I'd work 1 day a week at a charity clinic and cherry pick the cases I want to do.
Considering that I'll be 39 when I graduate dental school, I better have a REALLY busy year lol
Hahahaha
Lol
may I ask why you started so late ? I'm genuinely very interested in your journey.
@@JR-hh8js I was a paramedic for 16 years before making the career change to dentistry.
@@tf6766 what made you want to go into dentistry? I am a dental hygienist and i really want to go to dental school. Just worried about the debt
Retiring early sounds like a good dream but trust me its hard to walk away from a busy practice. Its over forty years since I started Dental school and I am in my early sixties. Some things you may not be considering....Being a dentist affords one a modicum of prestige and a purpose in life. You also get real good at it after doing it for so many years. Also you have developed long term relationships with many patients who have come to depend on you and really fear your leaving. Sooner or later you have to go but forty is real early to walk away.
well put chaim
Wow! Thank you for this comment. I’m 43 dentist USC grad 06, Los Angeles. This struck home. I know I’m behind being in LA, compared to other much more lucrative states such as TX , TN, FL, NV, GA, AZ etc. I like the dentistry part but not the politics or what comes after. It is physically hard on our bodies (necks, back, eyes, head, brain) and mentally stressful too. We have to hear all the patients problems all the time. But I see it as if God has called me to do this line of work and so I am doing God’s bidding and will for my life. Not only to help myself but more importantly to help those in need because he has placed these patients in my hands for a purpose.
I'll soon be 40 and I'm still trying to get into dental school. So hopefully I'll be able to retire by 70.
The last story brought me to tears. Thank you for sharing
:)
This is awesome. I've never heard that fishing parable before, but it makes you think about what you want the day to day of your life to actually be like. Great way to give more depth to your goals.
You've nailed it again buddy! Semi retire doing the parts of dentistry I love by the age of 40 and not have to worry about financials and being content with what I have
the dream
Thank you Joel! this is so informative and inspiring! especially the last part 🙏
I love how honest and personable you make these videos! Quality overload for sure!!
ty!
Awesome video. Keep em coming, they relieve some of the stress I have
😊
Wow ! That was amazing ! It was not what I was expecting but the end story 🙏🏼 BOOM
Amazing video and invaluable advice. Thank you so much for creating content like this. From Sudbury!
👋 Northern friend
Loved last part 🤩🤩
Very well said!
Great video!
Love your channel, keep up the great content!!!
ty!
This video and this entire channel is literally everything I’m interested in bundled in one 😍 🔥 🔥🔥
🙏 means a lot Raheel
Hi Joel, I had an idea for a video that I think a lot of people would appreciate. You could make a video on how to choose a remote location and what to look out for when looking for one of these "middle of nowhere" areas
good idea Luke! will add it to the idea list :)
Thanks 👍
Hey Joel, dig your channel. I am a dentist is Grand Marais, Minnesota, just south of Thunder Bay.
👋 Pat, yep we're neighbors (or were)
It was very wholesome the last bit😀
Retirement honestly seems soo boring. I think it’s better to transition to working a bit less but still have something to do for most of the week
agree
Agree or like at that point you’re working bc you want yo not bc you have to, so it makes everything more enjoyable
Fantastic video
Thanks! 😃
Hey Joel! Really like your videos. They speak of the maturity you have come to attain and really fills a gap in the real world outside the dental school. You just nailed it with the fable of the fisherman. I am also baffled by how you manage to take time out to read and respond to all the comments. Thank you so much. In my situation, I could benefit immensely from your guidance. Would there be a way I could seek mentorship from you and discuss further? Thanks again
ty for the kind words! it means a lot. First - thank you so much for being a fan! It really means a lot. I wish I had time for more one on ones but simply not enough time in the day! I never had a direct mentor, so you can figure it out too :)
I’m 46, been practicing for 23 years now. Worked associate, had my office, now with DSO. I do not want to retire, ever.
Do you have any videos for people who are getting into dentistry late in life? Im going to be 38 when i finish school. I turn 30 tomorrow and i know i will be working until im about 60 or so.
That Reddit quote is actually from the CZcams channel Magnates Media
Thank you, Philosopher dentist
👋
What if I want to practice until I die? And what if I have no real desire to be ultra rich? I think that dentistry is awesome and I can’t Imagine not doing it. When the day comes they’ll have to drag me out of my office
the best attitude :)
I'm 42 and currently a D2 (I made a career change after 15 years as a lawyer). What advice would you give for someone who wants to retire by 85? lol
enjoy the journey and it doesn't have to (always) feel like work. it's a cliche but true.
By the time I graaduate from dental school i will have around 290-330k in debt, How many years do you believe would take to pay this off?
Is your friend who owns 19 practices completely retired from clinical dentistry? Surely he is able to live off the cash flow of the absentee owned practices alone?
Unless there is a massive market correction in regards to dental reimbursements then his goal should be to focus on delegating his practice management tasks so he can reduce his workload and hence in a way retire immediately.
He only does high end work rotating between the practices but he’s still working!
Joel what if you are starting dentistry at 40?
then delay your aged 40 retirement to 54 :)
So, what if I just turned 40 and have only been a dentist for two years? 😂
😘
60 is still a good and early retirement age lol
@@James-zv9hp No thanks. I'm trying to FIRE, accumulate real estate that cash flows and retire by 50. Ambitious, but I'm aiming high
@@James-zv9hp I told myself while in my 20’s I would not work a day passed 60! The younger generations are like not working passed 30 or 40. Good luck with that, I can only imagine the lifestyle.
What’s the point of going into healthcare by paying $300k+ for school, spending 8+ years of education, expelling so much stress and anxiety just to retire at 40? Don’t get me wrong, retiring early is awesome but what’s the point of putting in all that effort to being a dentist just to only spend 8 years in the career by retiring early?
With regards to the easy approach. Even if i work far away and make max 300k. I don't understand how I will make a 5 million investable networth after tax and expenses. If not incorporated the max you can save is like a 100k/yr. And if incorporated then you are talking about working far to save money to invest it in real-estate until it reaches to 5Million investable networth?
the "easy" approach was to try and save $1m, not $5m
As someone who is interested in omfs🤣🤣its not gonna happen
