    Most people don't handle "I love Emilia" that well, and I think many people miss the point of it. A major part of Rem's adoration of Subaru stems from his previous actions and "not giving up on anyone", which directly saved her and thus gave her purpose in her life. Rem is in a catch 22 because while she would love to run away with Subaru, Subaru picking Rem over Emilia (particularly in this instance) would mean that Subaru is giving up on Emilia (for whom everyone knows he loves). And not giving up is what draws Rem to Subaru, thus "if we run away together now, I would be leaving behind the Subaru-kun that I love most".
    In this light, "I love Emilia" can be interpreted as less of a rejection, and more of an affirmation of Subaru filling into the role of the hero that Rem sees, who never ever gives up, including Subaru's adoration of Emilia.

    • @Fotoschiki
      @Fotoschiki Před 14 dny +19

      I totally agree.
      In fact it was Rem who rejected Subaru first. He told her everything she wanted to hear from him and she answered with her love fantasy. But it can't ever be more than a fantasy for her for exactly the reasons you layed out. He opened his heart and gave himself completely into her hands with his will broken and his sould shattered. If she was selfish, she could use his weakest moment to her andvantage and take what she always wanted.
      But that's not the kind of person Rem is and this Subaru is not the one she wants. His love for her would be selfish, but her love for him is selfless. That's why she'd rather see him happy with Emilia as the Subaru she loves, than as a broken empty shell with her.
      In the same way Subaru's love for Emilia is also at it's core selfless, even if it became tainted with his flaws creeping up in the last episodes, which is what he embraced at the end. Emilia saved Subaru from his darkness, like he saved Rem.
      It's heartbreaking but at the same time beautifull.

      And that is why my form of checking people's media literacy is how they see this scene . It wasn't "I pick Emilia over rem " it was I choose to not give up on something I love . The quality which rem loves the most in subaru

      the problem with this is his "love" of emilia is little more then a fascination at this point and his childish belief he isekai'd into the hero of a story, and she the heroine who will make all the suffering and struggle worth it. she's a touchstone not a love
      I do believe you're right in part that people who disliked the "i love emilia" disliked it because they liked rem. but i also think a big part of it was how shallow his love for emillia appears to be at this point.

    I got the English VA to autograph a picture of Subaru because of episode 18. Subaru is overly hated because people don't really like what they see, but Subaru illustrated that he also sees all these things himself and I've never seen a more powerful meltdown in anime before or since. The english VA acted the absolute hell out of the scene too
    Rem was a real one too, I understand why some people love her so much, and it explains a little bit about why she was so nutso in the OVA praising Subaru so hard. It was funny, but with context it hits a lot harder

    1:30:52 I understand that perfectly. This episode changed my life because I saw myself in Subaru's words. Putting on a mask of pride due to being ashamed of yourself, being so young but still feeling that you have wasted your life. When he said "I did nothing" a feeling of shame and regret came over me because that was exactly the way I was living my life.
    This episode is very divisive because many people focus on "Rem's confession". That is the name by which many people remember it. So when that confession is not reciprocated is the moment where many decide to hate Subaru and the series. They feel the romance is the point and tend to ignore the rest. Almost no one hates the episode because of the discussion, in fact Subaru acknowledging his faults is payoff for most viewers, it's just the last few minutes that tend to upset people. And the point is not to belittle Rem's feelings either. They are a crucial part of making this moment work. The parallel between the two and the development Rem has had makes her the perfect person to have this conversation with Subaru. It's not just "Rem's confession" or "Subaru's episode". The dynamic between the two characters is what allows the message of this episode to be conveyed. It's called "From Zero" because it's about always being able to start over even if we don't have Subaru's power. No matter how many flaws you have or how much you hate yourself, if you are able to recognize that there is something wrong with you then you can decide that you want to change. And yes, deciding that you want to change is not going to fix all your internal and external problems, but in general it is usually one of the few things that we actually have control over. And starting from there is the key to making things better.
    Subaru isn't perfect after this, it's not like everything about him has changed here. He hasn't become more competent, he hasn't fixed his mental health, he doesn't love himself, but he has finally decided where he wants to take his life. That's why this episode is so beautiful.

