  • Moody's Warning on India's Population "Quality" | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Ratings agency Moody's has warned India that having a large population is not a guarantee of economic success, it must be backed by quality education and infrastructure.
It has also claimed that India's education quality is behind that of China and Southeast Asia. What can India do to plug this gap? Palki Sharma tells you.

One more problem I see is that tartiary institutions like IITs, NITs, IIITs etc became exclusive where a small segment of students eat up the bigger pie of education budget and at the same time leave the country for jobs in US. Government needs to enlarge the funnel so that maximum number of students get quality education and training.

India is largely over-populated relative to its land mass size and the quality of that population is largely unskilled (in productivity and fiscal terms) and but perhaps that's what makes India great, since that large population is also very spiritual (not implying fundamentalism or fanaticism). If you are a Ph.D. and you apply for MTS job then you are an example of a person who is legally employed but in reality he does not have a quality job equal to his quality. A dangerous situation about to unfold where demographic dividend becomes a demographic liability ... 😢😮😮😮
Edit: If you are a Ph.D. and some private institute keeps you at a poor salary, Rs. 25,000 or so, then you are still an example of disguised unemployment. Because you are not getting quality salary. No institute is giving 5 lac packages to freshers. I know. I am a faculty. There are some people below who support NDA privatisation of universities. They are andh bhakts basically. :)
Edit 2: The attraction for government jobs would not stop because private institutes give poor salaries. NDA privatisation of the Universities would create a future jahaan aapke bache majdoor honge aur businessmen Universities se araam se 500 crore per year revenue earn karenge. 500 crore is the average revenue per year earned by business families aur aapke bache ko woh Rs. 25,000 de denge bheekh mein. Quality and quantity is improving. Infrastructure projects are being pushed in many areas and it will take time. So will building up educational level and reputation. Still we are about 80% literacy rate and we will keep moving further. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Also, Moody's is a private organization that will do anything for money regardless of the consequences to the people in the country or at the world at large.
P.S.: This brandishing of educational "achievements" is toxic. See what is happening in Kota for cracking competitive exams and think about that being applied to a whole population, that is what is called Education in East Asia and parts of SE Asia. It seems pretty cool in the short term but the future of they country are broken for that. Our system is improving organically and that is why unlike all other developed/fast developing nations we still have a stable population growth among replacement rate. Moody's first and foremost task is to report situations that impact financials accurately. Not even Palki is slamming them saying much or their assessment is 'nothing new'
India has a long hard road ahead. It will take patience. Indian media right now is pretty heavily stoking the fires of "up and coming power" and India is looking to skip vital growth industries and "leapfrog" right to the upper end. This will lead to the "haves" and "have nots" and lead to a revolution of rising expectations.
One huge advantage India has is the incredible amount of Indian talent outside India that sends their higher Western salaries back to India. If India builds the infrastructure and factories in India, they may come home. The danger there is they are already "rich" from working outside India, and it won't really be creating a new job for an Indian in India.
India is resilient and will slog through the problems. It is why the moon landing is so nice. It is a milestone that says India has the capabilities to advance. 💪

Population size don't matter much but its the quality (diversified skills) of the population and also the availability of the resources to support the population size matters the most. India lacks the resources to support such a huge population. The size of India's economy is approx $3 trillion compare to China's $16 trillion and US's $23 trillion with only 350 million people population size which makes per capita income the highest in the world for americans.

India kept missing the boat at the opportune time it seems.
With AI & Machine Learning set to displace the need for human workers in so many industries & countries, India will be left with a large number of unemployed uneducated or semi-educated people, which will be a recipe for disaster.
Add to that climate change woes that will push more and more people to the same "safe" land area that everyone will want to occupy as well as reduced food supplies.

India needs to start stabilizing its population growth if it wants to become more developed and prosperous. Population growth can improve an economy but only in terms of total output. If its GDP per capita isn't growing, it can't invest in quality education and create a skilled workforce because it doesn't have the extra money to do so. There are also consequences to increasing GDP solely by increasing population. It increases the cost of running the country which limits any gains in total GDP being used toward investing in development.

    1. Enforce mass sterilization and family planning and 1 child policy specially among a particular community (I don't have to mention)
    2. Have laws to incentivize women participation in workforce eg. if a restaurant hires a woman staff they will get a tax/gst discount depending on how many women are employed

This woman is extremely prejudice and mean towards China. Just about a month ago in one of her videos, she accused Chinese of being racist towards Indians, because the Chinese pointed out that it's the quality, not quantity, of the population that really matters. This implies that the Chinese think lowly and look down on Indians. Now she's saying the quality of the people matters, just like what the Chinese said. She tripped over herself!

Competition is immense in India. Resources are less compared to the size of population. But the irony is that political leaders are not in favor of population control of India due to vote banks. And some of the so called nationalists still supporting population growth, they are comparing it to that of advanced countries. Man...India and South East Asia are land of fertile people where population will never become stagnant like that of advanced countries. What we do need is proper awareness and implementation of a well devised population control policy so that every person can have a sustainable life.
