I loved this. When an old employer of mine actually stopped paying me and made excuses but still expected me to continue working without pay, I said some pretty similar things, and was promptly removed from the HR office

I used to be in a bar band. So many people were very comfortable about asking us to work for free.
"Spoiled is having people work for you for free. Spoiled is being able to afford to work for free!" is what I thought she should also say while watching it yesterday.

Liz saw her friend was struggling to pay off her loan debt and pay her rent and literally heard Emily say "I need a Job. A real one" and her response was "Let me get her an interview for an unpaid internship. Because that's what you do for people who have bills to pay"? Talk about delusional.

Exactly what I said after watching this. I saw this scene first and thought I’d check the movie out. I was pissed when I found out her friend set her up for the interview. She could’ve at least told her it was unpaid and leave to her if she’d like to make that choice.
Maybe she was quiet about it being unpaid so that it wouldn’t ruin a facade she was putting out about herself.
The fake user friend I was offered volunteer work whilst my so called friends on full wages 😂
The millennial experience all boiled down into one minute. I cried after this scene.
Hell it's the working class American experience now. Be it a burger flipper, a truck driver, ,ditch digger or tech support call center person.

Sadly it's hard to even get an unpaid internship at prestigious companies. I've seen internships given not because of the candidate's qualifications, but because the company valued the candidate's parents.

As an elder millennial who entered the workforce during the 2008 economic crisis, this is what it was like for every entry level position. I wish I would’ve had the wherewithal to realize how messed up it was for them to expect you to work for free. It’s promising to see that this new generation is really good about calling that kind of stuff out.
Oh yes, when employers had the upper hand they had no problem saying “just be thankful you have a job.”
Then when the job market loosened up it become “No one wants to work for us!” 😆

I feel like the term “quiet quitting” was created by an older millennial that got jealous seeing Gen Z assert better boundaries than we could at their age.

If you have a skill you get hired, other people are looking for you. But if you have no skill and you are assertive and good with boundaries, what do you do? Live off your mom's paycheck? Seriously? Do you think just because you're assertive you're going to earn money? It makes no sense what you just said. I'm a millennial and I assert myself just fine by proving my worth and then asking for fair compensation. It never fails. As long as you're worth it. If you're not, you go to unpaid internships to LEARN. It's not a school and even schools cost money.

I was offered a job as a project manager at a startup when I was 24, I’m 30 now btw. It was my first corporate job after working in customer service since I was 17. The payment was no improvement over what I earned in CS, but I decided to give it a try. I ended working from 8 am to 10 pm + attending to various events during the weekends, and that was for the first 3 weeks. So on my 4th week after attending to a big event on Sunday I handed the business owner a bunch of receipts for gas, accommodation, food and beverages, all expenses from the events and he had the nerve to “not understand why I was putting those on his desk”, and argued that he paid me enough to cover for my own expenses while attending to their events. I could hold my laughter, he was barely paying me above the minimum wage. I turned around and left forever, no goodbyes, no letter, no nothing.
Honestly, if a company expects you to attend events in what should be your free time that's work and you should be getting paid to be there, but getting expenses paid or reimbursed is the next best thing.

@@pixel6854 You are totally right about that. Most states require the company to compensate the employees for either miles driven or for any mode of transportation to a company event as it is work related.

Asking someone who graduated high school many years ago to work full time for no pay and comparing it to a position where you got paid is incredibly tone deaf.
Asking ANYONE to work full time without pay is deplorable, period.

Depends on the position. Lot of positions in creative arts, performing arts, etc are very competitive so they have the ability to have people work for no pay first and then pull them on board, like what happened here. My friend worked in TV working for free running coffee then worked his way up. Clearly she was in major debt and needed cash asap, so this wasn’t for her. If she didn’t like it she could have recused herself more politely, because now she has no chance of working there.

This is the point of the movie. The only difference between this scam and the scam Emily was up to was some violence.