    Ep 18 is, arguably, Inori Minase's, not just her best performance as Rem, but perhaps her best single episode performance of her career. She absolutely nails it here. Rem knows Subaru loves Emilia from the start, Rem knows Subaru is at rock bottom, but she still wants to be his rock. Great performance.

Subaru is one of the most interesting characters I came across besides my favorite one (not hard to guess based on my profile) in the medium. Eh. I disagree on Subaru saying that he's got no more answers or solutions is arrogant of him? Because he's really only talking about himself in that moment. He's not saying that there aren't any ways to solve the situation and that he's thought of every single possible solution, he's solely talking about the things he can do to try and solve the situation. Like, if someone else came by and offered an actual solution to Subaru that he thought could work, I think Subaru would have taken it in a heartbeat. But everyone who he has reached out to simply doesn't believe in him.
    Like, you mention that he has other options, like trying to better negotiate with the other Royal Candidates, but the reason Subaru can't see those options isn't because of pride. It's pretty much the exact opposite I think. Subaru can't/doesn't see all the other things he could bring to the table because of all of this internalized self-hatred and loathing. I wouldn't call that pride or arrogance.

    What should be mentioned is that this episode also divided the ReZero community. Suddenly a shipping war broke out because many got hung up on the “I love Emilia” phrase and took it personally that Subaru didn't respond to Rem's feelings.
    Everything else that was said in the episode was then ignored and the true purpose of this scene was no longer recognized. Only complaints and hatred towards Subaru.

  • @jacobkrawczyk4772
    @jacobkrawczyk4772 Před 20 dny +10

    Subaru's rejection of Rem is a hotly debated subject within the Re:Zero fandom - and it catalyzed a lot of undue hatred toward the series. There's a lot to be said about it, up to and including details from the novel, but there's one thing that always sticks out to me as most important for understanding it: Rem not only knew Subaru loved Emilia, but likely wanted him to say as much. Rem knew going in that Subaru wasn't over Emilia, and that giving up on her wasn't a result of falling out of love. It follows that, if Rem's goal is for Subaru to remotivate himself and be once again committed to his goals, she would want him state said goals with confidence. Honestly, in my opinion, to not affirm his love for Emilia would be an insult to the effort she put in.
    Not that I don't feel for her, mind you. In fact, her love being so earnest only makes me want to root for her even more than I already did (which is a lot). As far as shipping goes, if it matters, I would want either a polyamorous end or for Subaru to get with Rem - that's what makes sense to my heart and mind - but I think Subaru said the right thing regardless of that desire. Because of it, even. Besides, it's not like an early rejection during the prologue is enough to knock out someone as spectacular as Rem. She's far too proactive and passionate.
    On a (slightly) different note, I just want to take a moment and appreciate Rem as a character. Everyone knows Subaru is great - genuinely one of my favorite characters in fiction - but I feel that Rem is often seen as an accessory to him, or as a plot device. Admittedly those takes tend to come out in conversations about the aforementioned shipping, which really isn't surprising, but it's still worth at least mentioning a few things about her that make her great. Primarily, I want to talk about how sincerely bizarre and unwell she is. Her infatuation with Subaru is such that she watches him sleep. She filled a tub with mayonnaise just because he mentioned that he likes it. She has a death wish of sorts, being willing to die for those she cares about without a second thought. Her own lack of self worth mirrors Subaru's in many ways, and even after having her "time restarted" she retains her tendency to overcompensate. She's also still very violent and aggressive - that aggression just happens to be aligned in a pro-Subaru direction now.
    Critically, Subaru saving her didn't magically fix her. She now relies on him - on his existence - as a sort of coping mechanism, and she retains a lot of her unhealthy thinking patterns. Additionally, her strange behavior doesn't go unnoticed, particularly in regards to her obsessive tendencies. Subaru himself is put off by her watching him sleep. The point being that she's a freak - a total oddball - and to me that makes her significantly more interesting. All of the loyalty, kindness, patience, wisdom, and love would be infinitely less compelling to me if it came from someone untarnished.

