This how-to worked perfectly. Saved a ton of money by not having to take the car to the dealership. Thanks for posting and showing how easy it is to do in your own garage.
Hey man, thank you!! I’m an old school backyard mechanic and I had never had the pleasure of working with these electronic parking break systems. This video was very simple and straightforward and to the point. A lot of these newer/ish vehicles are just a motherF$&$! With all of the new “features” on them. Extremely helpful and made my day extremely easy! Both rears pads and rotors and both fronts pad swap in three hours and that was with the neighbor guy talking my ear off and asking dumb questions. Me also responding to said stupid questions 😂.
Also an oil change in those three hours. Excellent video! Very helpful! Thanks again man!
You saved me from a big headache. Although I used this video for a 2018 Honda CRV. I’ve never worked on anything newer than 2016. I was wondering why my c clamp wasn’t pushing the piston back in and it was because I didn’t tighten the thread in to set it back to factory. Thank you so much
Thank you buddy you answered my question about the scanner. I thought I needed a scanner to do this but manually you did it beautiful thank you.
Great video. Saved me from buying a E11 socket. The 9 worked perfect. A lot of people have over complicated this job. 👍👍👍👍💪
Thanks for the video. I watched a couple others just in case, and you were the only one I saw who did the parking brake correctly
Thank you so much for making this man. I'm about to replace my brakes for the first time ever, and I was a bit nervous about the whole process. But you explained it so well and I'm pretty confident in myself after watching this. Appreciate you my dude.
I performed the same procedure on my mom's 2019 Honda Accord, which has an electronic parking brake. However, her brake pads had worn down to the metal, necessitating a rotor replacement. I used a caliper push-back tool, and everything functioned correctly with no brake lights or issues. Soon, I'll be applying the same process to my friend's 2018 Honda Civic rear brake pads. I hope it works as smoothly as it did with my mom's 2019 Honda Accord. Hopefully, the brake light issue isn't inconsistent among some Hondas.
Best of luck we do many Hondas along with other makes we either remove the EPB model like seen or use a scanner to put it in service mode. I personally don't recommend trying to turn it in with out using one of those two methods.
That's cool, I almost went into a rotor change not thinking about the electronic braking mechanism. I always wondered how the electronic parking brake functioned and now I know. Glad I thought of looking into this, once that's done, its just business as usual with rotors and pads! Thank you!
Very well done video, followed it to a T and no brake lights came on and everything functions properly; thanks!
Thanks! You saved me from buying a E11. I’ll split the difference with you. Thanks again.
Phenomenal video! Nice work man!
Nice video, thanks I should be good to tackle this when the time comes.
Thank you Sir. Learnt alot from your video. I really do appreciate it 🙏 🎉
Do the pistons in these calipers not slightly spin as you push them back in?
Video was really helpful, very nice job.
Only one question/concern. Towards the second half of the video, when you start putting rotors back on, the audio seems to be about 30-seconds ahead of the video.
What if I turned the other way the piston came out how to get it back to its place?
Btw that spline drive is actually a perfect fit for an E10 external torx socket
Thanks sir
one silly question, may i know how could i ensure the electronic brake is off via changing the rear brake disc ?
When you jack up the car you should be able to freely turn the rear wheels by hand.
so, can I do the same on my 2018 Honda civic without the software? Just disconnect that actuator ? Is that (disconnecting actuator) that simulates what the software does ?
So I had my brake system light come on which is why ai changed out my rear brakes but tue light is still on do you think it well turn off over time?
If the light came on prior to the brake change its likely a fault somewhere would likely need scanned to see what the issue is
So I did this exact method and my e-brake parking light came on…can I go to the garage and have them shut it off? They feel great tho
Still better than many of my repair videos:)
Any idea why Honda wants to change the electric motor to caliper mounting screws?
Great video, Dan. You said Advanced pads aren't the best, but I have yet to buy a rotor that lasts longer than the pads without throbbing. What rotor do you suggest? Changing pads and rotors on a 2019 Civic.
is this the same for 2023 civic?
Can i do this without diconnecting the actuator power cable?..or does it have to ultimately have to be disconnected? will it affect the brake light to come on if I don't disconnect it?
I always disconnect the cable, but you can do it without disconnecting it.
I have a 2018 type r. Drilled out the screw as you said however, when I put the new rotor on it wobbles. How do I fix that??
I'm not sure what you mean by wobbles? Once you install the tire back on and torque it down it will secure the rotor into place.
After removing the brake caliper motor
Is the socket you tighten before pushing the piston 8 mm torque or 9 mm torque?
Would you wait to pump the brakes once all the pads are replaced or would you pump the brakes after each set of brake pads are replaced?
Did you unplug the electrical connector to the actuator? Some videos show that you should. If you dont unplug the actuator is there a risk of damaging anything? Thank you
So it really depends the connectors on these are prone to damage easily I usually leave them plugged in so there's less risk of damage to wires
Does leaving the actuator wire harness plugged in, do anything to the computer system?
It does not you're not making any changes to the actuator or pressure sensor. Once the caliper is set back into new pad/factory position, the actuator will spin the caliper/parking brake until the appropriate pressure is achieved
Could I have the name of the break pads and rotors you believe is best. I have a 2018 Honda civic
Oh wow so I don’t even need the special scan tool, & I have like 3 people that want me to do this job now time to make some easy money :-)
If you spin it the wrong way and the piston comes out further, how do you fix the problem?
