- One of my favourite Callas recordings, her Sempre Libera is out of this world! I did my best with the cleanup but there are many faint pops and clicks throughout - time is an issue for me - but all the biggest have been removed. Side 5 was particularly scratched, but there are no major sound flaws. Also features a radio interview with Callas which i have posted previously.

Recorded 3 June, 1952 - Hudba
I was in that presentation. I was 10 years old. My father was the General Manager of The Opera Hall of the Palace of Fine Arts in México. I had the privilege and great fortune to assist to all the Giuseppe Di Stefano and Maria Meneghini Callas (then), Mario Del Monaco, (the most handsome guy I've ever seen personally), Giulietta Simionato (the most gracious modest artist I ever met) and many other great singers and performances at this my beautiful México City theater. I had the autograph photos of all of them. Callas SUCCED and was recognize first in México City, immediately next in New York.
The Callas was very fat then. But beautiful. Gone days now.

Maravilloso!!!
Such a great performance! Her second act is a masterpiece. Not a single passage is left without meaning. Callas masters her voice with and takes us into the character transformation. From the light, bright, high notes of a Violeta to a passionate woman who is forced to leave her true love. Her "Amami Alfredo" is unique. First time I truly believe Violeta is so in love and leaving him is losing everything. When we listen her "in me rinasce, rinasce insolito vigore" we know she is dying, she makes us feel that. This is so difficult to achieve and to understand it just listen to any other singer's recording.
VIOLETTA please ah ah!
The one and only...something superhuman about her...the ease, the sound ..the Traviata of all Traviatas....
Callas is inimitable in this role. She sings the dramatic scenes with such urgency and dramatic intensity. There is nothing left to say about her Sempre Libera. What I think also deserves acknowledgement is how she plays the scene with Germont pere. Riveting.
Wow amazing!
I wish I lived in the 50s to endulge myself with my significant other, in this concert in Mexico's finest Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Gracias!!!
Oh wow, her voice is so fresh and free. It has the classic Callas resonance/tone with the smoothness and grace of youth. I have a recording of her and Alfredo Krauss performing La Traviata in Lisbon in 1958 but this, 6 years earlier, is ever so slightly and subtly purer. She's 29 in this performance and it shows. Beautiful. Thanks for posting.
bravissimo campolonghi
How is it posssible that such a jewel has not been more enjoyed by opera lovers? There shoukd have thousands of likes for it!
Thank you so much!!!! My grandfather was Ignacio Ruffino that sang with Maria Callas. It's the first time that I hear him sing opera. Thank you!!!!🙏😃
El canto mucho en esos años!
That's what we are allways restless searching for. Thanks!!!!!!!!
Callas=perfect sense of timing, dramatic flow, unbeatable in this role The live Lucia with Karajan has the same magic for me
Great recording! Those high notes are so easy!
Mr turniplover................. thanks so much. She was amazing. I love these early recordings. No one shall ever come close... lots of wonderful sopranos, I respect them all but Calla was above them all - way above.... Thanks again. Charles
I swear,I have to collect myself after the"E'strano..." the beauty brings one to tears!
Potente Callas!
yes! there was videos of her Traviata and almost all the roles she performed in Mexico sadly all those videos were destroyed during an earthquake in Mexico city
Everything's been said about her. Just having a great time on this 31st December listening to this marvel. Thank you so much for the upload.
How wonderful to hear how the audience appreciated the art they experienced.
Amazing Callas! Great diva in all times!
Thanks for all the work you put into this, Callas. Fan.
Brings all the world together in harmony THANK YOU
haha i love how you can hear the prompter
thank you so much tornipoverlord for sharing this magnificent treasure !
many many thanks for uploading this wonderful and interesting rendition!
Stupendous job cleaning this up! Thank you VERY much!!
They will both be with us forever.
Magnifique!
Bravo !
Bravo dear John for the fantastic recording by La Divina than violetta-thank you very, very much-Kind wishes from germany michael
Thank you very much, it is my pleasure to share :)
1:38:12 I get the impression that the E flat was her calling card in Mexico. There's of course the Aida, this, Rigoletto, and Lucia. Any other operas where she interpolates it? I haven't heard the Toscas, Norma, or Trovatore. E flat aside, are any of those essential listening? I'm tempted to get the newly released Trovatore from Divina
You should for sure the the divina Trovatore. She has a couple of WILD E flats in the opening aria. You won't find a clearer sounding copy of the recording, Pablo at Divina works wonders. I'll buy anything he releases instantly.
Meraviglioso! Great!
Gracias por compartir esto.......
María y Pippo VIVEN!!!
Stratospheric singing.
Thank you so much. Huge improvement in sound.
Splendida interpretazione !
Holy Cow-- that high E-flat at the end of Act II (shortly after 1:38:00) nearly caused me to wet myself! I'm not aware of any other sopranos having done that-- in fact, I don't know of any other performance where Callas herself did that. Is that in any way customary/traditional, or is this just one of those bizarre early Callas things that was a one-time experiment never to be repeated?
It's a one-shot marvel. Never have any soprano (as far as i know) attempted a fil di voce Eb6 at the end of Act 2. The feat is so difficult even Callas herself never repeated it in any subsequent performance.
Wow just Beautiful.
This is very, very good. Less mannered than the later versions with Giulini.
Distinctive, fresh, driven playing from the orchestra and great singing from the principals at their peaks. Thank you for posting.
vielen Dank für diese wunderbare Aufnahme
Perfecta!!!!!
Viva, la Divina Maria!
Vielen Dank für diese schöne Aufnahme
There are more commercials minutes than actual opera bravoooooooo
Dear John,
I do agree compleatly with your opinion, ,,,
Simply magnificent and divine , bravissima, dear Maria Callas !!!
Thank you for the big pleasure and the very high "re"-quality of your recordings, John !!
With all my compliments,
Bernhard Hedenus and also my Friend Dr. med Michael Zahl
What can one say when we hear musical, theatrical, vocal perfection? The only words I have are: O my God -- thank you for the gifts you gave this artistic genius.
Fantastica!
Maria Callas....then everyone else that ever sang....untouchable on that form.
Gran dio und das Life !!!
Sempre Libera 27:07
Absolute perfection. The crowd goes totally wild !!
No one comes close today
IT IS ONE OF THE BEST RECORDINGS I HAVE HEARD
like rosa ponselle 1935
As beautiful as Ponselle's voice was (perhaps in terms of beauty even more beautiful than Callas') she didn't have the technical refinement to give full justice to the role of Violetta.
Hermosa.
I love Callas and Di Stefano as Violetta and Alfredo. They were really sweet together.I have heard the performance which occured exactly two weeks after this one -Rigoletto , in which Piero Campolonghi played Rigoletto , De Stefano played the duke of Mantua and Callas played Gilda .Callas hated that performance a lot , because she was not pleased with how she sang Gilda. She hated her voice .Also , about a month after this performance Callas and Di Stefano sang in Tosca , with Campolonghi as Scarpia .
The Lisbon Traviata was filmed in its entirety, but the owner won't publish the full performance.