    The reason Subaru does not explain himself is Emilia would not consent to leaving the village to die. And they do not have a means to transport everyone quickly. Hence she would never try and leave them. He thought that not explaining him self would at least give him a chance.
    Also Subaru running away would not necessarily doom the world. Afterall we do not know whether Puck is the strongest being in Re Zero. Subaru is betting on someone like Reinhard defeating and killing Puck before he can destroy the world.
    Really. Asking for millions of loops. That is just asking too much of some person. It would make more sense if there was a path. It's one thing if you know your attacks are doing some damage. Maybe it is low but you are damaging the boss. The fight might last for 20-30 minutes. Maybe even an hour. But you would win. It is another when your build does so little damage that even with optimal timing it would take days of continuous playtime to defeat the boss. At that point it is basically impossible. So at that point you go do something else and not fight the boss. Same difference. Asking someone to have that much mental endurance is too much.

    You keep repeating Pride as if that can be the truth... but it cannot be the truth.
    Pride means you set yourself over others; while what he is saying and I feel is the reverse of that.
    Putting ourselves bellow others.
    In my case I see that othersare more capable in so many ways each and everyone.
    Its Envy pure and simple.
    Knowing that changes nothing though.
    I can say I am no longer sinking deeper without trying to get out of the mire; but knowing the distance is not the same as being able to reach it.
    I know that I need to repair my self image and confidence.
    But all I can afford is free; and all I have energy for is virtually nothing.
    As Subaru says... Its not easy giving up; it requires years of reinforced theory to reach that conclusion and as bias as the learning was it still takes time to unlearn it.
    I see RE:Zero as the pinicle of explaining how hard life is to change. Its not that Mushoku Tensei does so terribly just that its to unlike my own life on an emotional basis to really synch with me.
    Episode 18 is where RE:Zero finally made me aware that Subaru's journey could help guide me through my own darkness. Act as Therapy to some extent because His journey out of negative self view could show me a way as well. Showing me pit falls to avoid and things that might shift my POV enough to get others advice better.
    Episode 18 is also Why I will always argue that Rem is better for Subaru than Emillia; despite not actually caring about the shipping wars. I will argue her just to continue a trolls arguments that I am wrong; why people would argue over such unimportant things is beyond me... like Fantasy Football I just do not get the appeal. Tho in all honesty I think Subaru should marry Betty... she needs someone that could love her for her. I think Subaru could after watching S2.But I digress.
    These are my fave episodes until S2 comes along with a few I like more.

    The thing that's evident after you've read the novels is that you're missing a lot of context when you can't see into Subaru's mind. The reason why he's so insistent on not explaining himself to Emilia is because he's afraid that he can't reveal too much about his past lives without being gripped by the hands. So when Subaru is frantically trying to get Emilia to leave, that's why he doesn't come right out and explain about the Witch cult. Admittedly it is hit or miss when he actually worries about that though, as sometimes he'll mention something from a past life, like when he tells Crusch about the Witch cult attacking, but he doesn't mention it here to Emilia. Usually when he does mention it though he'll try to be as vague as possible.
    Edit: This is why he's so defeated when they don't understand him, because he can't figure out how to explain something to them without revealing information that could potentially hurt him, and now after what happens to Emilia, he'll be (and I would be too) afraid of what might happen to those around him if he were to reveal too much. Unfortunately though his thoughts on this subject aren't brought up in the anime. Just imagine the frustration of knowing something awful is going to happen, but you have no way to convince those around you that something is going to happen. This brings us back to Subaru's and Emilia's fight, Subaru knows that she's in danger she has died and he has died trying to protect her, but he couldn't say that and she can't know. I think his desperation and savior complex is honestly earned at this point - because he IS the protagonist, he IS the hero. He's the only one who can fix a situation that would otherwise get everyone killed. He doesn't have any flashy skill to pull it off, but he has to orchestrate events to move things forward. So that pressure and weight obviously got to him, but if he can sort out his emotions and think things through, that's when his true strength may reveal itself; as Rem would put it, his determination to win is his real power, and as he would put it, his weakness.