Spin it the correct way lol if the piston has popped out and you can't get it to re seat you'll need to replace the caliper
Thanks for the vid. What specific breaks pad and rotor brand did you buy for the job? Im planning on doing this on my 18' civic sport. And also do you recommend doing this to all for when just the back 2 need to be replaced or just do what's needed? Also will putting the car in gear to park be ok? I have manual transmission.
We use duralast almost never have any issues with the golds or higher. As for all 4 it would depend on the wear typically the rear wear faster on the civics and yes leaving it in gear would be fine.
Do you need to replace the screw you drilled out of the rotor? Or will it be fine if you don’t?
No need to replace it they're only there to hold the rotors in place during thw assembly process
Will a brake piston retraction tool work as it rotates the piston clockwise? Or do you need to remove the EPB assembly and rotate the actuator shaft manually?
You have to either remove the EPB actuator like shown or use a scan tool with bi lateral controls to reset it. If you twist it in like an old school turn style caliper, it will damage the caliper/actuator
Just want to clarify, you have the car in park but don’t have the emergency break on?
Yes. How would you remove the brake if the parking brake was engaged? Just chock the wheels as well to ensure no movement.
How much would this cost if I take it to an auto shop, I need this done on my 2018 also, might just do it myself didn’t look complicated at all
I have to get mine done front and back and honda in Tarrytown, NY is charging me $1,200
$1200 for front and rear pads and rotors from a dealer is about right. I'd look for a smaller independent shop.
Selamlar fren kaliperi pistonu üzerindeki mil 8 torks mu yoksa 9 torks mu yoksa 7 torks mu
Great video, I have a 2018 Honda civic, I have never repaired a car in my life. Do you think I can try this? I am afraid of when something later not works during me driving on the highway…
If you're not mechanically inclined I would hire some one this is a bit more in depth
On the topic of retracting the electronic parking brake, I asked Google Bard how to do that, and it gave me the following steps.
_Here are the steps to retract the electronic parking brake mechanism on a 2018 Honda Civic:
Start the engine and press the brake pedal.
Hold the parking brake switch down for 5 seconds.
Release the parking brake switch.
Press the parking brake switch again and hold it down for 5 seconds.
Release the parking brake switch.
The electronic parking brake mechanism should now be retracted. You can then compress the caliper piston and replace the brake pads as described in the previous instructions._
Do you know if this works?
To the best of my knowledge, there is no onboard maintenance mode on honda. You need a scan tool with the ability to put it into service mode.
Do you know if this is the same for 2022 Civic SI ?
@@danthebrakeman ty sir , always did my own brake / rotors , never with a newer car with this electric E brake tho
We could not retract the brake piston of my vehicle's 2018 model Civic I-dtec sedan with the chassis diagnostic software. We retracted the piston in a similar way as you did and it works without any problems. The only thing I don't understand is that you broke the screw on the disk, we put the screw back and tightened it. You cut the screw, won't this be a problem?
Negative that screw is completely pointless it's only used to hold the rotor in place while the vehicle is going down the assembly line in the factory.
Great video. Torque values would’ve been helpful. Can’t seem to find consistent info online.
The caliper bracket 17mm bolt is 80ft lbs. The caliper Allen head bolts are 25ft lbs.
Great video Dan. Saved me a lot of money. One thing tho... you didnt pause video before resetting the piston. Lol. Audio instrustion was off by 10 seconds. How could you??!
Haha I know the audio was off it was my first attempt at a voice over still a work in progress 😅
Okay i just did this. Lets see how it works. Im wondering if the brake light will come on since i turned the eletronic brake 9mm screw so much.. lets find out
Update: it worked perfect with no issues. Thanks for the help =)
Should I do it on civic. 2023
I am motor bike mechanic
@@danthebrakeman changed the rotors yesterday got stuck removing the screw and I had to drill that screw . Tried with impact driver but didn’t work
Dealership quoted me 276 per wheel for rotor resurface I had to do for both wheels changed rotors to nee it cost me 89$ for front n rear
Do you turn the parking brake on or off before you start the whole process?
How may mile now replacement
Why don't you put the screws on the rotor
They're not needed once the vehicle leaves the factory. The sole purpose is to hold the rotor in place while going down the assembly line
I have had ep3 civics dc5 rsx ap2 s2k an 08 tl and the back brakes were so much easier without these stupid electronic e brakes. I have an 18 so I'm I'm not looking forward to doing brakes. These new cars are freaking stupid. Oh yeah I also had an o7 si.
There ain't nothing on that car that is "cheap" Maybe a steering wheel cover? lol I got a civic I know.. their stuff is way overpriced! especially from Honda dealership. I have to replace my two back rotors and pads as well, so thinking of doing it myself.
Dealership is always going to be overpriced. Honda parts are cheap in comparison to other makes
Thank you. I took my 2019 civic to a mechanic and I was told that was going to cost me 650 bucks. 1 hour late and 110 bucks in parts I was done. Saved 540.🎉😅 thank you
Nice work!
