You’ve got a lot of great stuff there, Luke! Man with a Movie Camera is absolutely nuts and Clockers is a really sturdy work from Ol’ Spike. I also bought The Card Player (seen it once, didn’t like it) with the intentions of doing an Argento marathon for his new movie coming out this Fall. Placed a huge order and got 19 different films; can’t go wrong with Kino Lorber, the MVP of the physical media labels.
Oh gosh, how could I forget to mention Rocco and His Brothers. One of my all-time favorite films. Just so emotionally powerful and depressing. Scorsese owes a lot to this specific film. Visconti’s a master!
Whoa I didn't know he had a new movie coming out! I obviously knew about Gaspar's new film Vortex (still think it's crazy that Dario stars in that) but not that he was directing something new. We'll see how it turns out... lol. I actually really loved The Card Player though, but not because it's good. I laughed so hard, it's absolutely bonkers. The ending on the train tracks was so ridiculous. I should take a day off work soon to get caught up on some real good films though, films like Rocco and His Brothers. Glad to hear you praise that one. But yes, Kino Lorber lowkey rules
Love Abel Ferrara and Willem Dafoe collabs. I highly recommend their follow up film, Tomasso. It's super guerilla filmmaking, but has an emotional hook that a bigger film wouldn't capture. Think something similar to Sean Baker's films (I'm pretty sure there's a Q&A with Ferrara on the disc interviewed by Baker). Also your first pronunciation is correct Abe-L like Cain and Abel.
Thanks for the pronunciation tip Luke :) really love Sean Baker so that interview would be great to check out. I recall that Tommaso was coming out right around the time lockdowns were starting in 2020. One of the local independent cinemas was hosting digital screenings that I was interested in, but I never attended :/
I got a lot from the Indicator sale (my order arrived today!) so I've been back and forth on making a Kino sale order. There are always films I see on their site that I'm interested in or that I didn't know of before and peaks my interest! I love Nosferatu! I've seen it a few times now and still find it creepy. I'm pretty sure I prefer it to Universal's Dracula, though they definitely created their own entity/version of the character that has become how he's known in pop culture. I think Rocco and His Brothers is the only other title here I've seen, which was really good and has Alain Delon in it, who is great and he plays the main character in my favorite movie.
Kino Lorber is one of the only labels out there where I truly don't recognize like 80% of what they have, but that's awesome. Trying to decide if I should wait until October to revisit Nosferatu. I'm definitely in the mood now, but I think it'd be fun to watch Nosferatu and Vampyr again, and Universal's Dracula! Obviously that'd be a pretty fitting series for Halloween season haha. Which Delon film is your favorite? I hate to say that I've never seen him in a film!
@@lukemick Pleil Soleil, aka Purple Noon, is my favorite film!! And I think Le Samouraï and La Piscine would round out my top 3. Those are also great films with a great performance from Delon. Ahh... and L'eclisse, lol. That one is a favorite film of mine but doesn't standout as a Delon film like the others I mentioned. I feel like that one you kind of have to be in the right mood for and I know it can rub people the wrong way because of a particular scene with Monica Vitti in blackface. And all 4 of those films are in The Criterion Collection, btw :)
Also, I'd say if you're in the mood for Gothic vampire films now, go for it! There's Christmas in July, so you can have a Halloween in April/May, lol!
It's been years since I've seen Baxter. I remember liking it quite a bit though I was genuinely surprised at how dark it was even though it's centered around a murderous dog.
Excited to see just how dark things get with the Target dog front and center 😈
Can’t speak for most of those, but I have seen The Card Player. It’s basically if Argento made an episode of CSI. More mundane than his classic work, probably for budget reasons. Definitely not as bad as the Letterboxd score would suggest, but it’s no Deep Red. There’s a lot of cops huddled around boxy low res 2004 monitors watching pixelated video poker play out, but it has it’s moments for sure and Liam Cunningham brings a lot of integrity to it.
Watched The Card Player last week! And kind of loved it in a guilty pleasure kind of way haha. I love how at one point they win the game, the girl is released, they throw a party at the station, AND THEN they question her about her abduction. The whole flick cracked me up
