- Ion Fury pushes the ancient Build engine - powering classics like Duke Nukem 3D - to its very limits, but fundamentally, how difficult can a port to current-gen consoles be? The answer turns out to be more complex than you might think. John Linnemans checks out the PS4, Xbox One and Switch versions of the game, addresses the frame-rate concerns and goes in-depth on the surprisingly challenging process of delivering these console conversions.

"Enter the Konami code to uncap the frame rate" is the greatest string of words I've heard all year.
It’s kind of insane that this entire game is running off of a single CPU thread on Switch... I’ve noticed that battery life is great and it actually manages to stay close to 60 FPS quite often on my Lite. I can’t really complain at all as I get to play this beautiful looking game on a handheld.
The game is like 400mb on Pc xD
I thought it’s only 30 FPS?!
@@Delb9891 if you watch the video, he says to input the konami code during gameplay and it will unlock the framerate, but it has mixed results. locked 60 in some areas, but other areas it's all over the place. It's probably a secret feature they added just in case a switch pro ever happens.
Not really Duke3D ran awesome on a Pentium! 133 with a s3 trio64 with UniVBE .exe running .
iinkshade I still prefer having this unlocked option on the current switch since it stays at or very close to 60 almost all of the time, which I prefer over locked 30. Even then, locked 30 didn’t get in the way of gameplay, 60 is just a nice cherry on top. I’ve never had an issue with 30 FPS gaming, but will take more frames when offered.

I love how technically in depth this is, imagine DF revisiting their GTAIV tech analysis(the game that started it all for DF) but going all out with it.
They should focus on the difference of high and v.high shadows
there's no way they figured it all this info themselves, they had to get some kind of insight from developers
It's good to hear how the devs tackled and figured out workarounds for a lot of the perf issues. Would appreciate similar content being covered more frequently ☺️
It seems like there's some weird acceleration zone right at the edge of the analog stick that sends your aim flying off if you hit it accidentally. It feels completely unnatural to me. I know the game is supposed to be fast but I'd rather just up the sensitivity. Really hope they patch in the option to turn that off.
It sounds like some kind of mouse acceleration algorithm is being applied to the sticks. Maybe it's just that they routed to stick input through the old mouse input system.
"Analog stick" well there's your problem.
Very unsettling, but that's been a common thing in games(Halo, Borderlands, Serious Sam, Killing Floor, Gears of War, and others are just a few examples using the mechanic). It's _supposed_ to try to make it so you can turn quickly while keep a slower 'general' turn speed, but all it's ever done is make aiming more inconsistent. It's a shame it's still being used so often, and still without options.
@@mygaffer
That's like dismissing a mouse because the game forces mouse acceleration and smoothing.
Setting the aiming up poorly isn't the fault of the stick.
That sounds almost exactly like the aiming problem on Duke Nukem Forever. I tried that game on ps3 a few years back just to see how bad it was, and strafe aiming was almost impossible. Never understood how that could be messed up.

Ion Fury is an absolutely fantastic game, and it really brings a smile to my face seeing that school of FPS design being kept alive in a refined form. The way these games play is inherently tied to the technology used to build them.

This is why I appreciate this game so much. You can see the passion the devs have for this engine, tweaking it to get running on consoles.
Yes indeed. A 20 year old modified build (duke nukem, blood, etc) engine. This game is classic and straight 🔥. 3DRealmz still in the game amazing!
I’ve been looking forward to this one for a LONG time. Seeing this engine on a switch is just... bizarre lmao. Thanks for making this video. Thanks for doing everything you do, John!
I see this sentiment a lot. How so-and-so graphically intensive game is a surprise on Switch. Which is weird. I get it for games like Wolfenstein, Doom, and Witcher 3, but the Vita had XCOM , Uncharted Golden Abyss, and Killzone Mercenary. The Switch is way more powerful than the vIta. The Switch’s reputation for being a potato is a little unfair.
Really great video. I think it's very interesting, if not even important, to highlight how what appears to be a really simple port can still be quite a challenge
Build engine was single core and had terrible optimization

