    Sony has been killing it with the G Master lenses lately. My amateur skills can't justify this lens but hopefully they come out with an updated 50mm f1.8. I'm hoping for the same quality as the 85mm f1.8, just in a 50mm version.

    Just picked one up a few days ago. Literally nothing to complain about except the focus breathing. That said, I'm using it on an A7IV and it has a new breathing correction feature and this lens is supported. It does apply a very slight crop, but breathing is basically completely eliminated. Not sure if the SIII or A1 already have this, but if not hopefully they get it soon.

    Great lens! People sometimes critique Sony about the size of the mount, but on the other hand, it looks like it helps in have a super-compact kit, especially when it comes to the lens. I don't see anything as compact as Tamron zooms (17-28, 28-75, 28-200, 70-180) or Samyang "Tiny but mighty" primes on Canon/Nikon/Panasonic. Some of those Samyang primes are even smaller than lens mount on Canon/Nikon :)

Without a hint of irony or awareness, or addressing the obvious contradiction, the list included the Canon EF mount which is about the same size as the FE mount, and the Pentax K mount which is *smaller*.

    Stellar sharpness at 1.2f across the frame means that the bokeh and 3d separation is not that great. Majority of new design lenses suffer from this trait, Sigma ART series were the first ones to show this...
    11 aperture blades are a good thing though, for 1.2f 11 is probably a minimum in order to make those bokeh balls round from 2f to maybe f4

    It's impressive that they made it not only smaller and lighter, but also cheaper than the Canon and Nikon alternatives, especially since people were saying it would be much harder to make these lenses for the E-mount.

      @@panzer3279 This guy likes talking out his ass, if you look at Christopher Frost's reviews of all three lenses the Sony is actually a hair sharper than either the Canon or Nikon in the center and is significantly sharper in the corners. Sony's also has slightly better contrast wide open.

      Canon made a 50mm f1.0 in 1987, what's there to be jealous of? The Canon RF 50mm f1.2 is optically superior to this tiny glass.

    • @colinjudge1261
      @colinjudge1261 Před 3 lety +4

      @@panzer3279 The f/1.0 is no longer in production, as of twenty years ago, which probably tells you a little bit about how useful that lens actually was. What makes you say that the RF f/1.2 is optically superior to the Sony? This lens has only just launched, but by all accounts it's optically fantastic too. What's there to be jealous of? It's lighter, smaller, and cheaper too. I wouldn't kick the RF lens out of bed, but it's possible to admire lenses from other manufacturers.

    Very nice lens. Great optical characteristics, aside from the terrible focus breathing. I like the very sharp look with a creamy enough bokeh. The price is not low but appropriate (considering the competition) and the relative small dimensions and lightness.
    How does this feel to use for street photography? Is it fatiguing on the long run with an a7R IV? Is the autofocus actually quick and reliable in a chaotic street situation?