    • @Birthday888
      @Birthday888 Před 17 dny

      I mean, also, revealing that he knows the Witch Cult is coming would just increase the amount of suspicion and questions Emilia and the people around him would have for him. At the end of the day, there's really no explanation he could offer that wouldn't boil down to "Trust me, despite the fact that I can't divulge everything."

    • @Hirome_Satou
      @Hirome_Satou Před 17 dny

      @@Birthday888 There is one way that I think he could get out of it fairly simply, honestly, though the current Subaru at this point in the anime probably wouldn't come up with it because he doesn't know much about this world yet (AND THIS IS WHERE I SUGGEST ANYONE WANTING TO AVOID ANY KIND OF POTENTIAL SPOILER FOR EVEN MINOR WORLD INFORMATION WOULD LOOK AWAY);
      He could claim that he has a gift of premonition where he sees the vague possible futures of those around him to a limited time scale. With that simple explanation the people closest to him would likely immediately believe him, especially given his track record already up to this point with getting into and out of situations where any other normal person like him would die very quickly. Since people in this world are often born with gifts that give them otherwise unexplainable powers, I feel like pretty much everyone would believe him within a short time of being around him while he's looping and he knows of things that are happening before anyone else.
      Edit: This method I think would get past every barrier he has to telling them about his power, because I don't think there's ever been an instance where he hasn't been allowed to talk about the events of a past life, he simply can't talk about the actual mechanism by which he knows.

    Imagine how good the fans were eating when they got this episode a mere three weeks after Episode 15, which was still burning bright on the interwebz. Honestly, I forgot where I heard this but Rem actually pulls off a pretty therapist-approved move here. It's said that the human brain can only think about seven things at a time. That's why when the only things going through Subaru's mind are moments that reinforce his self-hatred, Rem stunlocks him by rapid-firing her positivity.
    It's easy to fall into the corny side when writing a dialogue that spans 20 whole minutes, but Tappei surprisingly manages to avoid it. He really went all-out on writing this arc. So many genre shifts happened in these past couple of episodes and there's only more of them coming. Also, huge props to my guy Subaru for destroying any potential of a canon harem. The "I love Emilia" line was memed to hell and back when it first aired but I'm glad he outright said it because it's the only thing I don't like about my other favorite isekai *wink-wink* Anyway, props to the author, the anime staff and especially the VAs for such a wonderful performance. Pragmatism doesn't take into account the amount of trauma that keeps piling on with each death. Subaru doesn't just feel the pain of death but also keeps all the feelings that came with that and it is compounding. Too flippant is right. I do understand the idea of saying, "death is the answer" but would it be good storytelling if he was gunho about doing it? I would even posit that proposing that that is what he should be going for (aka that he shouldn't be running away from the "answer") would also be bad. I think Subaru feels real because he makes the decision that you and I would probably would make in a situtaiton where we are asked to feel unspeakable pain, fear and anguish. He says "I don't wanna" and that makes sense to me. Anything else would feel like a video game character going through the motions and although this situtation in many ways feels like a video game (and it feels like that is your mentality, as in it just makes sense to reset when you mess up) I think it is better to treat it with the weight it deserves.