So much this
Ah yes I was hoping John would cover this. I have a Ryzen 2600, 16gb RAM, and a RTX 2060, and when this game launched it gave me bizarre performance issues, so I was disappointed and a little confused. I was keeping an eye out on the console releases to see if maybe they would, inexplicably, perform better than it did on my pc. I was heartened by the Xbox One X gameplay shown in the video, especially after John mentioned the timing issue will be patched. However, I just fired up the game on my rig to see if performance has improved, and it ran buttery smooth. It's pretty much everything I wanted it to be, so the PS4 and Xbox releases are probably redundant for me.
On a side note, something mentioned in the video piqued my curiosity, so I tested it and I can confirm that the controller support feels very strange on pc as well, so I think there is something the devs just aren't grasping and I hope they can fix it for the console players who are stuck with it. The acceleration curve is a bit extreme, and although you can probably get used to it, it definitely doesn't feel natural. I'm perfectly happy with the M+K setup, but console buyers will want to be aware of it before making a purchase.
I was considering picking this one up on the Switch to have it on the go, but I am going to wait and see if those performance hitches and control issues can be patched out.
Thanks again for another helpful and timely video!
Great video, been looking forward to this.
No wonder audio is generally uncompressed on consoles if it takes a toll on CPU otherwise. Fascinating look into what should seemingly be the easiest port job ever but ended up requiring a ton of smart workarounds. Keep up the great work as always!

John, did they comment on bringing this optimizations to the PC version, expanding the range on CPUs that could play the game smoothly? Like laptops and ultra portables?
Is there realy a problem on PC?
Ok i have a 3800X but the game cap is 240 fps and that is what i see a locked 240 fps.
The cpu must be realy old too have problems to achive 60 fps.
Singelcore ist importent for the game and too get lower than 60 fps your cpu must be 4 times slower
in singelcore.
I realy want too see this game on a core2duo. Can it run Ion Fury?
I would definitely want to know the feasibility of using this work to further optimize the PC version. Not only to reduce the footprint and increase framerate even higher, but hey maybe I wanna run this game on my toaster someday!
The optimizations like converting the scripts to C++ and the audio tweaks probably won't be ported. The script engine makes things easy to mod and removing that would remove a feature. And there's not much reason to use a WAV on PC as audio decompression is not very taxing with modern CPUs (nor with most modern consoles although they needed to squeeze every last performance out of these mobile-based processors for this engine). However if the original devs are okay with the modified engine tweaks for batching draw calls along with a second thread for doing render calls, those could make it. The problem is how much are you actually making it a new engine and not using the classic Build Engine like they originally aimed for?
@@JadigertheReal "Core2duo"

@@JadigertheReal > Is there realy a problem on PC?

I suppose, on Polymost there is no issue; but then there's the Polymer renderer, adding dynamic lighting, etc. Sure the game doesn't have it out of the box, but you never know with fan mods.
And then there's the PolymerRTX renderer. Yes, someone is actually working on a raytracing renderer for eDuke32; the sad part is, the guy likes to work alone, and he's got other stuff to do, and so he rarely finishes any of his fan-work; and you can't get the renderer anywhere, and given his track record it's likely never coming out. But you can think someone else, perhaps a group of people will get to work on and finish a RTX renderer for eDuke32; and there's a damn good possibility especially trying to raytrace a flat sprite, eDuke32 being more than 20 years old and still based upon single threat computations is going to become a major issue getting it to work.
There's something to be said for completely overhauling eDuke32 with modern multi-core multi-threaded based code; and to differentiate it from old legacy eDuke32 to run on older computers, one could call the modern multi-core based version of the engine, eDuke64!

This really is a fantastic game. Interesting little story about my experience with the game too: I purchased and first played the game in July 2020. And I just couldn't get into it. I just felt bored and uninterested playing through the first few maps. However, I had just broken up with a serious girlfriend just a few days before that and I admit I was mind-numbingly depressed and heart-broken at the time. I was smart enough to realize: "I don't think I can blame the game. I think I'm just really fucked up in the head right now because of this breakup and that's preventing me from enjoying things as I normally would."
Fast-forward to just a few months ago... Time had healed the wounds and I was over that heartbreak. I decided to fire the game up again on Steam and give it another try. I was HOOKED from the very opening. Whenever I played, I always had to force myself to turn the game off eventually because I had other things to do. Such an incredible, immersive, and well-crafted game in every way. Sure enough: I was correct in assuming that being depressed was the cause of my lack of enjoyment with the game. I'm glad I had the presence of mind to not blame the game and eventually gave it another chance. It really is a gem.
Sorry for the wall of text and rambling about my personal life. Just wanted to share my experience with the game.

Give it time...
It's still shocking that even with those inefficiencies in the engine, that modern consoles, especially Switch, cannot just brute force it. The team did a very good job optimizing what they could, and your input improved a game that would have likely stuttered for good. Leave it to Digital Foundry to look into problems that developers didn't even know they had!
I think they knew about the issue and had it fixed before DF contacted them.
Also, the Switch CPU is the issue here as it's actually much weaker than the Jaguar-based cores in the other consoles (which is surprising to me because I thought they would be similar being both older mobile-spec processors). It just can't handle the old engine's single-thread demands.
Nothing suprising about Switch, that hardware is trash
It just highlights how amateur the development team is.
It's cause they use a single core rather than multiple cores. Remember build was made in the 90s before multi-core CPUs were a thing.
Pretty sure they could do 60fps on Switch if they converted the engine to use the GPU and multi cores.
@@MasterMayhem78 they set out to use the original engine that Duke Nukem 3D used (with the 'newer' improvements added after) to keep that aesthetic from the limitations of the original engine. That's so uncalled for to trash the dev team for it.

