Torrential flooding in Sidmouth on 7th July 2012. The River Sid burst its banks causing a deluge of water to flood the Byes and other areas. Further info at www.iwpics.com
I think the Environment Agency is slacking, Floods in Britain are not new but rivers have been allowed to silt up. Rivers need to be made deeper and wider (where possible) to speed up drainage.
Brilliant footage - pretty professional, actually. Great sequence of events finishing with the sea. Probably one of the best footages of flooding on youtube. Some after shots for comparrison would be interesting.
Thanks for the great comment :) I actually thought about a scene for scene video of the same locations on a dry and sunny day for comparison. If I get round to it I'll let you know.
Visited the UK for a month from the 20th May - 27th June, 2012...in Wales for a week...sunny and exceptionally warm for almost the whole time..less than two weeks later it rained torrentially and flooded...about a month later you had the same devastation. Hope you've recovered now and though it's terribly sad...much of the problem is nature's doing its thing...nature is not static...that's how our world evolved. See "elliptical orbit of earth" online to understand cyclical weather patterns.
I filmed this flood back in July. The water levels were unprecedented. But only two days ago the same thing happened again and further torrential rain is expected tomorrow. It's crazy and I have no idea why this is happening!
I agree - great job showing the journey right out to sea. Wish I had seen this before I put the "Hose Ban" song on (click muserings below if you want to see it). Looking forward to seeing the sunny day comparison if it happens.
I think it's because the ground isn't getting chance to sufficiently dry out before more rain comes. Lack of sun and too much rain over the summer and everywhere is waaay saturated.
Weather like this during the continuing hose ban in the UK inspired me to do a silly song. I think the ban was already lifted in your area though. You can hear it if you click on muserings below (no advertising involved).
Omg that’s terrifying. I saw on news it’s bad there again at moment. My heart goes out to everyone living there. Such a beautiful place we were there in the june piping hot weather to them this! I pray this rain subsides for you x
Hopefully the homes in Lymebourne escaped to worst of the water. Very scary. I can't remember it as bad as this. Some might recall when during heavy rain a log got caught under the old weir (which was subsequently raised to stop it happening again) in The Byes back in the sixties which flooded Milford Road, Russell Street and the lower part of the town so they had to use boats to get around.
The next day you would hardly have known anything had happened! A few piles of twigs, some damaged walls and fences, a few areas of mud but cycling through the Byes was much like any normal day. The last bad flood was 1997 so can't complain!
I remember this. I would have been 14. I remember it being really bad and being happy I lived at the top of Sidmouth near Waitrose, but looking at this now, his looks like a puddle after what my friend from Texas has sent me.
Holy crap I remember this when I was little before I moved I was so scared because I lived so close to the byes (name of the park that flooded the whole town basically) I lived a few houses up from it but the days after we’re awesome though because I got to swim down a street
Wow! It's so terrible, my geography lesson today was about flooding in the Uk, I found it so interesting. 2012 was such a strange year for the weather, did you know that on Oct 11 2012 2 weeks worth of rainfall fell in 90 minutes? Thank you for this video!
the reason why the UK seems to flood more is because mash lands and the countryside and trees that once was have now been concreted over so theres no where for the water to soakaway and its only direction is down hill
Thats the same direction the properties will go when the water rises lol. When will they realise and start building new housing in potential flood areas up on a 3 or 4 foot plinth to avoid house floods. They won't learn.
@@foresterboy2011 your correct it doesn't help either that the councils and government are building on flood plains too then blaming climate change when peoples property is destroyed.
mother nature at her best. we cannot expect the climate to b the same year in year out, decade after decade AND century after century. of course its going to get spazmodic at time to time, the earth will not and does not sit on the same perfect axis constintly, it will wobble and change our climate. i live in north wales and we seem to get more snow each year now... lifes always got new supprises, thats what makes it interesting i think
And they consistently fail to build flood infrastructure. There is still loads of stuff that was built in the time of Victoria which is literally creaking under the strain. They built things to last but not forever. But that's Modern Britain for you. If it cant make a profit then its not worth having.
Hi The Environment Agency is currently planning a four week social media campaign in November designed to get members of the public more flood aware. Part of the work we want to do is make a video montage of previous flooding events to highlight how devastating they have been. We've just looked at your clips of Sidmouth and wondered if we might be able to use the footage in our film? You can get in touch with us at angliandigital@environment-agency.gov.uk thanks :)
Naha Deem You can kinda blame technology. I love it as much as the next guy. But climate change exacerbates these problems. Then you have the fact that lots of land is tarmac, built on or paved over. Stops infiltration of water into aquifers and the like...UK lacks the vast majority of it's natural forests, which decrease water velocity and allow interception processes to cut groundwater run off....Kinda basic geology... Oh and the idiot farmers who don't understand a thing about natural processes kept screaming for the environment agency to dredge rivers, which also allows a velocity increase due to less surface- water interface. No. I'm not really seeing your point about how this thing shouldn't have happened. It's blood obvious it would.
I think it was just the amount of water that has fallen at times this year, I would be against dredging rivers except in towns in cases where they need to be to avoid flooding, as that would destroy the valuable habitats they provide and scenic beauty too, while probably not helping to prevent flooding too much. The river in this vid is quite a small fast river that doesn't really silt up anyway. I know of one flood in July 1968 that was much bigger than this one even.
take a good look government of our little island.the same government who say we need 50,000 more houses all sending water straight into the rivers.we dont need more houses we need less people.this is not a racist comment it is a fact.this is an island,it cannot grow bigger,it is full.to save it we need to stabalise it.the problem is though as always greed.....big payouts to certain people for allowing the building of horrible little boxes on flood land etc etc
Ariel spraying/geoengineering that they are doing in our skies above our head's, say they haven't started it they but we can all see clearly the plane's laying down grids and lines from horizon to horizon,

the cars that are driving through this deluge are the very reason why the weather is like this in the first place, governments have us addicted to OIL without a damn care for the eco system, yet they tell us to stop smoking in public places which is ridiculous
increased greenhouse emissions cause a blanketing effect in ou atmosphere that traps heat. Increased heat increases the amount of time that ice in the polar regions melts and decreases the period it can refreeze. In turn, less light is reflected back into space from the polar ice caps. This messes with the ocean currents, and de-stabalizes the climate. In most regions this causes (shock horror) increased temperatures which increases water evaporation and thus rainfall. What we are could potentially start to see is temperate climates like the UK start to experience other weather patterns that we previously wouldn't have had. That being said, flooding has always happened, always, especially in the South West so.. theres your answer and to the silly hippie i think if you hadnt of sensationalised oil consumption then people might be less likely to reject your idea

what's going on with the weather? it is the 26th of November and it's barley cold outside. there are still leaves on trees.

Floods look so urbane, English ND polished.
In this day and age, and with all the technology at our disposal, how the hell does this happen to Britain
Three Words, nail on head
But they can take precautions
I don't think technology will stop floods... It's nature, it can't be controlled.
I know it can't stop them, but we can take precautions, a little snow or rain and the whole country ceases to a stand still
