Those background vocals sound pretty full considering its only 4 people in the band. Do you think that they maybe played along with a recording of the background vocals when they did live shows? Check out the chord progression at about 0:57. That sounds like more than 4 people to me. Even if they did sing along with backing tracks who cares. They are always amazing to me.
Hmm actually, no, they just put their 3 vocals (John never sang) over and over again, that's why they have stated that in some songs the tape had almost worn out. I'm certainly sure that they sang along some kind of guide vocal (obviously the guide vocal never makes it to the final take) because of some demos or "making of" that we have available.