No. She was already a criminal through her own actions which closed many career doors. She didn't finish her education because sob - blah, blah, blah - story. She owed money for her education. An education she hoped would lead to her enjoying a good life. When she failed she blamed others. The usual selfish mindset all too prevalent in today's Western world.
What can you have been doing not to notice that seriously injured Youcef's fate was of little concern to her when she took the money for herself and abandoned him?
It's all about her.

I enjoyed the film. It's the mindless comments excusing her behaviour when there is no excuse. It's just her choice to become a criminal, not because she's jobless, nor homeless, nor starving, but just because she believes she deserves more. She doesn't. The West is the home of opportunity. There are no refugees fleeing the West to find better lives in the corrupt and dictatorial countries which make up the majority of the world. If you can't make it here, you can't make it anywhere.
This scene is so perfect, and such a massive subversion for the foil of Liz's character. Up until now, Liz was built up to be the "ideal" version of what Emily could have been if she'd just not gotten into trouble and finished her degree. Even if Emily had finished her degree, she still would have had the debt, and no way to work at a "prestigious" firm as an intern for no pay. The system wants you to believe that everything is your fault, when in reality it's just heavily rigged in favor of those who start out with money. Those same people then go on to believe that they just worked harder than others to get where they are instead of realizing their massive financial advantages.
Not just financial advantages but also emotional support. Most people like the Liz character came from money AND had a family willing and able to emotionally support and encourage them. Maybe even let them live at home while they work an internship so they don’t have to worry about rent. Somehow we get the sense that Emily had none of that.
People often fail to realize how lucky they are to have a supportive family in their life, whether that is financial, or emotional, and in some cases both. The person who has neither is going to struggle no matter what. I know because I have lived it.
I know so many people who were born on third base but they think they hit a home run!
Also demonstrates why university degrees and education are the greatest SCAM perpetrated among US students today.

Ask "How do I eat? Where do I sleep? Shower, wash clothes and get transportation? How can I get medical care? That's what I need a job for. If you cant provide that, I can't work for you, because I'll die of starvation." That's wage theft.
And most employer types would pedantically respond to all that with some variation of a "bootstraps" speech. (Try Googling that term, btw-- it's based on a satirical premise that can't actually happen.)

I'd never seen Aubrey Plaza act, but that was such a powerful scene. The acting is great, but it's also brutally realistic.
Liz referred Emily to that job. But what Liz failed to tell Emily was that this was an internship. You can't blame Emily for getting upset.
Yeah, you can. If you don't have any skillset to offer yet, then STFU and thank them for giving you the opportunity to acquire a skillset that you can market later for a paid job. Emily is obviously too dumb to ask Liz if it's paid or not. No wonder dumb people put themselves in situation that makes them more frustrated.

There are plenty of people who do that - but they come from wealthy families who cover their expenses. These internships are only for upper-class kids.

I did a very part time (once a week) non paying art related internship for a few months as a condition of the certificate program I was in. Among the interns, the only one who got chosen to stay on as an employee is the one who needed the job least. Yes, she did a good job. But so did many others who were passed over in favor of someone who had less experience.
Most of the people passed over were people of color in a company where most people were white. The person chosen was white. The wealthy always hire and prefer each other.
The art industry perpetuates inequality while constantly saying how much it cares about inclusion. I was never able to find a job directly related to that field because even the most entry level positions required a master’s degree, which besides taking on massive loans, I have no way to pay for. The system is set up to keep low income people out.

When society is structured in a way where you can't earn a living through honest means, crime is the only reasonable resort to turn to.

It hits home to anyone in the creative industry who’s ever been offered a work for free internship or who has had to chase a client for payment. How some people sleep at night… I mean, even minimum wage is better than no pay at all!

This scene and the opening scene of the movie where the interviewer lies about not looking at her criminal history only to then say he did, and asking probing question about an incident which is clearly traumatic. These two scenes amidst the situation Gen Zs are in with mounting debts and low paying jobs, to me were the highlights of the movie
Well, if Gen Z wasn't afraid of actual work they could have gone to community College to learn a trade, such as plumber or carpenter, saved up money and gone to state college. Millennials and Gen Z are the laziest generations to ever be born.