    Not wrong but misses the point entirely.
    The point in this case that matters most is that Subaru has no known control over said reset point.
    At least at this point in the series.
    Ask yourself about the first ten reset points of Subaru... Thats right you can't...
    Apple stall guy just before the theft and after the start point.
    Mansion bed after Bettys first interaction.
    somewhere in the small town after Rem saves him.
    Now Once more in the market but while Rem is alone with him; after the fight with Emillia and your being used as a whipping boy.
    Thats 4 start points and very little connects all 4 if anything does in the first place.
    So Why those 4 points or the next 2-5 that I know... my bad the next 6 thanks to my question.
    If you do a day count of others POV that Subaru has been alive... you realize how lil time has passed for others? So its not remembering a boss fight to use your analogy its actually remembering a Dungeon Raid as your a member among a party of 24 and you must Shio from Log Horizon the thing by remembering each detail of all involved and each monster on top of the boss and not only the most common patterns but each pattern of each thing and each location. All perfectly organized and filed so others that come after you can follow in your foot steps.
    Thats the problem with choosing death. Its way to shallow of a decision to just default to.
    You need each life to count for the max value; if you get stuck in a place as alive and being experiemented on; sure it sucks. But whats worse still is the thought that maybe you died before learning critical info that could of saved anyone.
    Being held against your will is horrendous but ultimately it makes things not your fault. Choice was removed so its not your court anymore. But choosing to not know more means actively giving up on those you could save.
    Since you cannot fathom why each moment is not a reset point then all you can do is be optimistic about it and forge your path forward however you can.
    Personally I would NEED to IMMEDIATELY figure out all the rules to this terribly inconvenient power so I could make the most of it. But man would the training suck.

    I know i write a lot about a lot of thing there are still a lot of emotions about this that i miss to say (And without saying that subplot with my best friend, that is another cane of worms) but all i can say is, i wont gve up, i and just tthis dayo stubburn and hardhead to do it, but i want to make my dream come true, i finally start going to that new college, the day you are uploading this video i start my second day in it, and i am enyoy it

    • @yagami_tatsuya
      @yagami_tatsuya Před 13 dny +1

      Love can generate both virtues and vices, as while virtue is defined as an orderly habit that seeks good, vice is a disorderly habit that also seeks good. In both cases, the person is seeking, to a greater or lesser degree, something they like/love. A virtue can become a vice when there is an excess or lack of what it represents, for example, the lack of courage leads to cowardice, while an excess leads to recklessness.
      Both the coward and the reckless act out of love (disordered) for something and, ultimately, for themselves; the coward does not exercise courage because they fear the consequent result of their action, while the reckless acts imprudently aiming to achieve the good that prompted them to act, without considering the consequences of their action.
      Ultimately, all virtues are children of prudence (seeking good through the straight/ordered path), while all vices are children of pride (disorderly pursuit of good to satisfy one's own will). Therefore, it is not virtue that originated vice, but the disorderly will that, not submitting to reason, acts passionately and disorderly; virtue/vice is the mere practical manifestation of the will, and therefore, no, envy is not prudent just as lust is not frugal, as they are modes of action, essentially, antagonistic.

    I still say Envy fits better.
    The POV is not about how much Subaru knows; its about why he felt he could not think of more.
    As unreasonable as it is look at all the amazing people around him all being selfish or at least demanding more than an obviously end of rope person could offer.
    Crush is a military force... now if Subaru was clear sighted in the first go through then he simply had no way of knowing what she would want. Yes you can argue that asking straight is an option but would she truly offer the truth? No shes to guarded. At the first visit to Priscila; did Subaru really have the experience to know what she truly was like... NO. He could not have met her on even ground. Same goes for Hoshi and same is true of Feldt and others. In short the truth is he had no options; BUT that is where Return by death trumps most every other ability.
    If your Mad as a Hatter and throw shit against the walls to see what sticks enough metaphorically; you can learn all that.
    At life 3 tho all that can be said is that Subaru has a sliver of usable info... but if it had been IRL he would of failed to see things fully enough. Lets not kid ourselves Subaru is fleshed out proper but most side characters are not so far.
    Why would Crush help Subaru assuming he has any knowledge she would want. She has known him for far to short a time to expect trust; on top of which Emilia going down would benefit her to much... rinse repeat for the others.
    What can Subaru do to change things enough realistically?
    Nothing really.
    Lukily its not realistic its a story so Main Characters must succeed more often than fail when it truly counts and things fall into place somehow. That is how Stories work that have good vs bad in them. Otherwise they'd fail to entertain properly because things would end to quickly as they do in reality.

