    I think the Environment Agency is slacking, Floods in Britain are not new but rivers have been allowed to silt up. Rivers need to be made deeper and wider (where possible) to speed up drainage.

    Visited the UK for a month from the 20th May - 27th June, 2012...in Wales for a week...sunny and exceptionally warm for almost the whole time..less than two weeks later it rained torrentially and flooded...about a month later you had the same devastation. Hope you've recovered now and though it's terribly sad...much of the problem is nature's doing its thing...nature is not static...that's how our world evolved. See "elliptical orbit of earth" online to understand cyclical weather patterns.

    I think it's because the ground isn't getting chance to sufficiently dry out before more rain comes. Lack of sun and too much rain over the summer and everywhere is waaay saturated.

    Hopefully the homes in Lymebourne escaped to worst of the water. Very scary. I can't remember it as bad as this. Some might recall when during heavy rain a log got caught under the old weir (which was subsequently raised to stop it happening again) in The Byes back in the sixties which flooded Milford Road, Russell Street and the lower part of the town so they had to use boats to get around.

    The next day you would hardly have known anything had happened! A few piles of twigs, some damaged walls and fences, a few areas of mud but cycling through the Byes was much like any normal day. The last bad flood was 1997 so can't complain!

    Hi
    The Environment Agency is currently planning a four week social media campaign in November designed to get members of the public more flood aware.
    Part of the work we want to do is make a video montage of previous flooding events to highlight how devastating they have been. We've just looked at your clips of Sidmouth and wondered if we might be able to use the footage in our film?
    You can get in touch with us at angliandigital@environment-agency.gov.uk

    • @Rizlogen
      @Rizlogen Před 9 lety +4

      Naha Deem You can kinda blame technology. I love it as much as the next guy. But climate change exacerbates these problems. Then you have the fact that lots of land is tarmac, built on or paved over. Stops infiltration of water into aquifers and the like...UK lacks the vast majority of it's natural forests, which decrease water velocity and allow interception processes to cut groundwater run off....Kinda basic geology... Oh and the idiot farmers who don't understand a thing about natural processes kept screaming for the environment agency to dredge rivers, which also allows a velocity increase due to less surface- water interface. No. I'm not really seeing your point about how this thing shouldn't have happened. It's blood obvious it would.

    I think it was just the amount of water that has fallen at times this year, I would be against dredging rivers except in towns in cases where they need to be to avoid flooding, as that would destroy the valuable habitats they provide and scenic beauty too, while probably not helping to prevent flooding too much. The river in this vid is quite a small fast river that doesn't really silt up anyway.
    I know of one flood in July 1968 that was much bigger than this one even.

    • @richieboiiii
      @richieboiiii Před 7 lety +6

      increased greenhouse emissions cause a blanketing effect in ou atmosphere that traps heat. Increased heat increases the amount of time that ice in the polar regions melts and decreases the period it can refreeze. In turn, less light is reflected back into space from the polar ice caps. This messes with the ocean currents, and de-stabalizes the climate. In most regions this causes (shock horror) increased temperatures which increases water evaporation and thus rainfall. What we are could potentially start to see is temperate climates like the UK start to experience other weather patterns that we previously wouldn't have had. That being said, flooding has always happened, always, especially in the South West so.. theres your answer and to the silly hippie i think if you hadnt of sensationalised oil consumption then people might be less likely to reject your idea
