application. They make gel polish thinner, but I don't recommend it for hard gel. I'd be more than happy to look at the consistency if you'd like to see if the you received a jar that's been stored under the sun before it was sent. You can take a video of you dipping your brush in the gel and gently stir it and send it via Instagram DM @StyleByZaza.