What about implementing these fixes to the PC version to give it a higher performance with low end PCs
Duke Nukem had an entirely different build for each console. Saturn definitely took the cake for best port, being built from the ground up in true 3D, same with the N64 version. Hell, the Saturn port of Doom had development issues where they had to scrap progress on the build they were making and rush out a version that just ran Doom in Software mode - it was a slide show that ran at 10fps. Consoles back then were each so wildly unique in how they worked compared to PCs or even eachother lol, so it was to be expected.
Fantastic video John!

Ok now i understand why the first time i played this game on my crap laptop it almost exploded... i had to change some settings to make it work properly.. makes total sense now!! thanks for this amazing technical review
This is a really interesting case study. Hearing they had to implement texture atlasing and significantly reduce draw calls is something you run into pretty quickly when working on contemporary games, but that's because poly counts get so high. It's not like the Switch can't push out significantly more polygons than what's in this game at 60 fps. But those draw calls become a bottle neck very quickly. That said, it's all relative. 3000 isn't too bad on PC from my experience (likely due to legacy needs, fittingly enough), but if the architecture is more reliant on specific limitations to balance other enhancements I can definitely see performance issues coming out of left field.
Bro, xbox one x, ps4 pro, switch, pc is very unplayable ion fury Day one. It have nothing to do cpu usage. Ion fury is huge fucked up game code. They need to update game code fix, its very funny digital foundry said ion fury use cpu usage and Hardware limited, it make no sense.

Switch's 1080p60 mode seemed quite alright - Nifty they kept it in through the Konami Code. The mid-gen refreshes doing 4K60 on this = not a first i reckon, but for a shooter, it might just be.
PS4 and XBO doing 1080p60 is honestly more impressive on the XBO side of things because of its slightly reduced spec.
Impressively, i was amazed that General Arcade went with Polymost for this - Seeing as IF on PC is recommended mostly to play in ''Classic''. Good old Polymost. Even today Ken Silverman's original code powers new worlds (Creator of Polymost some 15-16 years ago).

I wouldn't have thought that it would be difficult to get this running on consoles but considering all the modifications done to the engine and everything else they've done to the game on a scope that is bigger than what was possible in the 90's on these engines, it's quite understandable why it was a difficult task and it was well explained in the video on why the task was difficult, especially on consoles with the limited cpu cycles.
Can't wait for that update
Couldn’t they drop the switch resolution to 900p to deliver a solid 60fps? After all it looks like it almost hits it at 1080p
Its probably a cpu bottleneck. Still surprised that switch can't handles 60 FPS
@@onizuka4534 ive been playing this on my Galaxy s6 at 60fps and 800x600
@referral madness
Don't mind him he is clearly drunk.
I would if Rich with his infamous OC Switch and testing would make a difference if that were applied whilst playing Ion Fury?
I am legit curious.
It's not a GPU related issue. Dropping the resolution won't give any returns on framerate.
It's interesting to watch the ResetEra cry-bullies trying to force John to do something he obviously doesn't want to do. I wonder if he's gonna break.
Gotta love their "make a statement" or else mentality.
What fuckin' phonies.
What happened? All the comments are mentioning resetera but I can't find what actually happened
@@straxan Ion Fury devs made a joke, which some snowflakes assumed was Homophobic (putting bottle of shampoo or parfume called OGAY in the game).
Also, they made some statements on a forum that mutilating kids in depression, on a chance they might be transsexuals, is not helpful. Of course it was deemed as a horrid hate crime against trans people.
John didn't know about this drama, and as soon as he posted review on RetardEra he was attacked by aborigines who lusted for his blood for the "wrong think". John apologized, but I hope he will get his spine back and won't submit to their insanity.
5:22 the way John said that, makes it sound like he knows more than he is allowed to say
Good to hear we are getting a phisical copy with this one and not being scammed by limited run like we did with streets of Rage 4.
Runs flawlessly on PS5!
Will they be porting some/all of those changes to PC?
Great Vid
Detail, you can use the Steam control setting to use the analog stick as a mouse and add settings like response curve, deadzone, sensitivity and have a more comfortable joystick aim on the PC, the developers could use a similar solution to solve this problem on consoles.
It's really unfortunate that those options aren't default in games. Those should have been staples over a decade ago.
Super silly too that you can get better controller support on PC, and get better support with outside programs.