    And finally, we hit rock bottom. Or to use the show's phrasing, we hit square zero. As someone that's been through my own journey with figuring crap out and seen others on their journey, rock bottom really is a special place. Up until that point, you can use all manner of denial and deflection and other psychological tricks (subconscious or otherwise) and try and pretend that there are no problems or that they're not as serious as they seem. But once you truly, seriously hit rock bottom, it all fades away and all you have left are the things you were turning away from all along. And since they're your only company, for the first time, you start to actually look at them face-to-face. See the ugliness, the stupidity, the arrogance, and whatever else lies in that messy blob of imperfections. Finally, you start to accept your flaws. And Subaru certainly accepts his, going a bit too far in fact, which is also something that seems typical of someone that finds themselves in rock bottom. Once you finally drop your guard and let the door open only for a deluge of flaws and imperfections to fill the room that is your mind, it starts to seem like the flaws are all there are.
    "I'm worthless. I can't do anything. I screw up everything I try to do. Everyone hates me. I've never done a single good thing for anyone. I've been a jerk to everyone that knows me." ad infinitum. They're based on some truth but they're exaggerations of it. And now instead of ignoring all the bad stuff, you start ignoring all the good stuff. It's almost like an over-correction after a lifetime of under-correction. And honestly, if you don't have anyone to give you a reality check and show you a way out of rock bottom, you might just stay stuck there for a long while. Thankfully, Subaru has Rem. I've recently been learning a lot about the best way to get through to people, especially ones that stubbornly reject outside points of view, and I think Rem exemplifies the best way (that I know of) to get through to these kinds of people . And that is to not engage with their arguments.
    You don't start a debate and counter every single point they make, trying to make them see the error of their ways through a bunch of well-reasoned arguments. No, that hardly ever works, not when you're dealing with someone that's internalized a certain belief or system of beliefs to the extent that they consider it immutable and irrefutable. Which is why what Rem does is brilliant. Instead of refuting what he says, she simply tells him what she believes (weeeeeell, she tries refuting him at first but eventually, she changes her approach). She doesn't tell him that he's wrong, or that he actually totally does have value and he's just being dismissive of all his positive qualities, and if he would just think a bit more calmly about it, that he would get it. Instead, she just says what *she thinks of him* and lists the positive qualities that *she sees* in him. None of it is denying what he said, it's just offering a different perspective, which is just as subjective and potentially flawed as Subaru's own. But it works so much better. Because he's not being denied directly but he's still being offered a perspective that conflicts with his own, he still ends up lashing out and tries to shut down Rem's opinion as hard as he can and reiterates his own opinion, and claims that she just doesn't know him as well as he himself does. And Rem, again being the bigger person, doesn't call out his behavior as being wrong per se, she just reiterates that whatever Subaru might think of himself, other people have their own opinions of him and there is absolutely no reason why their opinions would be invalid if they don't match with Subaru's opinion. And that's what works. It's not a refutation but an alternative perspective, one that Subaru could easily choose to ignore if he so wished, but one that he *feels the need* to reject. Which is what makes it powerful. And which is why it gets through to him.
    All this to say that when I first watched this episode, I low-key loved it but couldn't really explain why but now that I'm watching it as a slightly more experienced person, I high-key love it and I could go on for ages about everything that I love about it. And THIS is why I love negative character development arcs. There's just something extra special about seeing a person go through the worst of it, where the worst of it is mostly internal problems (although Re: Zero certainly has its fair share of external problems that both make it more engaging to watch but also often drive the internal problems), and then make it through to a better place mentally/emotionally/spiritually. It's probably the same reason I like redemption arcs so much. "You can be a terrible and/or flawed person, hit rock bottom, and still come out the other side a better and improved person (at least internally and internal change often always leads to external change)" is just such a powerful and fundamentally hopeful and positive message that I just can't help but be moved by it.
    OHHHH, and can I just mention that when Rem goes on about how Subaru only sees himself as he perceives himself and doesn't think about how Rem sees him, it's like a positive inversion of the entire argument with Subaru and Emilia where he only saw the Emilia that he wanted to see? In that case, he only saw an idealized version of Emilia instead of the real Emilia. And in this, he's seeing an idealized *worst* version of himself instead of the real him. And Rem just lists out what she sees and how that doesn't seem to match at all with his version of himself. Damn, I never really caught that until now. God, this show is so well-written, I love it so much.