When I was in university, I got a 3 month accounting internship. Little did I know it was completely unpaid. I thought I was gonna learn accounting instead i had to learn how to attract clients and close deals. The managers would earn commissions of my client sales. After 1 week I gave them a Bs excuse I couldn't continue it anymore. Then I filed an anonymous report saying the internship was a scam. A couple months later, the company folded. ❤
definitely Aubrey's best performance. She shows maturity and acting skills. She projected the character to a real dimmension. I loved her exchange and articulation with both interviewers,,.......I lover her even more.
But can we talk about the Jersey accent she’s doing. I liked her performance a lot but as someone who spends the majority of their life in Newark I really can’t get passed the cartoony nj accent

Which is so sad because prior to this scene I was like “yes! Take this interview and get out of the crime business.”
The boss is played by Gina Gershon, who brilliantly played the cynical, diabolical leading lady in the notorious Showgirls (1995). What a brilliant casting choice.
Shereally played the part well and I hope to God sh'es far kinder than this self entitled deluded grandstanding... .snot she's playing.
She also played a very funny parody of Paula Abdul in the American Duos episode of Psych.

The worst thing about it is that if she takes the intership, works for six months and gets a paid offer, it would probably be very low, since getting paid anything is a lot more than nothing.

If this internship were as competitive as the hiring manager claimed, she wouldn’t have felt the need to belittle the candidate. Just wish the candidate well and move on.

You've never told truth to power before, have you? The hiring manager got all salty because Aubrey's character stood up to her. That will turn insecure people who don't deserve their position into petulant dismissive squawking power trippers every time.

Thats what happens if the boss doesn't like you for whatever reason even for some personal reason unrelated to work. Unpaid internships at a major company are such a scam

They will dangle that "we MIGHT hire at the end of your time!" carrot, work you as hard as an actual employee, then decide you didn't pay enough attention to Kristy's new baby or kiss Jana's butt the right way. Then it's "Goodbye, sucker" there too.
The best was what she said at the end of this clip. Internships are only for the spoiled, because if you can afford to work an 8 hour day for free, clearly you have an advantage over the general population who actually has things to pay every month.

The main issue is the friend didn’t tell her that the job was unpaid. So she embarrassed herself in front of her boss and possibly lost a friend. 🤦🏻♂️
Once I had a woman ask me for an unpaid job to keep her skills up-to-date while she was getting her working permit as an immigrant. I refused to not pay her and found a way to do it so that it didnt cause her problems withh immigration. I wouldn't have felt confortable not paying someone. Eventually she became a full-time employee.

This scene should be categorized under "documentary" or "non-fiction".
Two things I found interesting in the scene. The first is the boss lady tried using the gender card to justify asking for free labor (which is insulting to every woman who had to fight for her place). The second thing I found interesting is that the applicant was seeking WORK! The thing millennials are constantly accused of not wanting to do. And the boss had the nerve to accuse her of entitlement. When in reality the boss was wasting her time, time she could’ve spent at an interview for a paid job. And as for that nonsense about experience, that’s just her dangling a carrot in the hopes that she’ll get complacent free labor for six months. Per that logic you may as well sign up for an MLM scheme.

Don’t get a union. If you get the wrong union the union will just take your money and use big words in newsletters. Then the union won’t ever do anything and if you insist they do they will treat you like an inappropriate piece of refuse and try to make you feel ashamed for asking. They are about $14 a week. My tv channels are more reliable.

I got paid on my first internship. Not sure why anyone would work for free. If I wanted to work for free, I would be doing volunteer work.
Even with volunteer work, the can on occasion be paid with honorariums or receive perks like free meals.

You can tell it was Emily's temper that earned her that criminal record.
This was actually a good movie. I was pleasantly surprised and I even had to go look up who Aubrey Plaza was.