I thank you for this is it any wonder that she was cast as Medea,in the film of the same name in the 70's?She IS unearthly. I used to see albums in "City Lights Books"[the down stairs in San Francisco,or just down the street,'73-'74.I was poor then,so no buy.Ha you could live in S.F. and still go out;saw my first opera, opening night,standee,100th anniversary,,''Norma",Sutherland.
Braaavooooo

Alek Maksimovic!
@@alekmaksimovic9092 Did you want to tell me something?...
OK. These recordings are amazing, but are there any complete opera videos of Ms Callas where one can see her performing these works live?
There are some rumors...but apparently no.
With what turntable/ cartridge did you get such an outstanding sound from this recording - WoW!!!
Saluti Gino
👏👏👏👏🤩
I'm so glad I speak four languages and after SIEMPRE Libra the commentary is incredible the audience Goes Wild and the man speaking has a vast vocabulary he's so articulate when is describing the frenzy that the audience is so expressive appreciative of this great diva. Sad to say most Americans do not speak more than one language. I am 6th generation American my father spoke four languages my mother spoke 3 my daughter spoke 3 I speak four languages my wife speaks two languages. Western Europeans Embrace their culture and then handed down to Generations as well also most Europeans speak at least three languages perfect example if you go to Portugal 80% of the population speaks English and Spanish. Portuguese and Spanish are not very similar actually Italian and Spanish I'm much more like. The majority of Spaniards do not speak Portuguese because it's a difficult language to learn about the romance languages. Romanian French Italian Spanish Portuguese. My ancestors where French Spanish Portuguese British Isles. In the British Isles primarily speak English except for whales they have their own dialect and speak English as well. Once again TY CALLASFAN you are simply a treasure we deeply appreciate these great performances I just finished the First Act I look forward to Maria Callas interview Etc your Opera loving friend Arnold Bourbon Amaral
Callas would just swallow the music and it would just become her,but organically

One thing I absolutely hate about live-performance recordings is hearing the prompters, like some ugly propter factum echo before every single line. Here they're especially audible. What is the point of them? Are you seriously telling me these world-class singers didn't know the lines to pieces they performed dozens of times and rehearsed a hundreds times more?
Yomiko Readman Oh hush up. Don't ignore a gift my friend. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
4:00 9:00
Commercials....😢😢😢
Why do you mention Arturo Toscanini? There is NOTHING in this recording related to him. Artists are Giuseppe Verdi (composer) and Umberto Mugnai (conductor) of this 1952 performance. Please correct the description as it is misleading, apart from false and fake.
I don't mention Toscanini in the description. The information that refers to him is auto compiled by CZcams. I can't do anything about it.
@@CallasfanRecordings I see. And I am sorry for not noticing the separating line between your description and the CZcams auto compilation. It seems inappropriate to have such information in that position. I find it very unthoughtful. Be well.
It sounds like a guy is reading the libretto out loud, why? Is it for the audience, so they can hear it and understand it better?
Bianca - This is a live performance; what you are hearing is the prompter, just in case any of the singers forget their lines. He is usually positioned in a little cubicle, directly in front of, but slightly below, the stage. :)
Prompter is so annoying :(
+regulargonzalez Blame Pippo. You will notice in a couple of the videos of their final world tour 1973-74 where they are accompanied by a piano only, a page turner sits next to the pianist and is feeding the lines only to DiStefano. The prompter never fed any lines to Callas. And you are right, it's very annoying.
+Patricia Bogni Exact..
You should try standing on the stage and dealing with the prompter...but I can tell you from experience, there are moments when the prompter can save the performance...and if the prompter is bad, it is best to pull rank, if you have any, and fire him or her...Remember that Opera is a repertory industry and singers must carry around any number of roles in their heads for any given season...something we just all need to deal with and move on! Like great conductors who hum...i.e. Toscanini
Of course, nothing is ever Callas' fault...
Let's not be blind. Callas ALWAYS wanted a prompter! She also asked for one during Paris concert in 1958! She had an amazing musical memory, but sometimes she forgot/messed up words
NO .