    Regarding Puck ending the world it might not be so stupid of Subaru to think he can avoid it - because Reinhard still exists, the absolute OP that should stop threat like unleashed Puck before it causes too much damage to the kingdom and the world. By that logic, Subaru running far away with Ren to Kararagi isn't the dumbest idea, I believe there is even a "What If" story by the author describing that.

      Wdym? The Sloth if story wasn’t written because people disliked the rejection, it was written because this is one of the several turning points in the series, which also got their own if stories. To reduce it to mere pandering is just wrong.

    Well just because Puck says he will destroy the world doesn't mean he can.
    Does his area of effect really extend to the edges of the world, or is there time for other monsters such as himself to appear and dispose of him before all of it is lost?
    Puck seems like an endgame monster but even here he talks about how the White Whale is closing in, and it seems to be somewhat of an endgame monster as well..

      @@subarusama5673 I'll get a bit spoilery here but:
      Puck actually blocks Emilia from using normal magic with his contract with her. I think it was something like that he didn't want her to grow up conceited by the amount of magic she possessed. So until S2 when the contract is broken and she sees herself use magic in the trials she is unaware of her own talent. This is later something that she has to train up in the year to S3. I assume that you mean the iceblood-crystals, but Puck is the one that uses that during the movie, not Emilia.

    Just when you thought it can't get any worse...
    🚩💀🚩 But wait there's more!🚩💀🚩
    In the world of Re0, Sometimes we don't just rub salt in the wound, Sometimes we rinse with sulfuric acid and debride it with a nest of fire ants.
    Staggering that one step further on in the vain Hope that it can't possibly get any worse, to the realization that you can't possibly be more wrong is NEXT level (thank you, Nicholas Cage) hubris that Subaru pulls off so well.
    Subaru's plan to Nope out of the situation runs into the same problem He and Emelia have with each other: " The me that lives in your heart is so much more than I could ever be "
    Even more so than the night at the travel inn, or the broken crawl in the shattered cave, Rem Reveals how much she has really really really thought about it. Her bridal bug out plan is well thought out and fully detailed... Far beyond subaru's instinct to just run.
    But she can't let him do that. Because the Him that lives in her heart is so much more than what he believes of himself.... But she is not wrong. 🤔
    Blinded by pain amd trauma, Subaru can only see himself in the mirror darkly. His flaws loom in stark relief, And his reopened wounds are too fresh, too raw. So after a confession for the ages where she rejects his reality and substitutes her own, Throwing him a lifeline in the shark-infested waters of self recrimination and despair.... The worst thing he can do is say no right? Right?!

      I mean... Subaru has been sadistically murdered by Rem and that Emilia was the first person he was able to interact with without the shadow of his father or his past hanging over him. Or the fact that Rem acknowledges that the Subaru she fell in love with was the one who never gave up, and that giving up on Emilia would be Subaru giving up and failing to live up to her image of Subaru.