We are living through another moment in history when power must be taken back from the powerful. The audacity of those at the top to think that only their company/life/agenda/profit (or whatever) matters. They have the power because they set up a system where they are holding all the cards. Want a job? Do whatever I tell you. Maybe I'll pay you. If you're lucky. Don't want to do that? NEXT!!! They know the odds are in their favor. What gives me hope is that we the workers are finding out ways of exposing it's they who need us, not the other way around. If more and more people show them that their control is only local and limited at best, maybe we can improve the system in our favor for once.
Aubrey is such a great actress...I love watching her..I really hope she gets more challenging roles in the future..she can do funny and deadly serious...I see Oscars in the near future.good luck.

It's not often you see a woman showing the same level of self-respect as a man. That's what makes this scene so noticeable, I think.
I worked at a bunch of unpaid internships in the 90s. One was for Barbara Kopple, a noted documentary filmmaker who made two Oscar winning documentaries about worker’s rights and unions. There must have been ten interns in her office not getting paid. The irony is brilliant.
Reminds me of a job interview i went to where the manager had nerve to suggest that i look at the operation of the company and there would be a competition, whoever had best improvement ideas would get the job. I stood up and told the guy I lift a lot of weights. After that, there was no more talking and I left.
I think she is gonna be an Oscar nominee soon 😉

I was an unpaid intern in college (plus another paying job) which sucked but I got valuable experience that landed me my first job. I wouldn't do that again unless I got paid something. Interns should get something in return for their efforts.
It's understandable someone in that situation would fall into the unpaid intern trap, as the prospect of gaining relevant experience for FREE looks pretty good while in the midst of paying a school for your education.
@@jeffn9952 I went to a small college in a town of about 30k so there were not many intern opportunities so if you were lucky to get one it helped with getting a job out of college.
I got an intern position while working a part time job, I quit after two days. It just isn't feasible to work for free if you come from a low income family.
Funny thing is all these no pay/low pay places for IT work pretty much collapsed over night during the pandemic and I got a real job in a computer assembly factory.

Living in a country where unpaid labour is illegal and warching how USA does business is an unreal feeling. 😮
I've had a few times this has happened. I just thank them and then walk out. No one should or have to work for free. We all got bills to pay.

Aubrey grabs me in all of her movies and doesn’t let me go until the end. Except I chickened out and couldn’t finish the Black Bear and it was gone off my streaming when I got the courage to finish it. Real life is definitely scarier than fiction. They better bring her back on SNL!

I actually thought this movie was brilliant Aubrey Plaza was amazing the script superb.I was expecting a B grade movie and was pleasantly surprised loved the social commentary in the story .

This was one of my favorite films last year, I'm a writer and was working at a bookstore for a ridiculous pay, and even had to sell some LSD in the down low to get by, so this movie hit close to home for me, and Aubrey Plaza is just fire in my heart too
Never Ever take an intership that does not pay - you are better off bartending or waiting tables - you will learn many business lessons that you can apply when looking for a "real job" and go home with money in your pocket

Great movie! I really enjoyed this one.
I think the interviewer was very upfront about being unpaid, to be honest. As an IT person I had situations where before I could even go in front of the interviewer, I had to do some work obviously unpaid work to get something working that's obviously production code. It's not a test to see if you know how to program with simple exercises but rather full blast production code they want me to modify to make something work or add a new feature. I learned my lesson about doing that after one time spending a few days doing it, they say I did very well and then never hearing from them ever again and seeing my changes on their website. Going forward I would just ignore anyone asking for such a large scale exercise.
They had definitely cheated you. They deserve jail.
@@davidjamesshaverYeah I suppose I could have went before a judge and demanded the hourly wage at the rate I was asking for. I did have good enough proof and emails that explain the whole thing and me giving them the code.
Aubrey Plaza gives something new every few seconds she's on camera.
Is that what it is? She is certainly mesmerizing. I remember noticing that quality in Marlene Dietrich and also Bette Davis. It's like you can see their thoughts through their faces. And there is so much going on you can't look away. They draw you right into the movie. With this scene I felt like I was in the room with them.
Huge fan. This was the highlight of a great movie. Representing American folks struggling to pay for debts. And the spoiled a hole boss dissing her off …… Very representative of real America.
