Hi, I don’t go to the school you teach at but these really really help me, I dislike watching Mr Bruff videos as I find it hard to keep focus but watching these makes me feel like I’m in the classroom, my annotations are so much better since I’ve been watching so thank you !

Hi Miss, thank you very much for posting these videos on youtube. I am in year 10 as well and have been watching your videos throughout lockdown. They have been very helpful when our class has been set to read a new poem!!

In "released a song bird from its cage" I almost think of it as the mother recollecting the memory of letting her son out from the house, like a bird being set free into the world. And the ambiguity that we don't know how soon she did that it could also mean she is dazed by the fact her son has gone, as if her life purpose just walked out the door. Both her son (which holds emotional value) and the man she was taking care of (role of women) just walked out the door. She may be constantly recollecting this memory because she simply doesn't know what to do without her son.

Can i just say this is a great video, very much helped! "Released a song bird from its cage" could mean she screamed, but i also thought that it could mean, "She had to let him go, the "cage" could represent her wing, how she held him and protected him and din't want to let him go, but realised that she had to". Maybe the "song" bird, signifies how he has in own voice, and how she can't make decision for him forever. What do you think?

That is a brilliant thought! It also suggests some hope within her. He is the song she created and now she is releasing him. Beautiful

@@mrsjoyes1315 Also i was thinking, "the world overflowing like a treasure chest", could also relate to the son as a child, as children do "treasure hunts" or pretend to be "pirates", this could link how he almost sees it in a child's perspective.

@@mrsjoyes1315 Thanks! Also at the end, when you say that it has a regular stanza structure, did you say it's not regulanted?? What do you mean by that? and also when you said she is NOT A SOLDIER, would it change if she was?

Hey hun! The word I use is regimented as in every line the same with the same punctuation. A regiment is a group of soldiers which is why it links to the idea that although she is part of a military family, so on the outskirts, rather than being in the military

There is a chance that the son is just lost at war and that's why there is so much contrasting vocabulary intertwined (textiles term lol) in the poem.
